van Gaal likes to entertain the supporters, so he put on a comedy show for us.

Blackett looks a bag of nerves, compared to the incredibly composed McNair on the other side. Take him off for Herrera and go to a back four. It means Young at LB, but who else could it be?

Or stay with the back 3 and take RVP off for Herrera and actually have some presence in midfield.

No idea how we haven't conceded, but we really need to pick things up in the second half. It really does look like we have a bunch of players who are scared to do anything, and don't know what they are meant to be doing out there right now. Really hope we can turn things around in the second half, because I can't see our luck holding out.

I'd seriously look at bringing RVP off, he has hardly done anything and no longer has that can create a goal out of anything feel either. Would like to see us get someone with far more mobility and movement up front.

Well that was depressing, totally devoid of any cohesion or capable of linking together 10 passes in their half, allowing them onto us with no pressure is nothing short of scandalous.

443 ditch 3 the back, it just doesn't suit us or our players.

Oh Mike Dean should be ashamed, red card all day long in the modern game.

We played for about 5min. The rest of the first half was just painful to watch. Soaking up pressure from Arsenal and a few hopeful attempts of turning the attack at them. I can't be sure if Man United or Hull City was playing.

Not sure if we can blame the injuries for everything. For instance, injuries have had nothing to do with not even being able to string 2-3 passes together. We're in an absolute mess now.

Get RVP off - Mata or Herrera (or both) need to come on.

DDG has made some excellent saves as always but he was culpable to giving the ball straight to Arsenal in our half twice.

RVP has been terrible, Carrick anonymous, the defence shaky, Valencia and Young arent very good wingbacks either.

It's not like age should reduce him from great or at least very good to rubbish in a mere 5 mounths, though. He looks completely out of it.

Well, so he did under Moyes also. And during the WC bar the first two games. He's been on the decline for a solid 1,5 years now. He plays like Jonathan Walters.

Awful half, Di Maria has had a couple of good moments and De Gea has kept us alive but other than it's shocking stuff. Fellaini and Carrick are not getting any rhythm into our game, the 3 CB's all look nervy, Shaw is injured and RvP is sitting in the invisible jet once more......oh and Rooney has spent his time man marking Arteta for feck knows what reason.

Well that was an extremely stressful first half. It got slightly better towards the end, but we really were awful for a lot of it. We seemed totally afraid to play football, and clearly have zero faith in the defence. If De Gea wasn't passed fit, we'd be losing by quite a bit now. Typical that we picked up another defensive injury with Shaw.

Furious with LVG right now. Thought he'd learnt his lesson early in the year that 3 at the back will never work in the prem.

This is absolutely suicidal football we are playing right now. Everytime they come forwards we are split apart too easily. Had it not been for DDG we would be down two goals.

The "extra" man in midfield has also done feck all for our possession or control of the game. The whole team looks so disjointed and unsure yet again.

LVG should know better than to throw two teenagers into a back 3 and expect them to play well against the likes of sanchez. Its fecking madness.
yes, I guess Jaap stam didn't read LVG's messages. Who are these other 2 experienced defenders who are available?

What the feck is this shit!? No shape at all, the players are just running around in clumps. Nervy at the back with the passing with this shite formation!!

Get Herrera on for RVP, and mata for Valencia, go 4-3-3. God I'm pissed off

We haven't had an extra man in midfield, because we've been playing a 343 instead of a 352. I don't agree that it'll never work in the prem, but it would take a lot of work getting the players to be familiar with it. That said this match is crucual, and we really can't afford to mess around with unfamiliar formations when the team isn't even playing the system properly yet.

    Arsenal aren't very good ?
That's what I thought. Some decent inter play, but we have largely given them the ball when we don't need to.

Blackett looks low on confidence, which is surprising since he looked full of confidence in his early games.

Di Maria and Fellani getting into the game a bot more which is good. Just need RVP to wake up. Young should look to take his chance, their RB is for the taking.

Personally, thought Wilshire should have gone. Was absolutely ridiculous thing to do for such a nothing free kick.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Fellaini will only work in a team looking to survive a game and that's exactly what we seem to be doing.

Only way I see us winning is through a set piece or a massive arsenal error. Van persie and rooney are non-existent whilst Valencia and Young are never going to cause any damage.

Luckily Arsenal don't have the firepower to make us look utterly stupid, but we are just about surviving.

All I've learnt from this game is that if City or Chelsea had attacked us, it would have been a cricket score... Hopefully we put things right in the second half.

Can we finally sub RVP? He is literally doing nothing this season, better sub him off for herrera..
People who are asking for Herrera, is he able to play for 45 minutes?
My understanding is that Herrera is injured, so cant play for long.
If he wasnt injured, I'm sure he'd start.

Who would your back 4 be? serious question. The only reason we're using a 3-5-2 is because our fullbacks are all injured. It'd be even worse in a 4 man defence then this.
It'd be Valencia, Smalling, Mcnair and Blackett. At least they'd know how to play in a back four rather than look completely out numbered and disorganized by a very pacy (and wide) gooner attack.

If we keep chopping and changing our tactics its only going to confuse and delay our team cohesion and understanding. Its not only the defence that looks weak, its affecting all other areas of the pitch. We just don't look like a team that knows how to switch from defence to attack properly.

Fellaini being commended in the Swedish studio for not going down, but when headbutts like that go unpunished if you stay on your feet, what's the bloody point in not throwing yourself to the ground? I'm fuming here. I wish he'd thrown himself to the ground and cried like a baby if that'd meant the correct decision had been made.

    I'm actually now quite pleased

Those first 25 mins I'm not sure I have the words to give it justice. We went out like we had no coaching or instructions...it was fecking shocking

But fair fecks they got over that and we have had a couple of chances and improved all over the pitch

Fellaini and ADM our best players apart from the keeper

Van Gaal's philosophy has been reduced to knock downs from Fellaini. Not impressed.

Injured have us in a really bad shape. Blind is really miss for this game. He was the one who start the build up from behind. Carrick is not ready for it yet, and now Shaw is big miss.

Herrera must play. I will take Fellaini out of this.

Van Persie off and bring on Mata or Herrera. Think I'd prefer Herrera as he'd get stuck in more

Red man down in London town
We've got to be happy to still be 0-0. I think we've been pretty shocking myself. We took ages to settle down and just looked wide open at the back. We've given them plenty of chances. Our star man, by far, is of course De Gea, who's kept us in it. Tactically the players don't look comfortable with this 3-5-2 and it's shown up in our style of play. We've chosen to keep hoofing the ball up field for Fellaini to win knockdowns. I thought we wouldn't resort to that except in desperate measures, so can't believe it's our main tactic today.

Most of the problems so far are of our own doing. Passing back so often is just a recipe for disaster. You'd think a 5 man midfield would retain possession better than we have. However in the rare moments we've attacked with speed, we've looked threatening. Di Maria is doing well, Rooney is underutilised and Van Persie has just been anonymous. Must improve drastically.

3 at the back just doesn't do it for me, and makes us look even more defensively vulnerable, in my opinion. I'd go to a 4141. We need two banks of four, because we're way too exposed in wide areas.

    De Gea
    Valencia - McNair - Smalling - Blackett
    Carrick
Di Maria - Fellaini - Rooney - Young
    Van Persie
