Problem here is that the record is not that old. Shearer set the record and three years later Kane was on the Spurs bench as a youngster. He could set the record and the next record holder is only 11/12 years away from beating it so where does the achievement sit then? It’s gone forever and he has no medal for it

Football is about winning trophies as a team, not personal records. Easy for Owen to say that when he won trophies at Liverpool before his move to Real Madrid. Plus Bayern have a chance of winning the Champions League.

Only 3 weeks in the market and Spurs won't get a better (or two) than Kane.

Son will be their best asset.

Happy that he leaves, weakening a rival.

Because no one will remember Shearer after Kane breaks it? Just breaking the record in the first place is enough for a decent legacy. Playing devil's advocate here.

Eh? Bayern have won the last 11 league titles. In the prem during that time, there have been 5 different winners. How is that "no difference"?

Come on City have won five from the last six and it should have been six.

That's not likely to change this year either. They are the dominant force in the same way Bayern are.

In fact Bayern have probably had a harder time running it lately than City.

It will be strange not having Kane in the PL. On the other hand, this almost removes Tot being discussed as a possible top 4 which is good for us.

Playing in the German league is a bit of a boring option tbf but Bayern Munich are one of the World's mega clubs. I don’t bother with much German football usually due to its lack of competition (enjoyed last seasons run in and drama) but this will be interesting to see.

I'm surprised he is going to go there, really expected him to stay put this summer.

It might not be for him, considering he's spent his entire career dragging an average to good team. He might like the idea of spending his 30s scoring 40 a season, experiencing winning in a great city and having a couple of serious runs at the Champions League.

I’m not saying nobody will remember Shearer, he’ll be remembered without the record. Same way Kane will be remembered if he falls just short so I’m asking why is the record so important? If it’s important to hold it then it’s a blow when it’s lost. It’s too new of a record to hold any importance.

I’ll try to explain it this way, Kane is only 4/5 goals ahead of Rooney as it stands now and Wayne burnt out early. If he kept up his fitness he would hold the record (imo) over Shearer as we speak so it would have changed hands 3 times over 15 odd years if Kane does break it.
It doesn’t scream career defining to me which it’s being set up to be. All it takes is for Haaland to stay at City or a Qatar backed Mbappe move to already put it into immediate danger

On point A, how is it obvious that he preferred us over Bayern. Maybe I missed some credible sources in this regard but he never held out for United's bid. On point B, we are Spurs rivals whether you accept it or not for top 4 position. Stop being arrogant!
On point C, I was talking about Levy folding for selling to the rival.
A. You know he’s only like 40 goals away from the greatest Prem goalscorer ever and we are the biggest club in England.

B. Same as my last point. We are the biggest club in England. We have 3 rivals. Liverpool, Man City and whoever is close to challenging our status. Spurs sit in neither buckets and are not our rivals.

C. See B. We aren’t rivals.

Wait people are seriously thinking we need to go and bid 100m on a 30 year old Kane? You out of your mind? That's not what a smart club who is still transitioning does. That's when you are fully developed, playing at a high and consistent level but just 1 CF away from potentially winning it all - like City were pre haaland.
Well you spent £70m on a 30-year-old Casemiro so why not?

A. So where is it obvious he prefers us?

All you've stated is that he is close to being the top goal scorer. Nowhere have you said how he prefers us.

Id have no issues with us acquiring Kane on a free (even if it hampers Hojlund initially). A free transfer would have little impact on our other transfers. I just wouldn’t want us to pay what spurs are asking for now when we’ve just spent a load on addressing that position as it is.

If Hojlund ends up having a dream debut season and finishes close to 20 prem goals (which would be great in his first season) then I’d even hesitate bringing Kane on a free. Especially if our front line is cohesive and playing well together.
That's fair enough. I wouldn't disagree with any of that.

Whoever I bet on
Owen's argument falls flat due to the fact that by moving to Bayern he would also give himself a chance of winning the Champions League.

Two questions, realistically..

Could we afford him
And levy sell to us

could this happen ?
Can we afford him is a difficult question. We technically could use our credit facility.

The fact we are scrambling around to sell before buying Amrabat and a defender indicates that the Glazers would not authorise the usage of it.

Would that change if it was for Harry Kane? Who knows. Otherwise we would have to sell a number of players extremely quickly and would probably be left light in midfield with Jonny Evans as our fourth choice defender.

We’ve continued to shift some huge salaries off the wage bill. We’ve spent his fee equiv already so we could defo have met the asking a month ago. It was obvious he’s moving. I’m not sure he was ever ETH’s first choice it’s looking like. Surely we still could with player sales of Maguire and Scott and Fred get the majority of what’s required….throw in a greenwood loan.

Playing in the CL with a decent chance will be a big attraction. I expect he'd enjoy it over there with his family but making the move will be the biggest thing as Bayern paying this much will want a decent contract length. I really don't put much stock in top PL scorer, he's long way off Jimmy Greaves for the real record, Premier League was just a rebrand. Yes Kane has mentioned it but we don't really know how much he really values the PL record and others will come and break it I'm sure.
