Well, redcafe is the only place where the majority of people want him gone or despise him.
The majority in every other platform - Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, website comment sections, want Greenwood back.

If he smashes it in Spain, the floodwaves of "keep him" comments will be even more massive.

It's interesting phenomenon.
Also Reddit... everyone on there seems to want him burned at the stake.

Uniteds statement of recommence his career elsewhere is very interesting. It left open the possibility he could come back after loan spell. They probably want to see if the heat around this goes away.
More likely to retain his contract status, see if he can re-ignite his career and sell him for something. The club have invested in him for 16 years, paid him a good salary. So are well within their rights to get some value out of him.

He’s coming back next year I think. You can laugh at me if I’m wrong but I can see it a mile away.

He’s clearly a scumbag but what I don’t understand is how he can play for Getafe no questions asked, how people like [Irrelevant point] and Partey could play for Chelsea and Arsenal and nothings really mentioned about what they done,

It’s the whole picking and choosing of who can and can’t play by the cancel culture mob that bothers me most about the whole thing. The club bowing to Rachel Riley as if anything she says or does really matters.

Like I said I’m not arsed if he never plays for us again, it’s the hypocrisy of it all that bothers me

He will be back as the loan will end, so the club will be forced to make another decision next summer.

I do expect they’ll be a degree understanding the backlash from spanish fans, at grounds, on social media etc. which will form part of the decision. However, no club gets the attention that we do, so even if the backlash is not of the level we saw the last few weeks, it doesn’t mean that would be the case should he return to play here.

I still expect the club to sell/release him next summer, but they’ll be stronger arguments from certain sets of supporters to keep him should he have a really good season.

Next season? It’s not like Man United to kick the can down the road?!?

Can someone explain this? I thought he will not play for United again and the contract was terminated by mutual agreement?
No, it was just cleverly worded to leave a door open.. or rather “ajar” they were never just going to let a potential 100m walk out the door for another team to benefit

I think that too. The world would have turned that many times by the end of next season, there wont be anything like the same energy. There was clearly too much negativity in general around the club to add Greenwoods return...

If he scores 15+ goals or just generally looks the business somehow after so long out I can imagine it will cause a dilemma again

I think that's what the club will hope to do but I don't think it will happen. He'll still needs to be with his partner and have had a good time PR wise at Getafe as a partner and father. I don't think one year is enough time for fans, staff and the media to shrug things off that he's changed.

If he gets recalled for England and the the backlash isn't too bad or they explain the pictures and audio then maybe it could work but just don't see how it wouldn't be a PR disaster to try and bring him back next summer.

I completely agree with you.

But I feel it will be down to how he performs as well.

The fan narrative will be very different if he has a cracking season banging in goals for fun v/s a season where he looks off the pace.

All said and done, I actually feel the club has played this well.

I think there’s a very good reason as to why the club delayed the decision till so late. They have been looking for the best way to bring him back. A permanent exit this summer was never on the cards.

To be fair, with a bit of luck we will have new owners next summer and likely (hopefully) they would have fired Arnold and co. So it is quite possible that next summer all options will be in table (sell him if he does right, loan him for another season, release him, or keep him).

I noticed that SSN gave the move near-zero coverage.

"Getafe have signed Mason Greenwood on loan from Manchester United" .. and that was it before swiftly moving on.

I’ve gone on record on various social media account's weeks ago saying Greenwood will go away for a season, and will return to united and be integrated into the first team, and I stand by that. In the balance sheet he is pure profit as he is an academy player, but because of what has happened this really limits the clubs that will take him. It would be music to their (Glazers, Murtagugh, Arnold) as this saves them probably 100 million on a striker as they will be banking on Hoijland bagging a few and be settled by then.

If he performs well and gets back to the level he was and we have new owners, we will have to make a decision again, no doubt. Hopefully it will be better communicated than the shambles we had previously.

Maybe some United fans have a moral compass.
(Note - I don't actually like Rachel Riley because she is a massive hypocrite and supporters of Boris Johnson. That shouldn't take away from the wider point about Greenwood)

(Also worth pointing out that people regularly speak about Alonso's crimes.)

Maybe other fans would happily sell their soul for a bit of success

Maybe a worrying number of United fans losing any sense of decency because we're desperate for success is a sad representation of modern society.

Whatever, this whole saga has been proper grim.

A well balanced post.
I have gone on record and been lambasted for my views.
So all I am going to say is that I wish Mason Green and his family well in Spain. I have been to Getafe on a number of occasions and it is ok.

He won't play for this club again. Not a hope in hell. Doubt he'll ever play in this country again. Even if he is banging in 30 goals a season.
I think it gets harder for people to object. If he plays for Getafe with no issues and then say Everton want to buy him what will people say? If people haven’t been up in arms about him playing for a Spanish team, will the narrative be that it’s fine for those “foreigners” to play him but not for a good solid English club?

Will he play Real today? An unfit Greenwood is probably better than what they got.

The only way I can see him returning to play for United will be if he and his missus/alleged victim put some kind of tell all explanation out in an attempt to difuse hostility. Although I'm not sure that'd be possible given potential legal ramifications.

I'm relieved he gets a chance to play and Spain is not far away from home, so that should be fine.

I was getting uneasy as I didn't think he could handle losing his career at this young age. I hope he sorts himself out, works hard and also gets some therapy. I would have stipulated that he undergoes therapy if I were one of the suits at United. It's important he recognises that he needs to change.

Let's see what happens.

We never said his contract was being terminated, it was a very vague statement really. Either the club are going to stand by their words and he won't play for us again, in which case we will probably try to cash in next summer. Or they're playing the supporters for fools and will hope it blows over and try to sneak him back in. But they'll face an even bigger shit storm if they do.
United have never said that Greenwood would never play for us again.

In fact, Laurie Whitwell said that club refused to confirm or deny if Greenwood would ever play for United again.

The language used by the club around Greenwood playing for United again has been 'no expectation' of him returning. Which leaves the door ajar.

Why wouldn't the club clearly and unequivocally rule out Greenwood playing for United again? Because they don't want to.

While it may turn out to be for the best, like every other decision the Glazers have made over the last 18 years it has all been reactive rather than proactive. There was no strategy behind leaving it late, it's because they were just trying to kick the can as far down the road as possible.

Our statement certainly isn’t a slamming of the door shut behind him, it’ll be interesting how things are around this in a years time. I really thought we’d release him, so to see it be only a years loan has surprised me.

Like I said I’m not fussed about what happens to him and I don’t even mean it from the fans point of view, It’s more the media deciding where he can and can’t play

Partey was clearly guilty and that’s been swept under the carpet, it’s tue media witch hunt that finished Greenwood (and the fact his crimes have video evidence to be fair)

I just find it crazy that he can go to Getafe and it’s barely mentioned, he’s either blacklisted or he’s not

I was looking back at his performance thread from the last couple of games he played. Plenty of comments along the lines of lazy, always looks knackered, selfish, worst workrate in the team, needs dropping, poor for a while, attitude problem etc.

I know those threads aren't the best way to judge a player but it's a reminder that it was no guarantee he was going to go on and fulfil his potential. Recent articles suggest he wasn't great at dealing with the pressure that came with playing at the highest level either. It's been a long time since then, you'd hope that with everything that's happened he'll be a lot more mature now, but it'll be interesting to see how or if he develops as a player.

The statement was an obvious attempt to kick the can down the road to me. Said it at the time. Nothing about it was definitive.

one of my mates said they should have reintegrated him as soon as the charges were dropped, and I kind of agree with that, this whole “internal investigation” just gave it more weight and the longer it dragged on the more news outlets etc made a bigger story out of it and it then made any decision harder, far too much dithering again

Why do you put "men" in quote marks?

Greenwood is a fully grown man, not a "boy", you realise?
I think he means that anyone hoping he and his family can make a happy life must be “men” that enjoy blokes beating up their partners.

He going with the idea that anyone hoping he and his family can be happy and he can do well by them, must be “men” who would do an about turn and would want him & the fam to have a hellish life if he turns out to be a bit shit at football after his 2 year hiatus.

Absolutely no chance that would ever have happened. The charges weren't just cleanly dropped, this is the issue, there was a lot going on around it that leaves a hell of a lot of doubt. On some levels it would have been better going to court and having it all laid out, but then that causes other obvious issues.

This club is full of PR shit. If the board wants to keep him and tell half the fans to feck off, just come out and say it.
