When did Lingard ever get 11 goals and 16 assists in a season? In his best season he wasn’t even close to that.
Don't know about assists, but he scored 13 in 2017/18 and 9 in a mere 16 games at West Ham.

Mount has only scored more than 13 once. For Vitesse in 2017/18.

Some people in this thread are very odd or living in 00's, in a world where Georgino Rutter costs almost 40 mill and Mason Mount isn't worth more strange behaviours imo
lets pick another random signing out the air, how about Odegaard 30m

Mason Mount is a really good player, and certainly much better than Lingard whatever the reason that comparison was made. I do, however, wonder where we are going to play him, because his position isn't one we really need. For the price we are getting him for it really should be to improve our first 11.

This would be proper shit signing, guys lets call a spade a spade, its the same player when he started for England, 90% fans here and everywhere else used to criticize his selection and even during the matches, England only used to play well once he was taken off.

Plus our biggest problem aside from goal scoring was controlling the matches and that was the biggest reason for our poor away form this season. Mount is not creative, nor has the ability to control matches, he is similar to Bruno and is a moments player with a good shot in him.

We have seen with Arsenal they have had the perfect blend of Holding player in Partey, box to box in Xhaka and amazing number 10 in Odegaard. We need to replicate the same and get somebody who can control the game like De Jong or Modric etc. We needed to upgrade on Eriksen not downgrade on him, the only thing Mount has on Eriksen is workrate, but Fred can give us the same so why bother spending 50 to 60M on him.

It will just make us even more frustrating to watch with Rashford, Bruno, Mount and Casemiro all giving the ball away for fun and it will not help our away form one bit. Signings like this are the reason why we are soo far behind the top teams, look at City targeting the correct player in Kovacic, despite having Rodri and Phillips already, he is in the mould of what we need instead of Mount.

I think we'll end up paying between 55-65 mil for him.
I had a figure of £62m in my head. I was initially thinking £45m. That was when I thought he only had one year on his contract but it’s two, isn’t it? Good players cost such a lot these days.

Not really posted on this thread as doesn't really excite me and I certainly wouldn't have batted an eyelid if he was to go to Liverpool before this news broke that we are his preferred option. However, he'll get my backing if he doesn sign. Would be brilliant if he proves me and everyone else that don't want him wrong.

This is my point. They’re in identical contract/FFP situations.

€80m for Mount guarantees Kane is worth €120m.

Mount should be going for €50-60m max. Kane should not be going for €100m.

We run the risk of setting an artificial market that only we are competing in.
With all due respect, you can't really say how much they ''should'' be going for. It's about how much their current clubs value them at and whether the club who wants to buy them agrees with the valuation.

I also disagree with the last bit. There's a lot of players who have gone to other clubs that one would say was overpriced. If you are desperate for a player, overpaying is normally what tends to happen.

That said,, we've always been pretty awful when it comes to signing and selling players.

Yes and no. He can play as a 6, 8 or 10 and has the tactical discipline to play wide too.

I don’t think he displaces Casemiro at 6 or 8, or Bruno at 10. But he could play as a 6 against the weakest teams, an 8 against many, and a 10 against most. He’s so versatile. Klopp, Arteta and Tuchel want him for good reasons.

I think he’s valuable even if he’s only a stand in for other players, only playing 25 matches across the year. He’s also ridiculously consistent. The days of Fred and McTominay being 6/10 for 7 matches and undroppable for 2 or 3 matches has got to stop.

EtH appears to pride predictable consistency above the spectacular. I’m good with that.

Mac Allister is suddenly elite and we’re missing out on him and Mason Mount is Joe Average. ETH and Klopp who both want him, don’t know shit. This thread is downright hilarious

His content is crap and ONLY focuses on numbers. He thinks of himself as a technical scout but I guarantee you he is laughed at by people in those circles.
You do know how numbers and moneyball is how Liverpool went from zeroes to heroes right?

Could you logically explain your problem with using numbers?
And he always talks about work rate too.

By the way with new potential signings he does “the worry with” and “the case for”, he does both sides.

And like many said, jury is still out on Antony, I can't believe many already painted him as failure, the lack of patience these days in a fan is mind blowing.

And no one is saying he is infallible, stop going from one extreme to another, having a little bit of faith in new manager doesn't mean you think he is perfect and doesn't make mistakes.
Writing Antony off already. Jeez.
Where did I write him off ? Jeez...
Wout was an emergency loan and did some sort of job. Jury still out on Antony but he’s done a very good job of getting the ball up the pitch and retaining possession, needs to show more but he’s an important player for us.

But yeah, EtH is very far from perfect, that’s fair comment.
Thank you. At least someone didn't jump the gun

Both players can negotiate with a new club in January. That does determine ‘should’.

Few clubs overpay for players. We are terrible for it.

I can't "logically" give you an answer to the question of what my problem with using numbers is, because I never said that. My problem is with people who ONLY use numbers (you know, the thing that I said).

Liverpool hit big by using both numbers AND actual traditional scouting methods which is the only logical way to do things and indeed what all top clubs do to varying degrees of success.

In this example Howson doesn't understand enough about ten Hag's last Ajax set-up, nor am I convinced he has watched that much of Mason Mount to make an informed decision either way, be it positive or negative. If only because he has so many other ventures taking up his time and how prolific he is with the video output and everything that goes into that, it simply isn't possible to have watched the games through, coded them effectively and then watched the footage back with a team of people to develop any meaningful insight.

Well. I guess Ten Haag think we need to replace one expensive flop with another one. Van De Beek out, this guy in. Why not get the flops out of the way first, then we can invest in youngsters and exiting players we actually need later.

This seems incredibly underwhelming and outright weird. I don't believe it.

The thing about Mount, as a few other people have said, is that he mostly plays like a narrow, relatively deeper LW. That might be exactly what he gets asked to do or it might be that he does that no matter what you ask him to do.

I’ve never seen him play as a no6 and can’t really imagine it but I don’t say he can’t do it. It seems weird to even consider it.

I’d like to think he can play CM, no8, but from what I’ve seen he doesn’t immediately look like an 8 in a 4231.

No10 is probably closest to what he has been doing and maybe it is that simple - he is competition for Bruno. But I hope not, I’d like him developed as a proper CM.

There's not really an 8 in a 4-2-3-1 but agreed that he's an awkward fit there. I think it's pretty clear you will be playing a 4-3-3 next year - and having another 8 able to move up and down the pitch vertically allows you to further mitigate AWB's limitations in possession. Having a mobile 8 on the left also reduces the amount of defending Rashford would have to do - allowing him to stay higher for counters.

Again, Mount is already a very good 8. It's by far his best role and it's the role he played when Chelsea were at their best.

EtH will be keeping Donny until at least January, he is a better stylistic fit for this change in shape than either Fred or McTominay who could both conceivably leave this summer.

The 8 in a 4231 is one of the “2” - but specifically the more expansive of the two CMs (in my little world). It’s what Eriksen has been playing, on paper, but in practice we’re a staggered 433 with Bruno a bit further forward and skewed to the right. The 433 you’re talking about sounds similar to what we’ve been doing, to all intents and purposes.

If we sign Mount I want to see him showing for it in the core of the midfield and getting involved in developing the play from there, along with Martinez, Casemiro etc, playing through the press. He looks to have the fundamentals.

Well… not really.

The manager tells the scouts what he wants. The scouting team provides the manager with several options. The manager picks from those options.

‘Numbers’ only goes so far. The Brentford player acquisition team goes waaaay beyond the data. They have watched players in restaurants to see how they treat wait staff. None of that has anything to do with stats.

It’s never been a baseballesque ‘He gets on base’. Football is far more nuanced. It’s the totality of everything.

most of your point stands up though of course.

I think that’s a little unfair. He’s played in withdrawn positions infrequently. But he has often been tasked to be an additional defensive screen to close out matches by both Southgate and Tuchel. In big matches too.

I’m not advocating him to be put in that position as a first choice. But if Casemiro is on a card with 15 to go and we’re under pressure, he can be trusted to do so.

He’s a very good footballer. Regardless of whether he’s incredible in any one specified position.

I just think there's potentially excellent synergy between Rashford pushing forward on the left and Mount exploiting space from the LCM area. I find the reactions in this thread to be completely baffling, to be quite honest.

it's all posturing ... it's not like Chelsea has a lot of leverage here. They have about 274 players in their squad and they won't let him walk for free next season.

Ok, good luck balancing the books then :D
Would be great if there was to be a collective agreement to not buy anyone from them. Everybody run their contract down!

Mount has only scored more than 13 once. For Vitesse in 2017/18.
Ahh he’s played in Holland. It suddenly all makes sense. Does Erik have any knowledge of players that aren’t Dutch or played in the Eredivisie?

This is exactly why we need a proper recruitment team, not constantly giving all the power to the manager. No other big club works this way anymore.

Ok then, United will take him for free next season.
Exactly this. It’s only cheap if they have someone else ready to step in. I don’t understand how the need to sell strengthens their hand.
Ten Hag may want Mount but there’s no reason why we can’t look long term with this. He and Kane in a free next year gives us fantastic scope to build a squad as we are right now

Yep, that’s what he’s basing amount on..those 29 games in Holland

They have a player who wants to stay and is settled in London. He’s using all these offers to justify a huge pay increase to the board.

I think he’ll stay if he’s not sold before pre-season. Poch will love him and force a big contract.

I'm not even joking but this would be the biggest question mark over ETH (if he is involved heavily with the transfer) for me ALL season. I wasn't even this 'bothered' after the 7-0.

I'm genuinely baffled at the fees and wages quoted. He's not a bad player but to actively make him a priority signing that will eat a large portion of our budget?!

If it does go through and he performs, I'd happily eat humble pie etc but fecking double yikes.

Not really, Mount is one of the few players who is a saleable asset and can really help with their ffp situation.
A situation which needs addressing by the end of the month.

which is fine for me, btw. I've never been that high on Mount and certainly don't want to blow a lot of money on him with a year left on a deal, especially since we have other holes to fill.

Whether it's a 433 and 4231, it's a question of balance.

Bruno is about as pure as an attacking midfielder as you're likely to get, whether he's playing as one of two 8s, or as a number 10. Which means the 2nd number 8 in your midfield should be someone who complements Bruno, with Bruno being a highly attacking player with fairly poor ball retention who is not very physically imposing.

The ideal number 8 to play alongside Bruno would surely be someone who is on the side of defensively responsible, physically imposing, and has very good ball retention. The problem with Mount is he's spent basically his entire career playing Bruno's role himself, or even the role of a wide attacker. He has always been the most attacking player of any midfield he has played in, and we're bringing him in to play alongside one of the most pure attacking midfielders in world football in Bruno. Mount will be expected to collect the ball from deeper than he's ever been asked to do and to do more defensive work in his own half than he's ever been asked to do. I just find it hard to believe of all the midfielders we've scouted on the planet, he's the best profile of player to displace Eriksen in our starting 11.

I hope I'm as wrong about this as I was about Martinez to be fair.
