One of the very few transfers we’ve made in the last 10 years that wasn’t a disaster.
Exact opposite? Mata wasn't a flop. He didn't became our key player but he was ok signing. He did scored 50 (i think) goals for us. He had some good spells in our shirt.
He was a club record signing on high wages and turned out to be absolutely nothing special. Not a disaster, but extremely underwhelming. If we had signed a relatively cheap squad player then it would have been a good signing, but we didn’t. When we signed him expectations were really high.

I still think we're overpaying for a player with only 1 year left of contract. In terms of market strategy it doesn't make much sense. But I actually rate Mount, think he'll do well with us.

Iirc Mata also won their Player of the Year awards twice. Those awards meant nothing.

We held many cards, but we're Man United, haggling over pennies is beneath us. 55m is a fair number for everyone I suppose.

Was very skeptical about him at first but the more I've thought about it, the more I've warmed to him joining. Very good age, versatile across midfield and can play further forward, technically good and has good experience. Not many of our lot have won much yet this guy has a UCL medal. An upgrade to some of our midfield.

I know the fee is higher than most would have liked given his contract situation but imagine him staying and having a blinder of a season for Chelsea and he either stays or another big club turns his head then we could have lost out on him completely. Glad we've got him in so we have a decent midfielder who can play 90mins instead of watching Eriksen play well for 45mins and then get gassed for the remainder until we turn to McFred!

Could very well be. Mata’s G+A stats for Chelsea in the two seasons 2011-2013 were insane, like GOAT level.

That’s not true. We’ve basically exclusively played 3atb since 2021. There’s no room for an 8 in that system. All the other midfielders rotated around in the double pivot while Mount was shoved into a front 3 position.
Ah ok, fair enough.

I'm interested to see how we'll line up next season with Mount, and whether we'll go to midfield 3 with 2 #8s, or stick with a double pivot. I imagine it'll be the former, although in reality it will change depending on whether we're in or out of possession.

If we're selling Fred, I really hope we're going to be giving Mejbri a proper go next season. I would much rather we sold DVB before we sold Fred, who's proven to be a really good squad player.
That's the odd or perhaps not the odd thing.
The very weakest players that we want to get rid off, Donny vd B, Harry M- nobody wants to buy.
But if someone is good enough to stay and be a back up, then someone will buy them. So possibly Fred and McT or Victor get sold and the ones mentioned above stay.

How does selling a player for a loss work for FFP, and are players written of on a straight line basis over their length of contract ?

Thanks.

Mata at Chelsea was top top tier. Mata at United was largely massively underwhelming. Another square peg in a round hole. Poor mans David Silva. Far too lightweight and had the pace of a slug.

Absolutely lovely chap and always worked his pants off but man was I disappointed with his time at United. Absolutely rated him at Chelsea and was so excited to have him at United.

Price seems high and it's not really an exciting signing, but he's an upgrade on McFred at least. I hope that I'm underrating him and ETH knows what he's doing

Depends what Mount we get to be fair. Mount from a couple of years ago was a beast, amazing player. Then he just went meh.
Hopefully a new challenge and ETH screaming some broken English at him will bring him back.

Still, a big gamble for that kinda money.

I have concerns about him as we still lack that cover for Casa and playmaker to progress from deep, however he will be a Utd player so gonna fully back him as I would anyone who puts on shirt

Mata was one of the best players in Europe whilst he was at Chelsea. He didn't suite us because we had inept coaching for a long time which meant that our attack relied on players being able to do things based on individual moments of magic which he didn't have the pace or power for. That doesn't mean Mata wasn't a wonderful player.

When we played Mase in midfield instead of wing, one very true criticism was he was constantly too far forward in attack creating a huge gap in the middle. Fix that and Mase will cook. He truly does have a tireless motor.
Having Bruno next to him will surely fix that... I fear for Casemiro.

He wasn't like David Silva at all, and that was the problem. Silva's dribbling ability and ability to attract play through his one twos, using his strong balance on the ball is what made him special, more similar to Iniesta. The problem with us at the time is we assumed Mata could come with similar impact, where Mata was just another lightweight spanish no.10 who had little impact on play despite having good technique. He could make good runs, but his lack of strength, balance and inability to impose himself on games just wasn't worth the hassle.

Mata was a really effective number 10 working in and around the box. We consistently stuck him on the right side of midfield.

He played his best on the right under mourinho, for good reason. He tended to disappear when played in the middle.

Yeah but that's because it was Mourinho, who found the notion of an attack-minded 10 so offensive at Chelsea that he sold not only Mata to you but also KdB to Wolfsburg.

We couldn't accommodate him and Rooney in the same team so we shifted him out to the wing or to a deeper position he wasn't suited for. I'm hoping we don't have similar issues with Mount + Bruno, but I can't help but notice many parallels.

This is as bad a signing as we could have made. Offers absolutely nothing in terms of what we needed to address given the gaping chasms that exist in the team and we've blown 55m on him. Yet another player we'll struggle to shift down the line.
we could have spent 75m on him, that would have been a worse signing

These football commentators are idiots as far as I am concerned. I tried watching espn fc and someone said they don't understand why we are trying to buy a midfielder because midfield was our strongest department, I quickly switched it off.
 That's the thing I don't understand. They're discussing a top team like United, not some relegation teams. And you'd assume for someone that do football commenting as career, should be way more knowledgeable than most football fans.

Strange how you think you have a better idea than EtH with regards to what his team needs.

Knew we would give in and pay 60 mill. Not the most exciting signing, the money should've went to a new striker.

Have only seen him playing for England, where he doesn't do much except run around. I assume he's been better at Chelsea as Tuchel is a smarter manager than Southgate and look forward to seeing what EtH has in mind for him.

Good signing, Mount has excellent technical skills and can run all day long. Now we can get rid of Fred.
