I have literally just finished reading the book - fantastic, and I got home from work at 11.20pm last night and the TV series is being repeated on BBC2. I never saw it the first time round and had planned on buying the box set so that's gonna save me the guts of £30.

If the first episode is anything to go by I'm going to really enjoy it. It might take a while to get used to seeing "Ross from Friends" as an army Lieutenant though!

Anyone seen it before?

Band of Brothers is the best thing ever made to be shown on a television. I`ve probably seen it fifteen times and I don`t get bored with it.

New series will be called Pacific I think.

I haven`t read the book, but I assure you you will absolutely love the series.

Got the box set as well, the best thing ever. Got even my wife to watch it all, she got addicted to it and she hates 'war movies'.

Remember that prick lieutenant Dike: "I got to call the regiment" (looks at the watch, yawning).

The book was great. Not watched the series, but my flatmate has the boxset, so I might watch it after seeing the good reviews on here.

No, he tells Lipton that he let the rumors spread cos it makes him sound like a badass so people respect him, but didnt confirm or deny it.

Stories from Easy veterans suggest the shootings (of prisoners) did take place, including Richard Winters stating that Speirs suggested the rumors were true but never gave any details. However, if the shooting of the prisoners actually took place, its exact location cannot be conclusively determined. Donald Malarkey claimed he heard a Tommy gun firing near the location of the prisoners on D-Day but did not actually see anything. Winters originally heard that the incident took place at Bastogne. Carwood Lipton claimed he heard it occurred in Carentan. Speirs never discussed the rumors publicly.

Richard Winters, in his own book entitled Beyond Band of Brothers: The Memoirs of Major Richard Winters, detailed exactly what did happen when Speirs shot a sergeant in one of his squads for disobeying a direct order in combat. Winters notes that by shooting the sergeant, Speirs saved the lives of many other men. Winters also repeatedly calls Speirs "a born killer” and states that despite making occasional flawed decisions off the battlefield, Speirs was a superb combat commander, which Winters respected immensely. Winters also points out that Speirs did report this incident to his commanding officer and names the officer. However, that officer was killed in action the next day, and the incident was never pursued at any level. Winters suggests that officers higher in the chain of command were so desperate for competent field officers that they could not afford losing one of Speirs' caliber. The soldiers serving under Speirs respected him immensely, but also feared him. This incident eventually faded away officially but became legend among the troops.

I've just found the boxset on Amazon for £14.97. You couldn't beat that with a big stick!

I delete my own threads when I'm tired.
Best series ever. Watched all the DVDs in about 3 days, and read the book in about the same. Seriously couldn't tear myself away from both.

I do also think that 'Ross from friends' is really, really good in it too. The whole thing is very well casted.

Aye, Schwimmer plays his role very well. It was a bit weird at first, getting used to him not being Ross, but he does the role perfectly. Loads of British actors on this show in fact. Several of the Americans are in fact Brits, Serg. Martin being one of them if I remember correctly.

Think the filming was in Britain which explains why there are so many British cameos. Simon Pegg is in the first episode.

Not least being Winters of course.

Watch the extras DVD. Some good stuff on boot camp.

Incredible show, what HBO makes kicks the shit in to everything else, between that, The Sopranos, Rome, The Wire .... they're so far ahead of anything else, and Band of Brothers tops the list.

Like someone said, the concentration camp episode is one of the most amazing and thought provoking pieces of television ever.
