Rooney at 17 was more gifted than most 20year olds
Indeed, Rooney at 17 years was more gifted than every 20 year player during this time we bought him. He’s been an unique talent at this time.

Hojlund is a young prospect who needs to be polished rightly to develop his full potential. Only thing which concerns me that we pay too much so I’m happy with us pushing back and refusing this required utopic amount. 60 mio max. would be more than enough.

Atalanta playing hardball by asking for £86m, according to a report on TalkSPORT just now.
I get the feeling that the price was settled at around €60m+€10-15m through intermediaries last week and the clubs are just doing final things before making formal bid (due diligence, Atalanta finding a replacement etc.). All this noise is just media clickbaiting or clubs putting these stories out to make their negotiators look good.

What's the plan B if Atalanta don't budge?
Greenwood I guess. Football wise only it's actually a safer one imo.

Btw just read this on the express uk:

We asked our readers whether Greenwood should be a United player in the 2023/24 campaign. And 61.4 per cent of the 11,693 people who responded said “yes.” Meanwhile, just under 25 per cent of readers said the forward should be sold, while 13.6 per cent said he should be loaned out.

Doubt if Greenwood is able to walk right in and start for United. Best case scenario: is that he will be eased into the 1st 11 gradually and possibly be ready to start by only January.
The best option is to loan him out so he gets as much playing time as possible -- guaranteed if possible to get back his match fitness & sharpness.

Honestly I simply don't get the option of loaning out. If the club decides that it would retain footballing relationship with the player, then a loan achives nothing (unless it's an agreed first step before selling). It has to be either playing or selling the player.

How is Greenwood a safer option he hasn't played for almost 2 years and even before that he hardly played as Striker at senior level , with Martial being a sicknote leaving Rashford as our only other option we definitely need a Striker.

He has no match fitness or sharpness -- and looked to have lost muscle mass which he had gained a couple of seasons ago. He can only get that by playing.

But its a chicken & egg scenario here. Would ETH want to risk playing him or even starting him? With our schedule?

Or is it better if he gets to play regularly in a lower league -- in England or abroad so he can get his match fitness/sharpness and confidence back?

Of course it's hard to be sure he hasn't played any competitive football for 18 months. But it's been reported that he's been training privately for months to keep fit and it's very likely the club would keep tabs on this imo.

Then ETH reportedly would want him back, that means he thinks Geenwood would be useful for him imo. ETH surely has more information on this and probably has even seen him training as well. It'd be quite daft imo if his decision was based only on what Greenwood did 18 months ago.

Let's see how this deal goes. If we'd be priced out of a deal for Hojlund there's a big chance we'll keep Greenwood imo.

How is Greenwood a safer option he hasn't played for almost 2 years and even before that he hardly played as Striker at senior level , with Martial being a sicknote leaving Rashford as our only other option we definitely need a Striker.
He'd cost us £0. Then in the last season with us he has showed his ability as a #9 for a couple matches before Ronaldo arrived. Needless to talk about his scoring ability and potential imo.

Loaning out imo is when we don't want to keep him for the next season. We'll look to loan him out then sell him later if the loan goes well. Or call him back if we'd need him. Nobody gonna buy him now imo. Or only at a very low price.

Given the anti-Kane briefs today, sounds like it would be Kolo-Muani from most reports
I think Kolo would cost more than Hojlund to be fair. Early reports were saying they wanted at least 100m for him.

And I'm saying that we have plenty of money and more wouldn't help.
If you think we’re in for Mbappe, then you think we have more money than we actually do. If we did have that much money it would be plenty. It doesn’t bother me, but we simply don’t have that much money.

Think of it this way. If “more money” wouldn’t help, does it follow that “less money“ wouldn’t be a problem?

Sky sports have just put article up Ten Hag saying they have made progress in signing a CF so I'm assuming it's this guy. Looks like matter of time now. Wants him in soon to integrate in to the team

From what I’ve seen he looks a bit clumsy on the ball (first touch). Hope I’m wrong after our most recent no 9 being Weghorst and our last young no 9 - Lukaku.

I’m not sure the technical aspect of a players game can be easily taught.

Strangely and maybe I am wrong, but Greenwood always gave me the impression that he is one of those ultra talented players that can come in at any time and boss the field, like semi drunk and still be level above most.

Has the potential to be the next Rooney for Ten Hag.

Strong, built like a brick shithouse, pacey and a hard worker on and off the ball. His finishing will improve and he'll become an even better striker under Benni McCarthy.

Maybe that was part of the problem. His ego just blew up having been over-indulged by the management for years. Feckin Southgate too -- ignored the advice of the United team and brought him into the national/global limelight way too early. Too much too soon.

Lets hope this last 18 months out has matured him somewhat. He is only 21.

Honest question did you see Rooney play at that age ? Even on television ? I'm Irish so I'm well used to Brittish media hyping up English talented players that are emerging but Rooney was well worth the hype .I'm not saying you are wrong I haven't seen enough of this lad to say he is even near that category but he would want to be a generational talent to be even put into that category .

Rooney was already a better player than Hojlund is now. I think it's going to take him some time to adapt to the PL also.

Think of it this way. We don't need to buy every player on the market and outspend every club in every transfer window.

That's not how successful clubs operate.

Agree with most of your points. ETH is looking at it from a purely footballing perspective. Its the commercial side of the club that I suspect is pushing back.

But even if it's a footballing decision to keep him -- you can loan him out to let things simmer down plus offer him regular playing time to improve match fitness/sharpness. And if he does well, then bring him back into the fold the following season.

By then we would have a more experienced/settled Hojlund and a rejuvenated Greenwood leading our line. The club that introduced a 4 striker rotation can currently cobble up together 1 striker at the moment -- amazing.

I wanted to jump in and defend him and say perhaps he meant stylistically but the only similarity really is their strength and explosiveness, other than that they were very different ability levels at the same age and very different players..

It's weird have many just expect MG to continue where he left if he came back.
Talks about morals aside, he hasn't played or even trained in the team for close to 2 years and there has to be a mental aspect as well unless he's not human.

I can't see it happening as there are very few players who go on to be comparable to Rooney, but saying it's utter nonsense when you have no idea of how he will develop is also wrong. No one would look at a 20 year old Lewandowski and think he would be one of the world's best strikers.

Whilst I personally think he should be allowed the chance to come back, it's going to be a big ask. He's missed almost 2 years of football at a critical point in development, as in he has not even trained in that time. Who knows if he will ever be able to get back to where he was. We can't bank on him being good enough for us anymore.

This. The problem is he doesn't look anything special, he's tall and reasonably fast but there's no finesse to his game and that is partly down to being a bit clumsy/heavy on the ball. We should be paying much lower fee for him but seems like everyone knows we're desperate for a striker, so the fees mentioned are mind boggling.
I don't care that much about fees, this is a very complicated issue but he needs a couple more seasons in friendly environment, I don't fancy the idea of Rasmus leading the line for United, he simply doesn't look ready. This is not the right moment for him to move to a big club IMO.

Whilst I personally think he should be allowed the chance to come back, it's going to be a big ask. Greenwood comes and owns the right wing, he is the most natural footballer we had at the club in years. There are question marks about his mental state obviously, and as much as I'd love to see him flying on that right side, I am not getting my hopes up to ever see him again in United shirt.
The problem with Greenwood however is he was never effective in playing back to goal, he is similar to Rashford that way. BUT - if we could rotate striker / Rashford / Greenwood at CF I think we're good for a season.
