Am very glad to hear we've at least commented about this in a very strong manner and not just taken it on the chin.
However, words will be meaningless unless we now follow up every Mason game where a player is seen swearing and ask why the player wasn't sent off or at least why the FA didn't look into it.

I've just watched Ian Watmore giving evidence at the football governance select committee, and he mentioned that David Gill had argued, and that he broadly agreed, that disciplinary decisions (deciding on punishments, etc) should be taken away from the FA, altogether, and that the responsibility should instead lie with a specific body that is unquestionable in terms of its independence and authority.
Surprisingly, he also appeared to suggest that the management of the laws of the game is not currently under the jurisdiction of the FA, which I took to mean that a seperate regulatory body actually creates and manages the laws in the first place. In both David Gill and Ian Watmore's opinion the current arrangement is exactly the wrong way around, i.e. the FA should manage the laws, but a seperate, wholly independent body should be in charge of the actual disciplinary process.
Watmore then went on to say that he felt that he couldn't make the necessary change because of the current structure of the FA board, which contains three representatives from the Premier League and two from the Football League. In other words, if the management of the laws of the game was currently brought back inside the FA it would create a conflict of interest, because certain board members would be inclined to argue for laws which may be in the interests of the clubs, but not in the interests of either the FA or the game as a whole.
If anyone gets a chance to see Watmore giving evidence I would highly recommend it. He actually confirmed many of the things, as a former, though short lived chief executive of the FA, that have long been suspected about how its current structure is prohibitive in terms of change and progress, and he also argued that it will never be restructured unless it is forced to by external pressure.

So it's day 6 now since the event and Sky Sports news continue to show the clip of Rooney (albeit the 'feck' bits cut) shouting into the camera. Sky have shown the clip every day since it happened.

I don't think there's anyone who watches SSN that hasn't seen it by now. It's all a game, Sky just trying to milk the story as much as they can. Who else can they wheel out to make a comment on it now? This has got to be the most overblown story of the season.

I think every player caught swearing will give the FA another question to answer and the club should make sure that it is asked. They've mad a rod for their own back on this one the FA, they really have. Every week now they'll have to deal with why they didn't ban a player for swearing. They can't point to exceptional circumstance in Rooney's case as the rule he apparently broken doesn't accommodate any exceptional circumstance. There isn't a 'PS. this only applies when done directly into camera' clause on it. So it's going to be a big headache for the FA now. There's little doubt about that.
