Best band out of manchester by a country mile IMHO.
Pretty much changes depending on the mood I am in.The Headmaster Ritual
Paint a Vulgar Picture
Bigmouth
Cemetery Gates
Stop Me If You Think....etc
Gaffs is right, a top 5 is just silly, mine would change after a week and then change again after another. Vicar in a tutu, Rusholme Ruffians, What difference does it make, hand in glove, there is a light, Ask, Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me, How soon is now, I started something I couldn't finish, The boy with the thorn in his side...I could go on for days
Ooh you swine gaffs. Impossible to choose a favourite, but I'll ponder on some belters and return.Another question. Best Smiths lyric?
"Keates and Yeats are on your side, while Wilde is on mine"Another question. Best Smiths lyric?
I disagree man. When you consider The Smiths as a collective each element was fantastic.I've always felt it was Marr who was the real talent.
Got to disagree there, Morrissey and Marr is one of the classic song writing partnerships.I've always felt it was Marr who was the real talent.
Agreed.Got to disagree there, Morrissey and Marr is one of the classic song writing partnerships.
Marr was very important, absolutely, but for me The Smiths genius is in large part due to Morrissey's lyrics and vocal delivery.
Both essensial parts to The Smiths success and continued popularity.Got to disagree there, Morrissey and Marr is one of the classic song writing partnerships.

Only just picked up on this thread. I was at school in the early/mid 80s when The Smiths were in their heyday and I must admit, it wasn't until the tail end of their time that I actually got into them a bit (Sheila Take A Bow was the song). If you must write prose and poems
The words you use should be your own
Don't plagiarise or take "on loan"
There's always someone, somewhere
With a big nose, who knows
And who trips you up and laughs
When you fall
The passing of time and all of its sickening crimes is making me sad again.
My favourite Smiths song by far. Every single nuance is wonderful.Rubber Ring has been my favourite Smiths song for years and years.
It deserves all the lyrics
A sad fact widely known
The most impassionate song
To a lonely soul
Is so easily outgrown
But don't forget the songs
That made you smile
And the songs that made you cry
When you lay in awe
On the bedroom floor
And said : "Oh, oh, smother me Mother..."
No...
Rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring
La...
The passing of time
And all of its crimes
Is making me sad again
The passing of time
And all of its sickening crimes
Is making me sad again
But don't forget the songs
That made you cry
And the songs that saved your life
Yes, you're older now
And you're a clever swine
But they were the only ones who ever stood by you
The passing of time leaves empty lives
Waiting to be filled (the passing...)
The passing of time
Leaves empty lives
Waiting to be filled
I'm here with the cause
I'm holding the torch
In the corner of your room
Can you hear me?
And when you're dancing and laughing
And finally living
Hear my voice in your head
And think of me kindly
No ...
Rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring
La...
No...
Rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring
Do you
Love me like you used to?
Oh...
Rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring, rubber ring
La...
You're clever
Everybody's clever nowadays
You're clever
Everybody's clever nowadays
You are sleeping
You do not want to believe
You are sleeping
You do not want to believe
You are sleeping
You do not want to believe
You are sleeping

Correct mate B side with wonderful woman, another fecking top tune may I had.Jeane is a great shout. On the back of This Charming Man innit?
I love the Sandy Shaw one too, with Moz on backing vocals.
Straight back at you.Careful beacon, I might have to love you.
Headmaster Ritual and Barbarism Begins At Home are certainly two of my favourites, but one and two are reserved for This Charming Man and What Difference Does It Make for me. Johnny Marr really is one of my favourite guitarists.GREAT BAND. Lacked a certain warmth to be one of my absolute favourites though. Mainly because of Morrissey; great lyricist, great front-man, but I struggle to bond with his personality on record.
Headmaster Ritual might be my favourite. Or Barbarism Begins at Home. Or Suffer Little Children. feck. They were a great band.
gtfoi've never understood the smiths, i think they are pretty good but joy division were always the superior manc band imo
I believe there is room in the world for both. Joy Division have certainly written some of the most beautiful music ever created. If I had to chose it would be The Smiths, but I'd rather not have to.I've never understood the smiths, I think they are pretty good but joy division were always the superior manc band IMO
