The RedCafe Boxing Thread

Surprised to see Jake is the overwhelming favourite with the bookmakers.

I mean Mike is 58 years old... he was shot to pieces 20 years ago and getting KO'd by domestic level HWs then.

Jake Paul has bang average (if that) technical skills but is a pretty good athlete, can do 10 x 3s at a decent pace and clearly has decent power.

That's enough to put a beating on a pensioner I'm afraid. I went back and watched a few highlights of Mike's exhibition with RJJ and the speed, reactions, balance, fluidity just isn't there anymore. And that was 4 years ago and he's had well documented health problems since.

The fact this is a 'pro' bout (I use that lightly consider it's 8 x 2s and 14oz gloves) is disgusting. I'm hoping the short rounds and pillow gloves will protect Mike, but I can see him getting badly hurt in this unfortunately.

I think the one upside for Tyson is the $15.7m he’ll make from this farce. For relevance, he could’ve been JP’s sparring partner or trainer, without having to resort to this shambles of a bout. The worst part is that if Paul wins, he’ll be able to go around saying he beat “the baddest man on the planet” and one of the greatest, most feared heavyweights of all time. Giving further credibility to his claim of being a legit boxing phenomenon. That’s what the Tyson name carries. No mind that Tyson is a nearly 60 year old man, with years of drink and drug abuse, and depression behind him. A man that has no business getting in a ring with a 27 year old, even semi-pro boxer.

If you put Paul in the ring with even the most mediocre of current professional heavyweights - say anyone in the top 30 - he’d get pulverised to the point where I would fear for his long term health. But tonight he’s going to fight a name (and a name only) that will add respect to his resume, and help extend this charade. No matter that his opponent is only a handful of years away from qualifying for his senior citizen card. That said, I am sure that if, even at 58, Tyson lands his trademark duck, weave, right to the body, right uppercut combo, then its lights out for Paul. I’d also bet my left nut that’ll never be thrown, let alone landed, at anything close to full power.

This entire thing is grotesque. There are no winners from this, only losers. It’s shambolic, laughable and denigrating to the sport of boxing. It’s more than likely to be choreographed and staged, than a true bout, and everything from the moment they announced it, to the moment this whole circus is over is a shame upon the sport.

Yes, I’ll be watching.

I don't know maybe its copium on my end but I think Jake is underestimating the hate he will get if he is stood over a knocked out nearly 60 year old Tyson. This won't be internet hate either that he already gets but something way past that. I don't think it'll turn in to the sort of thing like with Floyd just to tune in to watch him lose either. I'm obviously not comparing Jake fecking Paul to Larry Holmes but fight fans never forgave him for beating an old Ali, he got generational hate for that. When you beat an icon that people love to a pulp he's taken clown show too far, pro and ex fighters will be out for blood. Maybe Im being naive because its what I want to happen but we'll see.

You ARE being naive.

Tyson would gladly lay down for Paul to gloat over if he's paid enough, and people will love it. This is nothing but a pantomime. Trying to pretend it's an actual real contest is the same thing as people watching WWE and still wanting to believe it's not Eastenders in spandex.

Of course Jake Paul is the favourite, there's no question. I hope somehow Mike rolls back the years for just 1 round as that's all it would take, however folks, the guy is almost 60. It's very unlikely

Every Paul fight is exactly the same. Hype, buzz, underwhelming fight, draw or Paul win.

No idea why the boxing thread is still in the sports part of the forum, it should barely be in the entertainment section.

The draw at 10-1 is very tempting, seeing as the whole thing is fixed.
I backed a draw at 10/1 a few hours ago. Clearly a lot of people are thinking the same thing as the odds have dropped to 8/1 now. Wouldn't surprise me if they go even lower in the next few hours.

There's a great fight tonight between two boxing all-timers. Unfortunately that's not the one people are talking about.

Netflix aren’t having a good night so far in terms of production. Some nightmares so far for the on screen folks

my 12 year old nephew told me he's staying up to watch it on the off chance jake paul gets knocked the feck out

so I'm staying up too now

I don't know why I'm staying up for this, but i hope Mike knocks Jake out, then my brain reminds me that this is a 58 year old vs a 27 year old, and the whole thing is completely stupid. P.S Jutta Leerdam is hot as F....

Asks the question then answers it

Can't help myself, Mike is a legend, I remember staying up as a kid just to watch him win in one round in the early 90's.
Anyway at least this joke of a event will put me in a good sleep wake routine for the UFC tomorrow.
