I remember when people used to praise Woodward for making transfers.
Thanks for replying, it's good to hear where someone else's views the summer. Unfortunately I don't agree. We played the majority of this pre season without a striker. It's not ideal preparation for this season in a key area. Yes we got players in time for new season but will we be ready? You expect us to sell players easily? Where is this confidence coming from? How is anyone supposed to sell a player like Maguire for, lets say, 30 million, when he's on 200k a week. West Ham are supposedly interested right? That 200k a week makes him their highest earner. Nobody in their right mind is going to go for that, as he isn't going to lower his demands, and quite frankly why should he? Its the same for players like Henderson, who is on 120k a week. Forest want him but at 120k he becomes their highest earner, as a goalkeeper. You must be living in La-La Land to just expect them to snap their fingers and magically sell players. What you say is just not based in reality. What we paid for Onana wasn't too bad, Ederson signed for City in 2017 for about the same. Kepa signed for Chelsea in 2018 for 80 million. Allison signed the same year for 62 million. The 45 million for Onana doesn't sound that bad in context. Mount, maybe was a bit much considering his 1 year left, but compared to Rice for 105 million, Maddison for 46 million, or Tonali for 64 million, or even Szoboszlai for 70 million, it's again not that bad. And that's without even talking about Havertz.
Then your going to complain about 75 million or w/e for Hojlund, and I'm sure you will say we should only have paid like 50 million. Well, lets see what that number gets you. Matheus Cunha was 50 million, Richarlison was 60 million, Abraham was 40 million etc. Hell, we signed Martial in 2015 for 50 million. The striker signing in particular we were always going to get raked across the coals for. Everyone and their dog knows we desperately need one because Martial is a crock, MG is an idiot, and then we have no one else other than those two.
He paid less than what each club wanted

Exactly, we’ve done well to sign 3 very good players in crucial areas quickly with signs pointing towards maybe another midfielder and a back up goalkeeper incoming. Also selling elanga, Telles and probably Fred, bailly , McT aswell, transformative. For quickness i give him praise this year. The fact that manager will have full team this early in season IS a huge thing. Respect for that.
So we got the asking price down from €90m to €85m for someone who's less proven than Nunez. Don't get me wrong, I like the signing but wtf is this negotiation.
People were joking that the Atalanta negotiator was the guy who scammed us for £80m for Maguire but he's done it bloody again.
Granted, Hojlund is a striker, prices are inflated and the market is short of these players but come on. Don't anyone praise this guy as if he's rewriting the transfer negotiation book.
Does this guy even negotiate? We are ending up with paying close to what selling club wanted (and way above our starting valuation).
You don't fecking need to buy every player which you manager wants. Move on to another target then and there. Now every club in Europe know that when Murtough is coming he will pay whatever is needed.
Good thing is that this is his last summer as Dof at least.
Onana had agreed on a contract with Inter last year January. Caicedo was a different club hierarchy.Onana signed on a free transfer 12 months ago. Hojlund signed for 15m 12 months ago. We had the chance to sign Caicedo for a pittance a couple of years ago.
Positive we are getting deals across the line, but maybe we could start spotting them a little earlier.
Agreed, good job so far this and last summer. Would disagree regarding Antony and Hojlund but eh.Whine, whine, whine. He has done a good job this summer, and certainly - by far - the best job in the last ten years at this club.
Is bolded not contradictory? The context for sure matters, but part of that context is the rest of the market. If we paid 50 million for Mount and other big name players were going for 20 million, I would say it was a terrible price. But when similar profiled players are going for roughly the same amount then I don't consider it to be terrible. I did concede yeah we may have overpaid for Mount considering he had 1 year left on his deal, however, you can still look at the market, and my opinion was I don't think it was too bad. I don't think the Onana deal was bad either. I also disagree that there wasn't a clear vision. I think DDG was considered expendable day 1, we just had more pressing issues. Hence why we offered him the contract. The availability of Onana would have made us consider rushing the timeline on getting a new keeper (which we would have gotten anyway, presumably next year). Thanks for replying, it's good to hear where someone else's views the summer. I'm not accepting these fees are good, whataboutery was magnificent there. You can't compare other amounts to make the deal look not less expensive, it's about context. What the club can offered to pay and how much we need it, we needed a lot, especially up front. Mount was overpaying, year left. Nobody will convince me that we didn't overpay there, the season he had with a year left with the state of Chelsea (no European football)Onana slightly, the mess with keepers this Summer, offering a contract and changing our mind, poor leadership and strategy. Sent out the wrong message to other clubs, wasn't a sign of clear vision.
I'm excited for Rasmus potential but it's a gamble for the price paid, it's far from a sure thing and that price puts more pressure on now(you know it does). I think some fans in here are annoyed that some are shtin on there parade. Say they are moaning, whinging ect and want to stay ultra positive but there must be concerns, especially how some are reacting in here. It's on to hostile, I can't give credit to someone who's main role is to negotiate and isn't getting a good price, any time so far in the incomings. That's the main issue I have with John.
I'm not sure whether it's ETH or Murtough or the new scouting department. Overall we have improved tremendously from seasons before.
We didn't just went for obvious target. We went for players like Mount, Hojlund, Onana, Amrabat to fit the system we play instead of chasing superstar all summer like Sancho, FDJ, Pogba and the likes all summer.
Mate, lets be honest here; these kind of signings me and you could deliver. Manager pointed out who he wants and John payed what is needed.
Mate, you spend about 80% of your time talking shite on the internet. You couldn't deliver a fecking pizza.

No he won’t because he overpaid regardlessIf Antony suddenly turns into Robben this season, Murtough would be hailed as a genius for the last summer as well.

I'm sure the hunt for a CF will continue. It would be a miracle if Hojlund scores 15+ goals. And the jury is still out on RW spot. After this summer, we have filled all the gaps, especially if fe get Amrabat. I think next summer will be even better then, because then we don't have to panic and can search for cheaper targets and more 'Pellistri signings'. Atleast I hope so.
You think he's going to turn into prime Robben? If Antony turns into Robben, it'd be a steal for that price.

Could say that about any player couldn't we but we all know, it doesn't work that way unfortunately.Of course not, but in the wild hypothetical, he turns into a steal for the price.

To be fair, Antony debuted for us with the opening goal against Arsenal. He also scored the winning goal against Barcelona which ended our dreadful run of loss to them. So I'm ready to cut the guy some slack and place high hopes on him. He did score in the big occasions, something Lukaku could only dream of even after 2 years with us.One can dream but Robben's left foot was absolutely lethal. He played mainly using his left foot similar to Antony but the end product (even when Robben was young) was world apart.

No De Jong, no Harry Kane though. And Declan Rice would have been useful to us.He's pretty much given Ten Hag the majority of signings he's asked for.
He had a better first season than many posters on here will admit. And we didn't buy the finished article, ten Hag and the club knew when we bought him that he still had plenty of growing to do. I remember it was mentioned in a few articles that United recognized that Antony was a signing more for the future. To be fair, Antony debuted for us with the opening goal against Arsenal.
