These comments from Scott make him sound like a bellend and the movie is gonna suck.

Agreed. I think at this point you just have to accept that it's a fantasy film rather than a historical drama. It's loosely based on "facts" (what Ridley Scott thinks is cool).

I'll never forget Riddles rant on the commentary for Prometheus.
"I do have a vision, I know exactly what I want...shut the feck up. This is what I want. feck it. That's it. I've got more films in this goddamn building, and three in the Library of Congress, and people are still going, 'what are you doing that for?'. It gets really annoying. Those people are usually very inexperienced or just fundamentally stupid."

Sweet Square will hurt you for this.

It’s now sitting at 68% on RT with critics so I’m guessing most audiences will hate it.

If people want to see a “accurate” long middlebrow historical movie then they should wait until Oppenheimer is out on DVD. As for now it’s time for real cinema which is about oversized hats and shooting pyramids!

Ridley Scott on historians having criticisms about ‘NAPOLEON’. “When I have issues with historians, I ask: ‘Excuse me, mate, were you there? No? Well, shut the feck up then.’”
That is about as English as you can get.
The Battle of the Bastards was a fun spectacle, but it was also very unrealistic. Though I've heard some of the same things about this film.
It was ridiculous but fun in its own way. It wasn't based on anything so they could just go nuts with it.
Sorry the latest bullshit Alien crap did it for me, he is done as a brilliant filmmaker.

Also, Ridley Scott is the only famous person I've ever asked for an autograph. He was gruff and kind of a dick at first when I approached him. We were working in the same building and he was trying to make some tea. He was like, what do you want? (said it like 'what the feck do you want' ). Then saw my Sharpie and archival quality paper, and suddenly he was all sweetness and light. Still have it!

Oh wow that’s a great story. I think I would have been far too nervous.

I agree mostly with your ranking of his latest work(Although I really like The Last Duel). The House Of Gucci is truly great for all the wrong reasons.

The Last Duel and particularly Kingdom of Heaven were definitely better than mediocre to me. The rest seems fair.

I agree with this list, but Jesus the Alien revamp was so bad, truly awful writing, acting just dire stuff. Can't believe he went ahead with some of these movies.

He made 2 of my Top 10 films. His good films are so good they should / are taught in film schools. His bad films are so shit they become lessons in how not to do things. So I guess they should teach everything he's done in film schools.

When I asked for his autograph and said it was for me, instead of I guess selling it (?), that's when he changed. Really nice guy after that! The particular film he was working on was in serious trouble (it was one of the shite ones on my list) and so I guess he needed to be reminded he was a genius filmmaker.

Not seen Last Duel, was put off by the casting. But I love Kingdom of Heaven, excellent film. I'd agree with the rest of the ranking, the majority of his films since Kingdom of Heaven have been terrible.

I think we should hit the IMAX in full Napoleon attire. Biggest hat wins. Bonus points if you rock up with an actual cannon.

You should watch Last Duel, it's actually very good. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are great in it, if you can stop yourself from only seeing Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.

I'm beginning to think I won't like this film.
I think us history geeks are going to be disappointed and will struggle to hold back the urge to argue "well ackchyually, the battle of Embabeh was 10 miles from the actual pyramids and the French line rate of fire was only 3 rounds per minute"

But hopefully we'll be satisfied with a good old action film. Minus the Josephine scenes.

This is funny to see. If you pick out his great movies he could be the GOAT. But his bad work really puts him down. When he has a movie out it’s not a must see until it’s reviewed. So inconsistent. Clearly talented.

Blade Runner is maybe my watched film of all time as I love having it on in the background. The ambience and the pacing of the film is perfect. A similar with Alien I pretty much watch it at least once a year. Plus the cultural impact of both
is incredible. Every sci fi movie or video game that came after was in some way influence by both.
When I asked for his autograph and said it was for me, instead of I guess selling it (?), that's when he changed. Really nice guy after that! I’m always so surprised when I hear how great directors have worries about their ability. Like making some of the greatest film ever doesn’t get rid of the stress.

Watched Last Duel last night.

Matt Damon really was tragically miscast. Such a shame as the film has real potential and could have been excellent with proper casting. Adam Driver for example was excellent.

If you give Ridley Scott and great script, he'll make a great movie. If you give Ridley Scott a shit script, he'll make a technically great movie that is also shit. And then he'll call you a bellend.

I think Damon was fine, the problem with that film is the 3 perspective structure sounds good in theory but it really drags in the actual film, and it just killed the pace of the film completely by the time the actual duel comes around.

This film was DOA once they cast the leads. All they had to do was walk outside and take a random sampling of people on the street and they would have gotten an earful about how you don't put them in the same movie. I personally love Matt Damon, but Affleck is terrible, and together you get the sense they are maybe lighting each other's farts between takes in remembrance of their starving artist days. Maybe that's just me.

See, that's what I want in a historical movie. I want the filmmakers to know their shit well enough that they don't commit to celluloid some half-ass easily disproved (or even roundly discredited) theory. We've evolved enough as audience members to be able to handle the truth!

I think Kubrick still pips him to the post.
Don't be surprised if William "Bill" S. Preston Esq. and Ted "Theodore" Logan turn up in a post-credits scene, thus marking the beginning of the NCU.
Somewhere in a cinema in America I hope some projectionist has the balls to splice in a Bill & Ted scene. And sad to say, those cut aways to the armies doing their thing look better than what Ridley displays in the trailer. Bill & Ted 1, Ridley 0.
