It was one of the most blatant penalties you'll ever see. A mark against VAR. Wolves have had it rough this season.
We've gotten away with a few penalties this season.
Lisandro could easily have given away one for what he did to Romero vs Spurs. Although we should have also gotten one for a handball by Romero in the same game. Maguire got away with a clear shove on McAtee vs Sheffield Utd.
There's a lot going on in that incident, but the first foul is clearly on AWB who can't jump because he's being held down.
In real time, it looks bad. But the Wolves defenders essentially collide with each other and that is what results in the ball spooning up in the air. After that, Onana cleans out one of the Wolves players. So there is fault on both sides, consistent with any 50/50.
But the first offence is the foul on Wan-Bissaka, so it renders the whole debate as to who was more at fault irrelevant.
Even in the Wolves game itself we had a stonewall penalty denied when a Wolves defender saved a Rashford's goalbound header. That was a much more obvious penalty, especially as it was probably going in.
The general narrative that we see is that the media make a huge song and dance about any decision that goes our way, but fall silent about those where we don't have the rub of the green. How is the Semedo handball any less controversial than the Onana incident? That was a goalbound effort, conveniently just so happening to hit a defender's arm. Ultimately, the narrative about Onana getting away scot free works better for them than the random Wolves player.
