I don't think you can trust him with recruitment. I think it's the case with a lot of top modern coaches.

I'd say Antony was the litmus test of his recruitment (his £80m marquee signing) and it's a terrible one, especially considering he coached the guy for years.

We need a head of recruitment, and he just needs to work with the players he's given. He's quite good at that - he's improved AWB, and generally speaking the players already at the club have benefited from his coaching.
I would hope we don't in the summer.

Antony is looking like a colossal mistake.

I believe in him totally.. the board just failed him at the beginning of the season….
We need a true world class striker
A real playmaker because bruno is nothing but average player with good moments every couple of games & quality full backs
Problem was we still had Ronaldo and his wages thanks to Ed Woodward. No club in Europe was willing to take his ego and wages on, hence where he ended up.

An absolute freak result. It sucks, but seeing folks in here now question Ten Hag confirms (as if it was needed) we have such an awful fickle fanbase who turn on you at the drop of a hat.

I hate that about this club.

Don't necessarily have to be fickle.

There have to be certain standards at the club. You can't be losing 7-0 to Liverpool and just brush it aside.

I still don't understand why he decided to not attack Trent with Rashford. He is the manager and i as a fan know shit but imo, he fecked up with that decision. 3 of 4 our attackers started the game out of position.

Absolutely. People have zero patience and are just reactive. This is what happens in social media era. One bad game, casemiro is shit, ETH is just slightly better than Ole, Bruno is shit and can never help us win the title, Martinez is not that good, Shaw is regressive, Rashford is hype etc etc etc
Yeah we weren't seeing these comments last week.

It was obviously a horrendous day yesterday but it hasn't changed my opinion on this team and manager. It was a freak result. I'm still confident we can win another trophy and honestly wouldn't be surprised if we win both.

Nobody is calling for his head but fans have a right to be miffed about that result. It's an absolute shocker.

We also conceded 6 at City and 4 at Brentford too so it's not an isolated incident. We don't set up away from home very well in my eyes. We are too easy to play against.

At home we've been very good though. That's a huge huge plus.

Coaches don’t do recruitment anymore at well run clubs. We have a shocking structure so went with ETHs picks. Given that situation I’m happy we got the players in that we did and our improvement is clear. But yeah Antony is not looking a good buy right now.

The only explanation is that he didn't want to tire out Rashford tracking back when Trent bombed forward.

But still, it'd also make Trent leery of bombing forward and it likely leads to more space for Rashford to run in behind.

We need a center forward. Rashford is still at his best operating from the left.

To all those whinging about ETH ‘getting everything wrong’ go back to half-time and tell us what your thoughts were.

We made one mistake that led to their goal, but had until then effectively weathered the storm and had the better of the chances.

I for one felt supremely confident that we could get back in the second half and win.

Nobody could predict that capitulation.

But all this collapse are too frequent.

I believe Elite managers / big club doesn't collapse this frequent.

You see all those collapses last season, at match day 25

we had 43 points, today we have 49 points. Just 6 point difference.

Goal difference was 8. Today 6.

We've conceded more goals now than last season at game 25.

Even Moyes mighty Westham have conceded less goals than us this season. Even Fulham, Brenford, Crystal Palace

We can bury our heads because of carabao cup but no significant changed has occurred, just that Ten Hag demands more than Ole.

we still play counter, even Newcastle had over 60% possession in the final.

remember all the chances Westham had in the previous game, remember Leicester chances, good teams would have blown us away.

Anfield we got such a team and boy we were blown away completely.

Ten Hag needs to do a drastic change or else this players will throw him under the bus. You saw how they were unbothered at Anfield, seems they cam drop such stinkers again because they know nothing will happen.
They’ll only be able to with fans like you don’t stick up for a manager for a minute.

6 point difference by pro rats is a 10 point difference over 38 games. Is that not important? Or a trophy?

I hope you're right tbh. I highly doubt we'll win another cup. Top 4 will be obtained at least
We don't seem to lose to cannon fodder lately, but City will be a tough out in the FA Cup.

It's still too early for the Europa League.

Have to agree. I think he could have even played Garnacho or Sancho on the LW too with Rashford up top. While Bruno tends to track back he's not a threat in behind and he's not threatening in one vs one situations, even against Trent. An actual winger could have given him something to worry about.

Yes I didn’t understand that either. Trent is their weak link when they don’t have the ball. Attack him with Rashford or Garnacho. Bruno did nothing on the left. And just stick Antony on Robertson, Antony is good to work and help out in defence, now Robertson got way too much room to play and did really well. And then let Weghorst press the centre backs instead of shadowing Fabinho all the time. Fernandes or even Sabitzer or Fred could shadow Fabinho as well in that roll. I think Ten Hag did what Guardiola did so often in big games, overthink his tactics too much and play players in unusual roles. Just play the normal game we can.

The players and manager need to make some kind of formal statement of apology tomorrow, to the fans. It would be the right thing to do.
The best apology is good performances in next few games.

Those apologies that players make are nonsense.

Beat Betis by 2 or 3 goals. That's an apology.

I'm putting down to fat

I think Bruno was to move in to the half space and Rashford had license to attack any areas he found space

I'd predicted there would be a hangover effect coming. I didn't expect it to be that bad of course but I still think it's mainly the factor of having so many big games back to back to back and it just caught up to the players, silly mistakes and then lost their heads.

Of course it's a disastrous result but we can't let it be the story of the season, we've made some good progress this season. Won a trophy, beat Barca over 2 legs and deservedly so. Let's trust Ten Hag to pick up the lads and get back in gear for a Europa League run.

Carabao + deep runs in FA cup and Europa (hopefully picking one up) and top 4 would be a very good season after last year.
I broadly, agree with this. But, but.. that scoerline is both a bit of a freak result, but also an embarrassment. That second half was like watching a pub team, we were like an animal stuck in some headlights.. we just lost ourselves.

Two observations, or thoughts really: the first is, I actually think this will help our season, it's a wake up call, severe, ruthless, iconic, and unforgiving. The players have no choice but to reflect and respond. True Manchester United players and staff will do so. Second thing is, the last few weeks we have been showing signs (Leicester, West Ham, the Cup Final.. all the opposition had v v good chances..), and it's all just reiterated what we all know, but may have forgot.. we need a good few top, top, players to really get to that next level.

ETH, and the players have worked wonders over the last few months. But we need assess, consolidate our position in the Premiership, and in the summer, build.

And don't we miss Eriksen, right? Hope he can get back sooner rather than later... we need him.

The game plan first half worked perfectly - we rode out their intial blitz in the first 15-20 minutes, game settled down and we created 2-3 chances that you just cannot miss in big games like this. Even Souness at half time I think was actually very relieved that Liverpool had scored at a time when we were on top and looking comfortable.

With hindsight I think if he'd taken Dalot and Fred off for AWB and Sabitzer, and Weghorst for Garnacho, things could have been very different.

Yeah, i still don't quite understand what happened and how these players who've been fighting tooth and nail for one another, the coach and the fans all season just "gave up" in that manner.

Maybe fatigue set in, heads dropped....i think something like at least 3-4 of their goals were gifted to them through mistakes of our own.

Just lost for words, really. Difficult to accept that hammering.

Overall, I think we ended up playing right into their hands by allowing them to counter us, and EtH made a good point - a few unprofessional/unacceptable performances out there, walking back when we lost the ball.

With the way our players lost their heads, we still would have lost heavy. I don't think tactics was the reason we lost 7-0. The players gave up mentally after 3 down and didn't know what to do.

Manager got it right

First half we was good and should have been ahead nevermind 1-0 down

Second half the players completely lost their heads and conceded 6 goals in 40 minutes. Bruno, Shaw, Anthony etc should be ashamed

Christ. Some embarrassing post on here. So short sighted and a severe lack of ability to see the bigger picture.

It's like the last few months never happened.

The fact how annoyed we all are about the result is testament to the job he has done, or even some how managed to do with some of these players. This time last season we wouldn't have been surprised.

Agree the run of games has been tough ones , Barca home and away, cup final, and West ham ,down then digging deep to come back all those games had to keep going to the Well sometimes it's dry, and yesterday it ran dry .
EtH hasn't said its fatigue he doesn't want to give the players an excuse to lose the next game. Its plain to see no legs yesterday in 2nd half.

I'm not so sure. Our main team has Bruno working hard in midfield this season, he's pushed out wide left away to Liverpool and couldn't handle it out there, he lost it. Weghorst has been a good foil for Rashford but because of a few good times dropping back he's actually selected in midfield away to Liverpool. How we suddenly retreat to this new formation away to Pool is poor from the manager. The few times Bruno has been moved to wide right we've come under heavy pressure and conceded against Palace and Arsenal.

Case was limping around early on and our midfield is Fred and Weghorst. Dalot has been poor since coming back, AWB was the man to play in form.

We came under heavy pressure from the off, we survived with Liverpool players wildly blasting wide and over hitting passes in our box, this all turned to goals in the second half. Our chances were tame but on target. Rashford was needed out wide to face TAA, Bruno was needed to help out and where he's been good and hard working all season. The collapse was there once Liverpool got some composure at half time. The Gakpo goal in the first half was a sign of what to do, Klopp had them exploit all our setup and player problems.

I feel we neutered ourselves across the pitch trying new things in such a tough fixture, not helping out a limping Case (we're horrid without him) and playing some out of form.

Should be utterly outraged by this result no matter who is in charge. Our worst defeat in memory.

Everything United do is big news, EtH has been great for the club but one bad day and the knives are out.

Laughable from the fans and media, but lucky for the team there is only 3 days before they can put it right.

Yep. But United are stupid and never learn. All talk and then we do the same mistakes over and over again.
It's my big fear: we finally have an excellent coach, one proven to be able to get a bunch of players to play progressive, enjoyable football. One who can actually make a team better than the sum of its parts.

But we're probably going to hamstring him by, ironically, giving him full control over recruitment. Which shouldn't be his job.

That’s bollocks, we could have been on a ten win losing streak or ten points clear at the top and we’d still be in shock/mad/dissapointed at this result.

he’s done a good job so far yes and I’m happy with him here disclaimer again

Klopp's Pool had a few cricket scores too. That's what happens when you're not perfect at playing out the back and pressing.

Some exceptional finishing / luck / whatever you want to call it doesn't help.

If I blame him for anything it's that he thought he could go to Anfield and attack Pool instead of settling for a counter attacking game.
That's the point am trying to make

Any manager can get it wrong sometimes but his inability to reign in the game yesterday was shocking

Everyone knows the moment a game is lost the next job is to ensure its not a hammering, there's no point saying after the game that the players were unprofessional

Do something about it there an then, Bruno should have been hooked, Case looked injured early first half, surely you take him off as we have more games to play in the season

Erik Seven Haag has to go now. It is looking more and more like Ole's reign, purple patches dont last forever. At least Ole could handle the big games and not make us lose by such huge margins against our rivals.

That makes no sense whatsoever. Regardless of how bad our form is and how great theirs may be, getting battered like at Old Trafford last season was still painful.

As we all said before the game, form goes out the window in these matches and only the result matters.

Yep. My feeling so far is that ten Hag is an excellent coach (a bit like Van Gaal-lite but not a decade past it), needs a lot to learn about tactics, but is not necessarily great at new signings. And the last part is concerning when it comes to United because the coach does the signings. In normal clubs, that would not have been his part of the job at all.
