I know he's been the butt of the joke for some but behind it all there's someone who's career has been ruined by injuries. The mental frustration must be tough for him. I hope he can go on to do something that he enjoys.

Jones has been treated horribly. Might not even be injured. I think under van gala for a few games him and rojo partnered each other they were brilliant. As soon as one the “fancied” ones came back they were dropped. Remember his comeback last season vs wolves. He was best player on the pitch, dropped the following week. Remember the 4-0 vs lpool who was the scapegoat and it was clearly not his fault him. Yet he is watching a man make a mistake every time he ties his shoelaces get rewarded and get made captain of the club he loves and won a title with. He has every right to sit and take his money. Might not be the most talented player in the world but he would die for United fact.

Pack it in. I'm on to you. Berbasloth4 = Philjones4 if you play it backwards on a record player at 33 rpm.

Hahahah def not I’m Irish and we speak quicker than that but sometimes backwards.

he did get major lucky when we sold Johnny evans (fit would be third behind varane and Martinez) who was the best of him and smalling and again lucky when smalling went and h4 didnt.
But he actually cares not many others don’t.

listen to the stories about him playing for the reserves and helping the youth

NOt sure how to feel about this. The club needs the best personal available at every point of process, and u18 will be crucial. Hopefully he got it because theres some hope that he'll be good at it, and not because of his history...

Yeah, it seems that some ex players are getting some roles based on nothing but being ex players. I hope I am wrong, but considering how fecked and wrong is everything at the club, I wouldn't bet against it.

I am not really sure how someone who is not able to train is supposed to be good coach, except if it isn't teacher type tutoring or something like that, but what do I know, I am just guessing.

Old boys club back at it again, this club just isn’t serious anymore.

I'm sure there’s 100’s of coaches who would be more qualified to train the under 18’s but no let’s employ an ex player.

We’ve always employed ex-players, as do all clubs.

Anymore? When was the last time you felt that the people in charge of this club where on top of things?

Ex players. Those that can, coach.

Those that aren't so bright work for the media like Chris Sutton.

Would you rather have a coach that played previously for Liverpool or City?

This happens at all clubs, no problem with it. For all we know he might have been helping out unofficially anyway whilst he was still on the playing staff.

Hope he finds this is something he enjoys and can make a successful career out of it whether that's here or elsewhere.

Good for him. I personally don't have an issue with Jones or other ex players getting coaching opportunities at previous clubs. Sure many players have earned a lot of money, but life after professional football, especially given the age, isn't easy for some and having a way to explore a coaching career is only a positive thing.

do people really have a problem with this? Pretty sure there are much bigger things to worry about for United. At the U18 level having literally any pro with his amount of experience is fine with me. I highly doubt he is running the show out there but he has been around the top level for enough of a time to help out with development of the defenders

I suspect it's a good move. Jones own career was shattered, but he kept going, he has tremendous experience of the ups and downs that he can pass on, and we should remember the fact that five different United managers kept him on, renewed his contracts etc. despite all his problems with injury and health and the moans and groans from some sections of our fans.

I don't, but I did chuckle a bit that we went through the whole farewell/goodbye thing only to see that 5 minutes later he's back at the Carrington doors saying "hello again". I know it's in a different capacity but still :D

I have a soft spot for Jones, but let’s be realistic, Woodward fecked up by offering a contract renewal and him surviving so many managers was mainly down to him being injured which made any transfer impossible.

It was suggested across social media on Tuesday afternoon that Jones had returned to coach the club's Under-18s, but the Manchester Evening News understands he's merely been back at Carrington to observe academy training.

Sources have described Jones observing academy training as an opportunity for young players 'to engage with someone who has a wealth of knowledge to pass on accumulated during his successful career'.

Kids of the present know Phil Jones as only a meme. They would hardly be interested in his wealth of knowledge, even if Phil is good at it.
