Federer/Safin at the australia open 05 was higher quality tennis with just as much drama.

Today was a classic, just had one too many feck ups.

this was played at the highest level with some errors but both players had much more winners then unforced errors. The quality of the striking and the angles of winning shot have not been seen at this stadium ever.

It'll be the toss of a coin. Another 5 setter.
Don't write off Djokovic, theres also wildcards like Tsonga who could spring a surprise perhaps..he did thrash Nadal in Australia after all.

Too many unforced errors by Federer, seen many better than this match. Remember atleast 3 Sampras-Agassi matches which had higher quality of tennis.

Nadal deserved it fully. Federer was playing at his best in the fifth set, that return at 40-30 in final games was unbelievable.

What that boiled down to was that Federer just could not break Nadal's serve. The Spaniard was a rock, and despite having to resort to second serves in some really important games, Federer still couldn't break him.

Well done Nadal. I don't like him, but I can see he played the better game tonight. Some of his backhand winners were out of this world.

Gutted for Federer. So close to one of the great sporting comebacks. Such a model professional too. Once again i come away feeling he could/should have beaten Nadal. Really hope he gets back to his best soon. Its been awhile since hes been. Would be nothing like it if he dominates Nadal and Djokovic the next few years.

Incredible match...

If it wasn't for that freak result against Tsonga in the Aussie semis we could be looking at the Grand Slam for Nadal.

Federer was playing at his best in the fifth? Which game were you watching? Have u seen Federer at his best? He made a lot of errors to lose the match in the end.

I saw that game. And i think this was better.

Sampras-Agassi had some belters it has to be said, it would be interesting to see the stats that back up this arguement.

Many better than this?

Of the top of my head, I can only think of the US Open final with Sampras and Agassi. And the Safin- Federer semi in '05.

Look i know u and i dont agree on much and as much as i want to support the american players neither pete or andre could have got to the shots that nadal did and then create winners from those positions. Yes there were errors and possibly roger could have won this with steadier play early on, but from the 3rd set on this was the highest quality tennis played on this surface.

When a 3 time champion who has been involved in the greatest match ever according to everyone says its the greatest he has ever seen well i think that speaks volumes!

He could not show the same form as he does against others like Roddick because he was up against Nadal. This is like asking why United don't play as well against Chelsea as they do against Newcastle.

What a fecking BRILLIANT game!

I wanted Roger to win, but fair play to Rafa.

Both were immense. I honestly thought Roger was going to take the fifth but as somebody has said, Nadal could not be broken.

Roger will come back though, he'll win the Olympics and US, and do a clean sweep next year :D

Excellent, excellent match

Desailly is a God.
Anyone who says tennis is shit to watch needs to be strapped to a chair and watch this match.

Better than Safin - Federer 05 IMO given that it was a final. Unbelievable.
