Assuming he continues where he left off last season, what would Manchester United fans expect to pay next summer?

I think January is very unlikely as there will probably be another 25% on the value, assuming again he is having a great season.

With Mainoos injury and of course his age, I still think we’re lacking steel in midfield. Caicedo is great at playing around the press but is also an excellent ball winner and runner.
I think he would really suit us. Just hope he sticks with Brighton for the season and we can try in future.
Of course, Amrabat would give us more of what’s required for now, so hopefully that gets done.

Personally think Lavia will be just as good a player and will cost half as much (and is homegrown). He’s currently just a year behind in his development, which is fine for us given he wouldn’t be expected to lead the line week in week out for another couple years.

See, if Brighton admit they do t think ANY club would match their valuation this Summer, then by their own reasoning they made the valuation outside of reason, therefore “unreasonable”, and therefore publicly admitting a lie to their player.

They already intrinsically broke their promise when they tried to hold the deal hostage pending another player (Colwill).

I can’t imagine any of this will go over well with Caicedo, or any other player they try to convince they’re “helping” in the future.
I see we have a professor of semantics in here! You've got them dead to rights there mate, they have no option but to sell him to you for £20m and a packet of salt and vinegar crisps now!

I'd expect us to maybe go in for him next summer if he's still available
Wow, thats awesome news. Think we can outbid any rivals if we want to next summer, at least if Højlund gets going and MG returns so there is no pressing need for a striker

Dont get all the "with Mainoos injury we should be in for him"....I love Mainoo, have said all summer dont think we need a defensive midfielder as I think he breaks through this season as an undestudy to Casemeiro and a number 8 and will get opportunities, but he barely has a senior appearanec yet and is still very young.....its not like a star player is out injured and he will probably be back within a couple of months of the season starting.

I think Caicedo is a racking young player, but I do find it astonishing (and funny) Brighton have turned down £80m for him, I guess the Rice and Bellingham fees has pushed the bar, but as good as he is, is he a £100m player? None of them are, all top top players and Bellingham may well go on to prove himself worthy of the fee, but he isnt one yet.

Chelsea paid 100m for a midfielder after six month in the Portuguese league and yet are refusing to do the same for another highly rated midfielder whose done it in the EPL. I think what Brighton are asking is fair considering the current market.
Brighton will keep signing this players because the Caicedos of this world wouldn't turn down the opportunity to play in the EPL. If you really want him pay up.
I believe you wouldn't be saying this if it was united in negotiation with Brighton

Brighton are not trying to sell, so it's not on them to lower the price for others to match. It's on buying club to make a bid that is acceptable for Brighton.

If he stays at Brighton, and if he has another season as good or better than the last, he’ll be classed as one of the best midfielders of his type with the only saving grace/question mark being can he do it in the CL against other midfielders of the highest repute outright.

I should think if you’re Chelsea and you’re serious about the player, this is realistically your only chance to buy before the kid is considered a priority pursuit for every club in the shark-infested waters of nabbing the best of the best.

It shows Brighton really believe in the player and their own valuation to remain steadfast this window thoroughly of the belief they’ve got a true star in their midst who is more likely to appreciate in value than remain the same or even tumble - many clubs would not hold their nerve in the same circumstances for fear of the loss of such an epic payload coming their way… between themselves and Chelsea, it will be interesting to see who holds their nerve. Brighton don’t have the air of bluffing, so if they are, they’re doing one hell of a job with it up until this point in the window.

If Brighton aren't bluffing, isn't he the most expensive player playing for a midtable side?

Top players don't play for midtable teams - that's the sad reality of modern football. He will a goner before September 1, I think.

(P.S. Don't get started that Brighton are not a midtable side.)

It's not often you see club just completely refuse to budge in inch in their valuation.

I think because they've already had our pants down with Cucurella and they ended up with a better coach when we poached Potter (though they were all fuming at the time), they think 'it's Chelsea they'll eventually pay up' and for me I think this is the reason we should walk away. I love Caicedo as a player and I think he would elevate our team so much but I'd walk away on principle alone.

They were just as defiant with Arsenal, weren't they?

And I think it's imperative they establish themselves as a strong-handed player and not some pushover that can be plundered willy nilly. It'll make all clubs look at them differently when they invariably go in for some of the other leading lights, and Caicedo, if you don't get it done this summer.

Without that defiance, you turn into Southampton and end up cannibalising yourself.

I think they've made that point. We've already paid them near 80M for Cucurella and Potter. Chelsea appear to be determined to not go to 100M, but appear to be flexible in how high they'll go under that figure. Brighton don't seem to be interested in anything below 100M.

Arsenal bid once I think and walked away. It was January and they had limited time. Chelsea have bid 4 times and have received no indication that Brighton are willing to engage in negotiations. Which is fair enough. He's their player but it does strike as an odd way to move. If they hold on to him now, and then United or some other club offer them over 100M next summer, then fair play. I doubt it though.

Chelsea understand the ramifications of letting him stay one more season and seeing his price go up plus allowing other clubs back into the race for him. They will pay up this summer.

I'm going to ignore the white text and pose another question - why would Caicedo want a sideways move to another midtable side in Chelsea?

Point is, they're showing that they are happy enough for things to end in an impasse that doesn't hurt them or their aspirations. If you're not offering them the valuation they've set, don't you think you're wasting your own time, time that could be spent offering another club similar money for a player of that profile?

If they do hold firm, and you either yield or walk away, I'm sure we'll not see this kind of carry on from clubs coming in for their other leading lights next summer. They're going to be dealing with this kind of furore for Ferguson once they set the price, otherwise. I'm not sensing they're bluffing.

I mean it's hardly a carry on. How else would you say a team should try and sign a player? No team is going to ask how much Brighton value a player and then immediately pay the asking price. United didn't offer the valuation we set for Mount. They went nearly 30M less to start off but because we were open for negotiating we both adjusted our positions until we met at a number both clubs were happy with. That's usually how it goes.

I don't think it's unreasonable to think a club might adjust their valuation slightly from their starting point. Most clubs would, but fair enough if Brighton don't want to do that. They'll get to keep the player and we'll all get on with our lives.

I understood their stubbornness in this caicedo saga. They have a quality player and they want to keep him for their european adventure.

If caicedo goes its on their term. I hope either chelsea met their valuation and sign their player or just sign another defensive midfielder who can be helpful to the team.

They did the same during Cucurella deal also right, they didn't reduce the fee and City sort of stalled the deal, Chelsea paid the asking price.

Don't think many big deals happened with them to have a proper sample size, looks like they want the similar fee the was paid for Rice.

In a normal circumstance Chelsea should walk away as Brighton's valuation on Caicedo is just way too high. Does Chelsea has other alternative on their list?

Arsenal overpaid for Rice, but Rice at least has more EPL experience and an English passport.

Yeah, we paid the asking price immediately for Cucurella and they've been laughing at us ever since

Brighton sources have already briefed some in the media they will be declining a £90m written bid from Chelsea, which is to be faxed in the coming days. Meanwhile, Caicedo is the only key player not to have taken part in today’s promotional events for sponsors, including photoshoots and the like.

I think if he’s in the starting XI for our final preseason friendly on Sunday, he stays. If he’s not, a deal has been done for the asking price set. Still rumours about a deal involving Conor Gallagher (“reports” varying from £60m-£80m plus the player for Caicedo) but nothing concrete.

You'd think Chelsea would have worked out by now that Brighton aren't knocking anything off the asking price.

And as we all know they'll end up paying up in full.

Chelsea will get him in the end unfortunately
Sadly, everything seems to go that way. Chelsea have the money and need player like him also.

Although if we get Camavinga next season, all is good then.

Think Chelsea should just leave him for next season - I don’t see him rising in his fee and there’s more chance he actually declines than turn in to a 120+ mil type player

Both are midtable, but one midtable offers much more money than the other midtable ever would.
