What does it say about society that people see this as a way to get rich?
People used to travel around the country selling miracle tonics that they knew either didn't work or made people's health worse. Cigarette companies have known for decades that they caused cancer. Builders merchants knew for years that asbestos eventually made your lungs drown in fluids. Some people run Taylor Swift fan sites.

There's been horrible people everywhere in the world always looking for the easiest way to make money, and to hell with anyone who gets harmed whilst they do it.

Barton is an absolute disgrace of a man. A vile misogynistic who’s acting like every other right wing prat I see online. Won’t be long before GB News employs him, I reckon. Getting support from national disgrace Laurence Fox tops it all off. They’re both mediocre celebrities trying to be the centre of attention. Two absolute twatbaskets.

They were around before current trend of female pundits being given a run on telly. Clear difference. Does Micah Richards get in ahead of Jill Scott if both up for same debut slot with no following/brand established?
But funnily enough Barton and you only give any focus to the females as being the problem.

I'd actually be surprised if GBNews touches him. What with booting Fox and his best pal that Poundland pope cretin recently.

Exactly, even they have standards. If Twitter didn’t exist, Barton’s only platform would be as the bloke down the pub.

The two male pundits preceded the current hiring strategies to be fair. It's quite foreseeable that before Micah or Keane had a "brand" and a following that the likes of Aluko or Jill Scott would get the nod ahead of them.

I didn't say she's a shit pundit because she's female. Don't make things up. I do believe she's been hired despite being a shit pundit because she's female though. Clear distinction. Please don't infer sexism. I'm actually highlighting what is a sexist policy against males.
And shit male pundits were hired literally because they're men. Your hypothetical situation doesn't have a shred of proof or evidence to suggest that would be the case.

Actually ridiculous to suggest this "policy" of hiring females is sexist towards men, in an space dominated by men.

Where do we equate the high level women's game to though? I like Nedum Onuoha as a pundit. Commonly on pods, rarely on telly, despite always giving a good insight.
Below the men's for me going by what appears to be their hiring criteria.

Nedum Onuoha played close to 200 Premier League games. If people are being hired to draw upon their playing experience when giving punditry on Premier League topics, he obviously has more relevant knowledge than someone who never did or never could through no fault of their own play in that league.

Pundits definitely are being asked to draw upon their playing experience. We know this because they don't hire people who know a lot about football and could talk well about it but never actually played or coached to do that particular job. Nor do they hire men or women who only played lower league or non-league but could speak well about the game as pundits.

That shouldn't have to be the case in my opinion, but that's what TV companies have decided should be the case. As such, if a man isn't deemed knowledgeable enough about the PL to hire him as a pundit due to not playing in that league then a woman who didn't play in that league (again due to no fault of her own) probably shouldn't be too. I see a contradiction of sorts there.

I'd be up for opening it up to literally everyone though if they made interesting points and were engaging. Give me ex-League Two men's players if they are good, give me female pundits who were never England internationals if they know their stuff - I think all female pundits currently on TV in the UK had loads of England caps. No Scottish, Welsh or NI internationals and definitely no women who were uncapped off the top of my head but I could be wrong. Don't give me Goldbridge, or DT from AFTV but if there's a fan, female or male who knows their stuff and could speak well somewhere on Youtube, give them a go on the telly too regardless of them playing or not. Punditry could do with a shake up, there's a lot of crap ones on the box.

I don't know Onuoha as a pundit, if he is good and with that experience I don't see why he shouldn't be on TV. He would seem to fit in with a lot of what they are looking for. I guess he's not quite a big enough name for them or didn't play enough times in the PL for them even though by default he played more often than a female pundit possibly could. Shouldn't stop them booking him in my opinion.

He’s trying to get himself ‘cancelled’ and monetise off the back of this. He’s seen the Andrew Tate/Tucker Carlson model, the only issue is both of them and others similar, whether we like it or not are decent speakers capable of gaining momentum from promoting a certain message to a certain niche group of people. Joey Barton is thick as pig shit, has no meaningful accomplishments to elevate himself as someone who deserves to be listened to. He’s picked the woman in football topic as he thinks it’s what will get him that ‘cancelled’ status, he himself doesn’t believe what he’s saying to the extent he’s portraying. He’s one very sad man, who doesn’t have any other business acumen to be able to make money any other way.

It's just a Twitter poll, means nothing. I don't think there is any logical reason that would prevent women from doing those jobs other than a possible contradiction of sorts that I highlighted a few posts up.

Because it's a Twitter poll I'd be tempted to vote no anyway. I can be childish like that with any online poll. There's more sad people like me who take amusement from this kind of thing than you might think!

Most of the voters and people seeing this on their feed will be like minded people who follow him and others with similar views. I’d like to think it’s not representative of the nation as a whole.

I can only presume this whole thing is a PR exercise. No such thing as bad publicity, as long as he’s in the news. Everyone in football is talking about him just as he’s launching a podcast.

I'm waiting for the moment he goes really far and has to apologise. He seems far too consumed by all of this, even by his standards

Exactly. I think the recruitment strategy is more bias towards biological sex than ability.
How many female pundits even is there in men's football at the moment? Certainly not enough that they're getting in the way of these decent pundits getting jobs, like you claim.

The bigger issue for these pundits is every station going for people like Richards, Redknapp or Jenas who offer absolutely nothing in terms of insight or punditry. Richards is on BBC, Sky and an American station. Jenas is on BBC and BT.

Its the overuse of these that pundits that can't get a gig should be feeling aggrieved about.

Can argue about which pundits you do and don't like, but Joey Barton is a cnut and if he's inspired you to open your mouth in agreement, you are too. End of.

It’s actually quite scary how many people do support his views though. I suppose social media gives people the anonymity to spout any view they like without any real backlash.

Just delete the thread. Even this comment gives the throbber too much air.

Discussing his insanity does nothing good.
Obvs ignoring this thread now. But we really don’t need to have one. Just have a unified grifters thread.

Nearly got myself in a bit of bother. I was explaining to my gf what Barton had initially said about the comparison to Rose West, however I said Sienna West. She responded 'Don't you mean Rose, who's Sienna?' It then dawned on me I was referring to the porn star.
She doesn't let you watch porn? Sorry mate.

It's hilarious anyone is trying to argue that point. I honestly can't get my head around it. It's a spectacularly bad take.

I'm inclined to think the people who would vote on it are the people who follow him, who you would guess are more likely to hold similar views to him. I would not have seen the poll were it not for this thread and I'm not interested in giving his profile more interactions by opening twitter and voting in it

Agreed - I didn't say it was the biggest issue, just a conversation to be has about it. Those mentioned were also established before the current trends of hiring female pundits so not surprising they are still around.

I think the thread should read wannabe sitting along Gary and the boys. He’s obviously butthurt he didn’t get a role in punditry and calling the female pundits knowing it’ll cause a reaction makes him revelant . Granted Some of the female pundits are rubbish we’ve listened to worse male pundits for the last 10 years.
He just needs to be ignored he’ll be forgotten about soon enough hopefully .

Barton is useful, in that he's a bit like a lighthouse or one of those lit up buoys they use to guide ships. If you find your opinions getting too close to his you know its time to change direction and go back the other way.

I'm not sure what point you're making or what you intended this article to support but it's actually very interesting reading, the article itself shows the numbers reflect an almost non existent space for female commentators 5 years ago and that while the broadcasters are now embracing female commentators/pundits the % increase is also a reflection of more games being broadcast (particularly during lockdown) and more platforms broadcasting games. Screen time is rising significantly for both male and female commentators/pundits and there is still a noticeable disparity as highlighted on the full text you quoted "The number of females covering men’s games in either commentator or pundit capacity grew by 5650% from 2016/17 to 2020/21 (a mere 12 appearances to 690). In comparison, last season saw 2500 male commentators and pundits appear in all televised men’s games, a difference of 1810."
