The problem with Rashford will always be that he plays in 'moments'.

His champions will say his statistics are good, and at times they are (at times they have also not been)

His detractors will say his all-round contribution is basically nil when/if he isn't scoring or assisting and that he doesnt work hard enough.

I would like to see what would happen if we had some genuine competition for him. He's pretty much been a guaranteed starter since he was 18 due to a pitiful lack of options in forward positions. Maybe some real tough competition for places and a few weeks on the bench would add fire to his game? We saw what happened at Wolves when he came off the bench, that's the Rashford I want to see. Powerful, direct, aggressive and hungry. I don't want to see the whiny, whingy, lazy, showboater Rashford.
I think he needs to limit what he does. Tight, specific, focused role. For me it all goes wrong when he tries to play like he's much better than he is. Rashy of the Rovers. Whilst confidence in your own ability is good, at some point you need to be told to stop because whilst you might think you're nearly as good as Ronaldo because someone on the Caf cited a "at the same age" stat that's flattering in the comparison, you're not actually that good.

Limiting his role to focus the player on where he can contribute most is what I think we saw earlier in the season. And it worked. More recently though I think we've seen the return of the unfocused journeyman on the pitch and maybe that's on the manager but some of it is probably on Rashford too

I'm starting to feel like there's some special rules when it comes to criticizing Rashford on this forum.
Also belittling me with sticking to gifs instead of having my say? Some of you have a special case of delusion where you overate certain players/win runs and then shit on users who are pessimistic about it.
He's not going to bring us any glory. He's a patchy player always was, always will be.
Yes because he has played with patches of other players of not a single quality.

Acting like these elite players would be playing a whole world class season with players like Mctominay, Fred, Fellaini, Maguire, De Gea, Sancho, Martial, Elanga, and then this season fecking Weghorst, Antony.

I can understand people saying Rashford may never be a 20 goal season player but he has been a 20 g&a player in 3 of his seasons so even if he is patchy, that patch is way too useful and consistent just to belittle him over it when we have absolutely no one else supporting him.

@zaafi

Martinelli is doing 1 less goal than Rashford’s season & this is Martinelli’s first double figure goals season whilst Rashford’s had fecking 4. Never mind the rest of the cup goals.

You couldn’t name 3 PL better players & just fantasies over players who are less patchy in shit leagues.

fecking Martinelli

Oh wait I remember these rules

1) point out other players are equally as poor or worse

2) question why anyone would criticise Rashford, insinuate that by doing so they may not be a real fan

3) use stats to prove that whilst we might think he's playing poorly he's actually better than Ronaldo on the basis of the number of assists against top four opposition in midweek games up to and including the age of 23

4) see 1) but focused specifically on how shit Martial is.

5) ask who you'd replace him with and use a laughing emoji regardless of who they name

6) deny that you have a problem with anyone pointing out Rashford isn't playing well

Martinelli is 21 ffs. He has created 58 chanced as opposed to Rashford's 26 while having the same amount of assists and only one less goal. Don't embarrass yourself, thinking Martinelli is some garbage player :houllier:

Imagine not thinking Rashford is a patchy player. Of course he is. Doesn’t mean he’s shite or anything he just isn’t capable yet or ever of being a consistent goal scorer.

Similary the rules of shitting on Rashford are:

1) whenever he has a bad game of a few claim we wont win anything with him and he should be replaced

2) he can dribble past players 5 times (and he's been better at that this season) but one unsuccesful dribble and its - he cant dribble to save his life

3) Scores 29 goals in all competitions - yeah, yeah but he misses a lot of chances. Oh and those goals came from January to February (or something like that)

4) passes to a teammate - yeah but he doesnt do it enough - he's still selfish

Its funny cause you quoted a poster who has a clear agenda from day one against Rashford. Or all United players and United as a club.

Haven't watched Martinelli a lot this season, have you? Not as flashy as Marcus, but boy is he creative and effective. One could easily argue he has had the better season this year.

A patchy player who can produce figures like he did this season on a regular will obviously be an asset to any team. Dunno about delusions but some of you are definitely clueless about the reality of creating a squad of good players who can all play their part in a successful team. I put it down to way too much time on football Twitter bickering about Messi, Ronaldo, Mbappe and Haaland.

He probably has. Although it helps that he’s been playing for a better team, with a stronger midfield and where the burden of scoring and creating has been shared equally among all their attacking players. What numbers do you think Rashford might have put up playing on the left side of Arsenal’s attack all season?

That could go both ways really. If no big players around, you pass to the big players i.e Rashford in our team, which makes him be on the end of more. Like when Ronaldo was our star-man back in the day. On the other hand Arsenal just create more, but it's spread out. Martinelli isn't the go-to-player when passing, Saka or Jesus probably are.

It's not like Rashford crosses a lot, maybe because there's not a great attacker to pass to, so that could speak in favour of Rashford, but you could argue for both really. That Martinelli is just as equal or a better passer/crosser.

This has been exactly my point for years. Rashford is at his best when he simplifies his game to the real basics. He's a good finisher, he can beat a player one vs one IF there's space to attack and he is very quick. When he looks to get on the shoulder and in-behind, he is very dangerous (see the goal vs Spurs recently)

The problems begin when he starts believing his own hype. His link-up play is actually quite poor. He's not very good at holding the ball and his passing and first-touch are very erratic. Therefore, as you say, when he plays further from goal and gets involved in attacks earlier, he tends to be a hindrance rather than a help.

He has had 1 less goal than Rashford’s in the PL & has only created 1 extra in any other competition whilst not scoring a single other goal in any other competition.

Not a single other one.

Not the FA CUP, Not the Europa, Not the Carabao Cup

Rashford has 17 g&a in other competitions outside the PL.

17 bloody more.

Don’t embarrass yourself mate.
He has been outperformed in every single competition.

Every single one.

And Arsenal are also at the finished article of their project stage - having a near new player in every position except Xhaka- whilst ten Hag and Rashford’s just starting theirs.

Just bullshit.

You couldn’t name 3 players better than him in this league & the only one you did could be argued as just having a break out season or a purple patch himself.

And he got absolutely slapped in all other competitions.

Martinelli in the Champions League would be interesting indeed.

Why is it got to do with his hype in his head?

You know shit all about his personality.

He has been off form ever since he got a knock and got sent off the field.

It’s no coincidence ever since then he hasn’t been playing good & he still scored for us 2 games or so back whilst playing shit.

It’s the same shit last season - he was playing shit whilst he was holding his back - some serial complainers didn’t believe it whilst some did.

Glad he shut you lot off for so long but now everyone is back on him again - why - as soon as he gets injured and plays off form.

Acting like when he was scoring for 4 months in a row that he had the personality of an angel and then suddenly he started turning in to the ego of Ronaldo.

Why do you always end your posts with a massive laughter? Genuinely curious.

If you keep seeing it, maybe there's some truth in it, no? The others do nothing, but somehow Antony always has more key passes than Rashford every single game. Same with Sancho. Sancho also has 5 goals and 2 assists in half of Rashford's minutes played, so if he were to play as much and follow his current stats, he'd have 10 goals and 4 assists, which really isn't that far off from Rashford's 16 goals and 5 assists.

When Rashford plays like this, he offers absolutely nothing. Runs into defenders, hoping somehow he gets through with the ball. He's not a very intelligent player, despite being a good goal scorer. Very easily replaceable.
his minutes are reduced due to his lack of impact. sub players usually have distorted stats

We know that Rashford is capable of linking up with good players when they’re playing well because him and Martial had that hot streak as a partnership a season or two ago. Before Martial began his recent decline. Plus he links up well when him and Shaw are on the left together (which hasn’t happened as much as usual this season, for various different reasons)

It just seems obvious to me that the key to getting more out of Rashford as a team player is to surround him with better players. Like all the attacking players on our team a quality number nine will kick his all round game up a notch. And, unlike most attacking players on our team, he’s already one of the most productive attacking players in the league. So is really not a problem that needs fixing, not matter what some of the weirdos in this thread seem to think.

Yeah I dont see any problem with how Rashford has performed this season neither (overall).

It is also very strange to have two wingers in Antony and Rashford who mostly just shoots. They have no one to aim for in the box and rarely a good link-up striker. Kane/Osimhen fits the bill, but I dont see Napoli selling. Im also a bit surprised that Antony doesnt have much speed, so it’d elevate his game quite a lot to at least have a good striker to aim for in the box or one that can play him in angles/make runs so he can get his great shot in.

Wow I didn’t realise he’s about to get 30 goals, imagine we get a prolific striker also and Antony starts scoring.

He must be tired it’s been a very long season, the whole team looks lacking of energy. We need one final push though to secure champions league football, it’s getting a bit nerve wracking.

If we focus on true first team players then I actually think we may need 3 new players to compete next season, two bonafide first team forwards and one central midfielder.

Rashford, Antony, Garnacho, New Striker, Sancho replacement.

Casemiro, Ericksen, Bruno, New Central Midfielder, Fred.

Aren’t all forwards patchy players? I mean those that develop week in week out consistency are those who are generally labelled best of the best

Half the idiots here would have been on RAWK if they were Liverpool fans earlier on this season lamenting Salah being re-signed on a new contract. Every player goes through hot and cold periods. Salah has only just caught up with Rashford, so Rashford’s only crime is having his form period before Salah had his. Mental.

Why are you acting so defensive to a relatively balanced post?

Let's just address a few of the points in your post. You say that he has been 'off form ever since he got a knock'. You then say 'he was playing shit whilst he was holding his back'. So if I have that right, you acknowledge that he has been poor at times this season and poor last season....but your explanation for this is that he was injured?

You talk about 'shutting people up'. Fantastic. That is exactly what I want him to do. I have acknowledged that, on balance, he has been our best wide-forward/attacker this season. I also mentioned in another post that the Rashford we saw between the World Cup and about March was exactly the Rashford I want to see. Focused, determined, fighting for loose balls, chasing lost causes, sprinting, running in behind. However, since then, he has reverted to the sort of form/performances we saw early in the season and for most of the last 18-months.

You say we know 'shit all' about his personality, but we can infer certain things about his personality from his body language and his general attitude on the pitch. For me, he looks like someone who treads a fine line between having no confidence at all and being a little bit TOO confident. What I will say, in his defence, is that he hasn't really been well-coached throughout his professional career. I feel had a manager like ETH got hold of him earlier, then he'd be a much more effective, well-rounded player. It might be that his desire to get over-involved and over-complicate his game is not arrogance at all, but is simply the result of bad habits creeping in due to ineffective coaching and advice over the last few seasons.

And, again....it's NOT about attacking Rashford personally. I'm sure he's a nice bloke and he's a very useful footballer. However, I don't base my opinions solely on goals/assists and what I like to see is fight, desire, consistency, aggression, determination....and I dont see it enough from him.

Those are my opinions. If you don't agree, then fine....but it seems strange that you got so angry about quite a gentle post when there's no shortage of what basically boils down to outright abuse and character assassinations all over this forum

The thing is that the team needs him to improve, at least somewhat, on these "other" stuff. Likewise, he also needs to do add a bit more nuance and variety to his "basics", if he wants to become the player who will do nothing in the 2/3 of the build-up and offer next to nothing in the defensive aspect of the game (from collecting second balls to tracking back), too. Given that there have been mitigating factors as well as favourable ones for him this season, an xG13.6 in 2741 minutes (PL), while good, leaves a lot to be desired, considering the type of player he/the club seem to think he should become.

Team plays poorly for a couple of games at the end of a long season and people pile into the thread of the guy with 40 GA this season to say how he’s a streaky player and not as good as a similar style player with 20 GA. Classic redcafe.

Look back at Shaw since Jose quit the club. He has had up and down seasons with Ole, been praised to the skies when he performed but him, Rashford, Lindeloff, Maguire, AWB Fred, Mctominay are the mainstays of the team when we have been hammered regularly since 2021. When we are in tough positions, these kind of players do not have to will to step up and do something about changing the course of the game.

I find Shaw to be a very classy player who has a great first touch and can pass, attack, defend has everything to be world class but doesn't perform like one at the highest level for United. He does that only when we are as a team in a good nick. Never when the chips are down. Players like him and Rashford are fair-weather players. Step up when the pressure is less.
Sorry but this is just revisionism in order to fit an often regurgitated narrative. Apart from a couple of periods Shaw has been excellent, certainly one of our best and most consistent players, and world class for several stretches. His head can drop for parts of a season, that's true, and one of his issues, but your assessment is very undeserved.

Good post.

Rashford is having a great season but we can’t pretend that there haven’t been longish spells in this great season where he’s played in exactly the same way as he played in previous seasons which were not great seasons.

He’s still ‘only’ 25 years old so at an age where he should be starting to become more consistent than we’ve seen over the last few years. Having a red hot couple of months, mid season, is potentially a sign that this sort of consistency is on the way. Time will tell. Meanwhile there’s nothing wrong with commenting on the obvious flaws in his all round game. Flaws which he needs to iron out to take his game to the next level.

If we had another forward as productive as Rashford we probably win the league or at least come close. This is the first time since his hot form that he has gone 3 games without a goal contribution

Therefore, as you say, when he plays further from goal and gets involved in attacks earlier, he tends to be a hindrance rather than a help.
Not sure what you describe is him believing his own hype. Rather it could be the team is dysfunctional and unable to create chances for him so he feels he has to help create as well as score

It could be, or, as I have said subsequently, it could be down to ineffective coaching. We don't know for sure, I accept that 100%.

All I know is that there's one excellent version of Rashford, who works very hard, who fights, who shows strength, guts and character and there is one slightly whiney, dejected, sad looking Rashford who jogs about, doesn't run in behind and drops too deep.

I don't know what the reason for that is. Obviously we all want to see the fired-up, motivated, determined Rashford every week, hopefully ETH can crack the code.

He's always been that sort of player. He averages an assist around every 7 games in the PL. Percentage wise very similar to Martial who most agree is a very hit and miss player. Their goal ratio is very similar as well with Martial at 0.31% and Rashford at 0.32%.

“He has a problem, an injury on his leg, so he is a big question mark for tomorrow,” said Ten Hag. “But we are happy Rapha Varane is back.

“[Rashford] is doubtful, more than doubtful. So [there is] a big question mark.”

Jeez, this limp towards top 4 gets tougher and tougher. The obvious advantage is, were at home. So we badly need to try and keep a clean sheet and look to get some 1-0s it seems.I want to say I hope others step up but its more prayer hope than actual belief hope.
