According to various sources in Belgium, 18 year old Belgian fullback Marnick Vermijl, has signed for Manchester United on a 3 year deal. His current club is Standard de Liège.

I couldn't find any english sources so I'll post the belgian link:

Belgiumsoccer.be - 18-jarige Belg tekent bij Manchester United

I've never heard of him to be honest, but according to the newspapers there were several english topclubs interested in signing the kid.

Cheers, Cristiano. Be sure to post additional info if and when you get it. Is he a youth international?

The thread about this in the newbies mentions him being banned from attending Liege training sessions, when it came out he was in negotiations with United. Sounds like we might have done another "Pogba" and nicked someone before he had signed professional terms.

It's written in this article as-well
Marnick Vermijl (photo) plays the next three seasons for Manchester United. The young Limburger played earlier this season for the promises of Standard.
The 18-year outside defender, who both left and right from the feet can, started his career at Racing Peer Bocholt VV and then went over to Standard. Vermijl was eleven times this season followed by scouts of the English club. This led to good comments. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Sir Alex Ferguson finally gave the key after watching some DVDs.
The young defender signed an exclusive contract with Manchester provisional and may not give interviews about his transfer. When Standard learned of the negotiations between United and Vermijl he had joined the then technical director Dominique D'Onofrio reported. Standard banned the player for even longer in the group training sessions.
Vermijl will earn 300,000 euros in three years. Manchester United also pay 220,000 euros compensation to his former training clubs. The defender may next season with the first team of United, among all the big boys, preparing for the new season experience. Vermijl played this season for the first time a team of Standard, in the friendly against Vise.

I don't mean to alarm anyone, but I just checked Football Manager, and he doesn't exist.

Does anyone know if Fergie plays with a large database, as that might explain it.

He's using a custom database.

ij is pronounced as ei (like somwhere between rate and rite)

so the last part of his name were it to be spelled Vermil would be pronounced as ver-mill, but because of the j it is pronounced differently with that special "ei" sound.

United sign Marnick Vermijl

According to Belgian and Dutch media, United have signed this 18 year old kid (or are very close to do so).

He's a Belgian full back coming from the Standard Liege's youth academy. He can play both on the right and on the left.
A fee of 220k euros has been paid to Standard.

To be honest, I had never heard of him, so I have no idea about his talent.

This bloke Marnick is probably the sweetner for the Steven Defour deal in the summer so that Steven has some company when he gets here!! ;) Just like Tosic was for the Ljajic signing!

The 'mijl' in his name is pronounced pretty much the same way as the English 'mail'.

Why do we keep buying full backs?
Good question indeed. Maybe Fergie is not fully convinced by fabio & Rafael?

or its just an investment i.e. buy promising players at low price, train them and sell them at a higher price, if they do not make it at OT...

If he is decent at left back then Evra can look forward to some much needed games off next season. Fabio should be quality next season too but seems to be injury prone! Maybe Fergie is worried about this or that he might be lightweight.
Now all we need is Lukaku and Defour in the summer! Not sure if Defour would be strong enough to cut it in the PL though!
