He's been OK for me, averaging at around 7 for the last two seasons.

He's got a tendency to make some fecking horrible errors though - about 5 times now he's run right out and had the ball taken off him/was beaten to it by my opponents, and they went on to score.
Wow i've had immense luck with Akinfeev then, he was shortlisted for World Player of the Year in my 4th season with him, averaged a 7.54 with a young and re-building defensive unit he faced plenty of shots.

Any good English keepers develop to be great I can keep tabs on in the lower leagues or is 09 just like every other game?

I'm managing England and it's been a revolving door at GK, my main problem being Ben Foster was transfered to Valencia and has had 12 starts in 2 seasons

Green > James > Robinson > Green > Kirkland > Almunia > Carson > Green > Almunia > Carson

That is the order right now, the almunia turning English thing was fantastic short-term (Had a cracking WC), but then he was hurt, and when he came back he was second choice for Arsenal so now im back to Mr.West Brom, the only English keeper with a decent record... 6.88

Joe Hart is third choice at City for feck sakes

I've just realised Jean Pierre Papin is in the game
Ah, brings back memories of CM01/02. Once started a game named Jean Pierre Papin at Fulham. Signed this French striker Kaba Diawara as free transfer. Coming on as a sub, hit 4 on his debut at Old Trafford. Don't remember the reasons why I quite that game, though.

Hrm well come to think of it I've won the League twice since he joined, in this two seasons. He hasn't had to make a ridiculous amount of saves per game which may explain it.

So anyway, I'm looking to start a new game. At first I was going to choose Hoffenheim (and I still might), but I feel it would probably be a bit too easy to begin with.

Zaragoza are in heavy consideration. But I think I'd like to start with a British side in the Championship. Any suggestions as to good young British players that I should consider signing?

Diego Calderon will be a gimme at LB/WB in every game I play from here.

Good luck with managing those 20 strikers.

Anyway, I'm starting a game with QPR. Can people suggest me some good young players to sign.

Already signed - Mattock, Santon (wanted Borbon, but can't fecking get the Permit), Bartley, that Crystal Palace guy, some Irish Midfielder from Hamilton and some young Midfielder from Watford.

Fratton Park, play up Pompey!
Boothy i'm disappointed.

Oh yeah Worcester update, after buying Gary Woods (ex-United) to solve my keeping problems i also bought two new fullbacks and am currently doing pretty damn well. 2nd in the league after 10 games, sadly i don't see it lasting.

Yeah, I've got too many strikers, I'm going to sell heskey on.

Macheda
Welbeck
Manucho
Heskey
Owen
Berbatov
Aguero
Rooney

:(

Aguero can play in an attacking midfielder position, but doesnt play as well

I got fecked off with this game after my League loss to Barcelona, which was an absolute complete and utter farce. Sold all my team over the age of about 28, and promoted shit loads of youngsters whom I have high hopes for (including the next Pep Guardiola and Emile M'Penza who have been playing it out in my youth team for a few years). Ended up with about 200mil transfer budget and then spent about 150mil on every player under the age of 17 that my scouts found and rated, to replace the youth players I just promoted to my first team. Some clubs were asking like 17-18mil for highly rated 16-17 year olds! Luckily by now I didn't care, and I didn't want to buy any current world class players so I just paid it.

Can't be arsed to start the season though, losing the title like that was a pretty bitter blow.

Started a new game with Barca, sent Bojan out on loan which left me short on strikers even with Ibra. So I sent a trial invite to dear old Dwight Yorke who I signed despite the coach reports telling me he is shit, he just repayed me with a 2 goal debut against Espanyol

And I'm all out of bubblegum.
Are they actually any good a few years in?
There's no way that Macheda or Manucho should have anything to do in the United squad in FM09. Welbeck.. well, he's -9, so if you're lucky he could have a potential ability as high as 180, which with the right coaching would make him a top Premier League striker.

Edit: Oh, and I'm having a blast with all the failed prospects in my United game. I know I keep going on about how there's no such thing as a sure bet in FM09 (except the ones you know have high potential, either from cheating or from them not being regens), no matter what your coaches say. At least this game I've never spent big really money on a "promising" youngster, though I did spend £8 million on a 20 year old Irish international defender, who was supposed to be able to be as good as Rio, but never got near. I've got a few I think will properly make the high grades, but I've had quite a few "can be as good as Ronaldo/Aguero/Rooney/Adler/Ferdinand/Veloso/Evra/Srna" in this game, who turned out merely average.

Sadly, Santon was one. I haven't actually checked, but I suspect he's on a -9. Which means that in my long-term game he was in the higher spectrum (170-180 potential can go a very long way for a full back, or even a winger). He wasn't in this game. From the start the scouts agreed that he was going to be brilliant, and the assistant manager was along with it for quite a few years. Then suddenly, nah, he's just going to be "almost" as good, at best. Just off-loaded him to Aston Villa for £5 million (still a profit), with a clause to buy him back for £10 million just in case they're wrong the other way (has happened), and he turns out a superstar after all.

Oh, and at the ripe old age of 27, I finally converted Ronaldo to a striker, even with the strike force I already had. It took about 3 games playing as a striker and with striking positional training before he had "Accomplished".

Santon's been excellent for my Genoa game. He's currently my Vice Captain, in the national squad (as a starter at RM) and had an average rating over over 7 in each of the three seasons I've played. His potential rating is still top stars, and he's definitely got a lot of development left in him.

I play him in the Wing Back position (in a 2-3-2-1-2), which enables me to use both his good attacking and defending skills.

I just bought him for my QPR game as I couldn't get a permit for Borbon and don't know if there's any other good young British RWB's, maybe he didn't develop for you as he'd moved abroad. Did he actually start for you, or was he just coming off from the bench?

Also one thing I noticed is some players develop quicker than others. For example I bought Saivet during the first mid-year window, his starts were average at best and I only played him off the bench/in cup games.

The next season (mid-year window) I jumped on Balotelli. He only scored half a dozen goals, in all comps, for the remainder of that season (playing him as much as I could as my 3rd striker). Having sold my first choice striker (Lavezzi) I promoted Balotelli to a regular starter for the next season (alongside Marquinhos), and he won Italian Player of the Year, developing rapidy (attacking stats were all 15 when I signed him, now they're 17/18).

Meanwhile Saivet's stats have been improving from 13/14's to 15/16's. He was promoted to my third striker, getting his fair share of gametime on/off the bench. I found he only ever scored incredible goals, and lost the ball frequently when a defender challenged him for it. He was rather inconsistent so far, whilst Balotelli's been reliable (not as much as Marquinhos, who's scored more than a goal a game) throughout the season. So I take it Saivet's definitely a slower developer that say the likes of Marquinhos, Santon and Balotelli (all of which have been extremely consistent at such a young age).

heh, Arsenal were ahead of me in the league with about 6 games to go. One of my regens (Tomas Svrcek) - who had had a pretty normal, uninspiring year - suddenly chose this moment to go on a truly crazy scoring spree, getting no less than 13 goals in 6 games, and this is from a central midfielder.

Rooney had been out injured, so i changed my usual 4-2-3-1 to a 4-3-3 with Svrcek joining the midfielders (alongside Veloso and De Rossi) and he did brilliantly. Those late performances eventually leading him on to be voted Players' Young Player of the Year, which he said he couldnt have achieved without his manager, bless him.

Sad thing is, I still need to get rid of him I think. He is only 20 but he seems to have peaked already stat-wise on a CA of about 155.
