Manchester United name John Murtough as Football Director and Darren Fletcher as Technical Director

IS anyone moaning about prices? We have deadwood that is not good enough, Maguire top of the list. Get him out of the club. Reports suggest ETH made clear he was surplus after his terrible start last season, why is he still here?
The club refused to pay Maguire off, hardly fair to blame the DoF for that after agreeing the sale. That call is coming from up top.

This thread has just become several of the same posters just going round in circles bashing Murtough :boring:

It’s almost like my tagline I just can’t walk away from it….

I know your his biggest supporter but what is there to support really. He doesnt pick any players and hangs ridiculous prices around players like McToms neck, yet sells others for a pittance.

Murtough is just another Glazer traffic cone. structure trying to ‘back the manger’ as much as possible. The world has moved and we’re still living in the 90s with a manager deciding everything on footballing matters and the executives doing the best they can to materialise that. Liverpool and City’s structures are nearly as important to their success as their managers. Them going against the managers picks has actually lead to some great results. We have no quality or expertise to offer over and above the managerial staff.

Nothing will change till the Glazers leave and that doesn’t seem likely anytime soon.

Just curious what players have city turned down who guardiola wanted

Mhm, the 'reasonable' and 'informed' brigade suddenly have run out of 'arguments' (read propaganda), seeing as this guy has shown himself to be incompetent.

Quelle surprise.

Exactly. We simply dont learn. But thats also because the Glazers dont really care

I made this thread years ago. The fans got the type of DOF that they wanted. One who works for/with the manager, rather than one that holds him accountable and drives the club forward. We're in a bigger mess than a lot of people will be willing to admit now and the chickens will come home to roost next summer, when we've got feck all in the FFP budget and we'll have more positions than ever that'll need resolving.

Reckon the reason is who was appointed as Director of Football rather than the position itself. No doubt that is by design more than anything else, of course. Replacing Woodward with Woodward's acolyte is hardly a sign of changing times.

It doesn't really matter, though. It's all ceremonial. Things won't actually change until ownership changes and since that isn't happening we are just stuck where we are for the foreseeable future. Best we can hope for is at some point we win the lottery and get a manager who can do everything by himself (though I personally don't believe such a thing is possible anymore). Remains to be see if that's Ten Hag.

That's exactly why it was done. The whole messaging around the appointment was that the club wanted someone who'd work with the manager. Even the club hierarchy doesn't make any sense. Both the manager and Murtough answer to the CEO.

Any real credible DOF would want the manager reporting into him and probably would've wanted to fire Solskjaer as his first action at the club.

It would be good that he works WITH manager. That is how things should work. Dof and manager working together with DoF being in charge.

We have situation where DoF is just the guy who sign/sell players who manager wants in and out.

They better have something up their sleeve in the way of a midfielder before the deadline or we’re fecked.

This is not a priority and we're well covered in that area. People seem to have gotten carried away with the Amrabat links. Right now we have:
Main: Casemiro, Bruno, Mount, Eriksen
Backups: McTominay, Mainoo, DVB, Mejbri

We didn't have a proper cover for Shaw in LB and they pounced on it when the Cucurella opportunity came up.

When healthy and in form, Casemiro is barely enough in the DM role but if he's injured or suspended, we're screwed. We have NO ONE that can fill that role effectively. NO ONE. A second HEALTHY DM needs to be priority. Mainoo may grow into it but McThom doesn't have the tools or brain for that role as he demonstrated every time he's played there. We also need another proper CB because Verane --who is fantastic when fit -- can't stay healthy and we need a striker who can play more than 20 games per season.

We will probably end up with at least one but it doesn’t mean we aren’t fecked anyway. Complete lack of structure and planning.

Comes to something when this club is having to use last minute loans to see them through transfer windows.

Amazingly, the one position where we actually got rid of dead wood, LB, Shaw goes down just as we loan Williams out. If you wrote about this circus, no one would believe it. "This happens. This is something that happens". Stanley Spector. Magnolia.

Nearly 10 years at the club - overseen one of the most ridiculous periods in the club's history.

He's a specialist in failure and needs to be among the first out the door if the takeover goes through.

Is there a single person on the planet that thinks that when someone buy the club will leave Murtough and Fletcher in their positions?

There's a few on this forum. Give it a few hours and they'll be along to 'explain' everything.

Murtough was made DOF only a couple of years back. He was with the women's team before that and academy before that. Atrributing 10 years of failure to a person who has been in the role for 2 years shows you're a very insightful and wise person indeed.

Who is Rodri's backup at City or Wataru's at Liveroool? Chelsea are the only team filling up the same position with multiple players. Most normal clubs don't have 2-3 DMs who fight for positions, unless you're Spurs under Conte.

Still not convinced the leeches sell up so can easily see those two staying on even though both are out of their depth

Amrabat+Pavard = 42M

WHU bid 60M for McT and Maguire.

Leaving us with 18M, enough to pay Maguire off and still make a profit. Someone for the love of god sack John Murtough.

I gave Mouthouh a benefit of doubt….the guy should collect his P45 as early as 9AM on Friday. Absolutelty tragic transfer window.
The FFP situation isn't down to him for the 100th fecking time. Hes operating with an arm behind his back. Can't flog players on high wages without taking a bit on the fee. Can't buy, can't even make one mistake in overpaying (Antony) without being killed for it even if all his other transfers have been fine.

The absolute donkey overpaying for mediocre players and young unknown players and now we have to feel sorry for him because of the FFP? This clown should be catapulted out of the club by the end of the window.

If we were a bit more competent at selling and didn't indulge the manager with every player he wants, FFP wouldn't be such an albatross around the club's neck. That's on Murtough.

We've only had two overpays though. One each summer in Hojlund and Antony. The latter because of the Glazers.

That's 2 too many though but all big clubs overpay for some transfers at least.

Murtough wasn't the one giving average players massive salaries. He can't sell with one arm tied behind his back.
Come blame Murtough when there's an actual case to.

He also hasn't indulged on every case. He didn't pursue Kane who was first choice, for example.

Mount is not worth 55m. we overpaid by 25m.

Phillips at City, you could even say Stones too given he played in midfield at times last season. Don't recall Rodri having any injury or suspension issues though which helps. Liverpool don't have one which is probably even more concerning given their only no.6 is nowhere near as good as Casemiro.

Second this. We simply need a set up in place to pick the best possible players that suit what the club needs.
You can't have the manager in total charge of who to buy. Of course, they will have an input but you need a set up that compliments each other.
Klopp wanted Draxler over Salah, the others involved told him Salah would be a better fit and look how that turned out.

When will we be leaking the story that the club has plans to restructure the scouting/planning operations at the club, in an attempt to prevent this mad-dash deadline day chaos in the future?

23:01, or will we wait until tomorrow?

Can’t wait until this guy is no longer employed by this club.

Amazing to see how quickly other clubs make business. It's almost too quick to be exciting, no time for gossip.

Having said that, I very much prefer that to what we have. Dilly dally FC.

It's almost as if United are the biggest story in town, demand the most column inches and you're not invested in other clubs transfers.
