Onana wasn't. He signed for Inter in Jan window.
On a free no? I could be wrong but I’m fairly sure he was released from Ajax? I stand corrected if so. Anyway it’s not like we didn’t know we’d need a sweeper keeper this summer or that DDGs contract was about to expire. There really seems to be a deep disconnect between the owners delivering the best squad to succeed on the pitch in a timely cost effective fashion and the managers ability to work around that. By the time the owners decide what to do we've always lost the better or more shrewd option to more savvy outfits and clubs are ready to rinse us as we regroup. It seems like they are stuck in the past thinking football recruitment and scouting will wait around for us because of the brand and the wages we offer. That’s no use if we are always playing catch-up and overspending. We are currently run like a very unsuccessful version of Real Madrid and It’s sad to see.

If it was me I would use the free transfer market for players who clearly deserve a bigger wage/stage and for solid short term cover squad players. As a rule then every season search for the 5 best over 18 players in the world not at clubs they won’t leave. I mean the Enzos, Alvarez and Caciedos of this world. We can’t do what city do and write off 50 million quid players on their prime after a season or two and even they could see Alvarez was a good deal. He’d be a starter for us. We still have to develop players and I think we can do that and at least keep making top 4 while that happens. We have older hands and a good manager here now to guide them. We need to develop the team and club for the longer term and not just panic buy top 4 every summer last minute when the owners finally wake up from their 12 months of slumber.

Onana was horribly out of form the last months for Ajax. Inter made a gamble. He wasn't contracted as their first keeper and when he played he made the same mistakes as when he played for the Ajax' second team. He redeemed himself and got his mojo back but it was a gamble for Inter. One that paid off but I can see why United might not have been interested. Still a little stupid if you consider his track record.

What is he thinking in half of those clips
This signing makes me feel nothing but terrified! If he tries any of that hanky panky in the premier league, he’ll get punished soon enough and we’ll have media doing story on him every other week. I can see Carra, Merson and Souness licking their lips already.

He is bound to be on the wrong end of a few memes with his play style, but it's always going to transform our tactics. I want him.

I’m sure we’ll concede the odd few with his kamikaze stepping out but I can see us building a lot more chances starting from the back with him. To be fair we’ve been conceding howlers with De Gea anyway so I’m not too fussed either way. We’d have a pretty press resistance defence with Onana, Shaw, Martinez and Varane.

he's a fantastic shot stopper and he's brilliant with his feet....40m release clause is not a bad deal at all and it would remove DeGea from being #1 and not paying him a stupid weekly wage

Easiest decision in years, literally just need to say no to a new contract which would save millions in his exorbitant wages

Every passing day since the FA Cup Final that DDG has not signed this supposed new contract has made it more likely he’s obviously going (probably looking at other offers).

And this move would pretty much cement his exit surely. I think the club ideally would like both Onana and DDG but I don’t think DDG is going to settle with the paycut and demotion.

It's crazy that we were even making provisions for an eventuality where De Gea stays. Hope we get there in the end, even if not by design.

It is so weird how we seem to be approaching this as "priority 1 is de Gea extends but if not, we can go get Onana"... Its honestly wild. It's like ... Maybe Fred will extend but if not we can always just go out and sign Luka Modrić.

I love Dave but Onana is literally exactly what we need.

Baffles me when our fans worry about how the media and pundits talk about our players. You guys know it's hardly ever going to be positive. Why do you let it bother you??

Why do United need to wait DDG decision, if we truly want Onana? It's not like we need to sell DDG to fund Onana's transfer. It's in United's hand to extend or not.

Are people ok with the fact that Onana was free last year?
