As much praise as Messi has gotten at this World Cup, I also believe that the entire Argentina team displayed a passion and drive we haven't seen before. In terms of sheer drive and willpower, I believe Argentina 2022 is the most impressive of all time. Losing to Saudia Arabia and essentially having to play every match as a KO match all the way to that trilling Final and PK shootout.Every one of those players was trying to win it for not only Argentina but also for Messi.I was watching a reporter interviewing Messi prior to the World Cup and he choked up halfway couldn't even finish because he got so emotional. Another reporter went off script and told Messi all of Argentina loves him and regardless if he wins the Cup or not everyone has him in their hearts. There was no way Argentina was ever going to not win the World Cup, listening to that Telemundo announcer from Argentina announce the Montiel cup winning penalty and it's basically an emotion every player in the squad carried with them from day 1. Still feel surreal

This is false, because you don't have to be a Messi fan to know that Messi was always the better player. Like it's so obvious. You make the mistake of thinking it's Messi fans vs Ronaldo fans when it's really Ronaldo fans vs lots of Neutrals who are just fed up with the fact that Ronaldo fans can't see the obvious.
How is it false. Go look at the threads, Reddit, twitter back then. It was the exact same, except the other way around.

The goat welcomed back with a guard of honor

I wonder how much hunger he will still have.

I hope he has a proper go at it. He was sensational at the world cup. And is far from retirement quality. I hope he doesn't go to the MLS. Not for the next few years anyway.

There's also Ronaldo's UCL records to break. And a Copa America in 2024.

I keep intermittently seeing comments saying that a “Last Dance” like documentary was made around Messi during the World Cup. I think Ferdinand made a comment on it on live tv about it because he “saw cameras following him around”.

Any actual substance in this? I can’t find it anywhere online.

The dutch players didn't protest because (and as Bruno pointed out) by then it was clear Argentina were going to get as many penalties as it takes to see them through. I suppose you think the one they got against Poland was also a "legit penalty"?
Of course they didn't. What would be the point? It was already clear.

He will be 38/39 around then. Although Modric was 37 at this world cup and was sensational.

He wouldn't have to carry the team either. And the pressure will mostly be off.
Not sure you can cap off a world cup career in a better way than he did:

Most goal contributions in world cup history
Most KO goal contributions in world cup history
Tied Most assists all time
Most Key passes in world cup history
Most MOTM awards in world cup history
Only player to score in all KO stages
Only player to get MOTM in all rounds
Only player with 2 World Cup golden balls

He turned back the clock and turned in his Jordan last dance moment in this tournament. But there's no beating father time. He'll be a shadow of himself next world cup.

I don't see the point of participating unless he's wants to keep adding to his world cup cumulative stats.

I dont think its a good idea. As fantastic as he was at the WC his legs are getting evidently heavier and as with any footballer as he continues it'll start becoming more of a hindrance. This win and then closing out the season with one more CL attempt is the perfect end to a career in the major leagues / Europe. But he will know himself best.

Nah. He should end it here for world cups.

Messi already said this would be his last WC.

3 and half years is a long time away, but his game is one that I think can be suited to a longer career.

However he simply can't be the focal point of the team anymore. It would be asking for too much.

But having him in the team (perhaps even sometimes on the bench) could work.

I definitely think he will play at the next Copa America though in 2024.

He was so so good at this world cup. Some of the things he did were just outrageous (the assist for goal against the Dutch for example)

I wonder how he would do as playmaker from midfield. He's got one of the best brains in football. And that can be very useful.

He wont be in the next WC. In 2 years time, he will be somewhere outside Europe finishing off his career. Legs will be gone in 3 and a half years.

He already does playmaking from midfield dropping into it from an advanced position. Starting him in a deep midfield position wouldn’t work as he stands around too much, he’d have to run too much off the ball.

I think this guy is the greatest of the last 30 years by such a distance (not getting into the Maradona/Pele debates) that we will never see anything like him again. We'll see someone score as many goals, maybe even win more trophies, but no one will score as many goals while passing as beautifully and consistently and dribbling so amazingly as Messi ever again I think. No one will give us the moments this guy has given us. It's the greatest highlights reel of all time by such a margin when you go on youtube and watch back over this guy's career. I'll cry when he retires.

I think people talking about Messi going on untill he's almost 40 hasnt realized that he's already stated he wants to retire on top not just when he can do a job somewhere for someone. Still PSG might keep making him offers he cant refuse.

There's Ronaldo's UCL record to break.

And also could join the 5 time winners list. So I can see him staying at PSG yet.

Plus he's playing much better than he was 2 years ago. Definitely found a different level.

What about playing him in a 3 men midfield with runners around him?

Id be interested to see how much Modric was moving at this world cup (I don't know the stats)

Too much work to do in midfield. You need legs in the modern pressing game.

I don't mind him giving PSG and the CL a few more goes but I hope he doesn't for the CL record. It isn't that meaningful imo unless you're starring and with a chance to win the team trophy.

Modric has a proper midfielders engine. Totally different situation

I definitely wont cry but I agree with the rest of your post. The only way someone betters him is if we get a Ronaldo type physical specimen with Messis skillset.

I think at this point it is questionable if classic athleticism is even that much of an advantage in football. Maradona, Pelé and Messi are widely regarded as the three best footballers in history and they were 1.65 m (5'5), 1.69 m (5'6) and 1.73 m (5'6) tall. Low center of gravity might be more important than being strong.

Yeah you got the feeling that all the players would willingly die on the pitch for Messi. From old timers like Otamendi to the young ones like Enzo.

Leadership is something Messi has been (wrongly) criticized for in the past but his demonstration of that quality for this Argentina squad has been nothing but excellent.

Hard not to contrast with the cloud Ronaldo brought over the entire Portugal team.

I think there’s a lot of affection for Messi from his teammates, in addition to the respect. Whereas with Ronaldo I suspect there was a lot a respect but not much in the way of affection.
