I think we're going to get beaten. Sadly, I don't think Chelsea are even going to have to play that well to do it.

I think a lot would depend on how we can handle Hazard. If he's successfully marked out of the game, we have a chance to come out with a positive result. But it's admittedly no easy task though.

And also, if Lukaku decides to continue his form, then there are no hopes of winning.

We can match up to them player to player, it all depends on which United side play on the pitch. Our best chance is to go all out attack in the first 15-20 minutes and surprise them. Can't see us coming from a goal down on this one.

    Valencia - Bailly - Smalling - Shaw

    Fred - Pogba

    Alexis - Mata - Rashford

    Lukaku
feck it, might as well just attack. Nobody expects us to win, and Jose knows he needs a big win, so just go for it. I've always wanted to see Mata in his natural position for us, lets see what he's made of there on his old ground. Bailly by default, as Jones vs. Hazard is a no-go & Lindelof can't deal with the aerial threat of Giroud or Morata. If Alexis or Lukaku are having one of their 'donkey days' replace with Martial ASAP.
Alexis loses the ball almost every time he touches it (don’t ask me why), and Rashford is very selfish and just tries to get out a shot out even if there’s a teammate in a better position. How are we ever going to get Lukaku the ball?

Could Lindelof play right back and mark Hazard?

do you genuinely think that Matic is better at CB than Bailly, Lindelof and co?

Matic was really poor in his last game in midfield and defence
Bailly's and Lindelof's confidence looks shot to pieces at the moment, and Jones and Rojo are only just back from injury so too big a risk going into a must not lose match, so Matic it is, not ideal but...

I'm hoping that United can squeeze out a draw, but don't think you will.

Did anyone know Marco van Ginkel is still part of the Chelsea squad? Just saw on team news that he's out for the game tomorrow and I thought "no shit"

He's been registered at Chelsea for five years.

Originally predicted a loss but for some reason I feel more optimistic now that we can nick a result!

Chelsea Football Club (also known as The Blues and The Pensioners) are a professional football club based in Fulham, London. Chelsea were founded on 10 March 1905 at The Rising Sun pub (now The Butcher's Hook) after Gus Mears had previously acquired the Stamford Bridge athletics stadium with the aim of turning it into a football ground. Since there was already a team named Fulham in the borough, the name of the adjacent borough, the Metropolitan Borough of Chelsea, was settled on.

Chelsea's first major title success came in the form of the League Cup with the appointment of former Arsenal player, Ted Drake, who also led Chelsea to the their first ever League title, enabling them to compete in the European Cup, but after objections from The Football League and the FA, Chelsea were persuaded to withdraw from the competition before it started - allowing Matt Busby's Manchester United to start their illustrious adventure with the competition.

After decades of being non-competitors, Chelsea returned to the domestic title fore in 2003 under new owner Roman Abramovich, who fueled an unprecedented spending spree - starting in the mid 2000s. Since the takeover, Chelsea have won 1 Champions League title, 5 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cup titles, 1 Europa League title, and 3 League Cup titles, among others. Chelsea's most prominent rivalries include local clubs Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, title rivals Manchester United, Liverpool and Leeds United. Chelsea play their home games at Stamford Bridge - which had been their home for over a century.

It has been a pretty terrible season so far, we are already a quarter of the way through and realistically whatever results United get this week we are well off the pace of where I believe we should be in the league and we are out of the league cup. The expectations have already needed to be lowered from being expected to make a genuine title challenge to making sure we make the top four. Things don’t get any easier this week, we are away to Chelsea a place United always seem to struggle to get results before hosting Juventus and Everton. ”It’s a tough place to go. It’s very hard to get the results you want and you’re always in for a tough game. Obviously, we’ve dropped points against the so-called smaller teams so it’s now about the need to get some points off our rivals.” said Chris Smalling in the build-up to the game. Any good feeling generated by the comeback against Newcastle United before the international break is sort of broken up by the disruption the International break causes with players coming back in dribs and drabs. Mourinho described it as ‘strange ‘ in his pre match press conference. It’s really difficult to predict how United will perform, the behaviour of this team is that they tend to perform really well in these big matches and are far more complacent in games against smaller side’s, but you just feel that the mood in the dressing room is not what it needs to be to generate the consistency required. You just don’t know what you will get from this side which is a real problem a quarter of the way into Mourinho’s third season.

Tactically Chelsea are a completely different challenge this season. In the two years that Conte was in charge of Chelsea, Mouriho’s approach was all about combating Chelsea’s 3-4-2-1 system, Mourinho used some unusla but effective fomation’s himself to hep cpmbat Chelsea’s strengths. Mourinho's main priority will be stopping Chelsea rather than defeating them - and, first and foremost, that means stopping Hazard. In previous meetings with his former club, Mourinho famously man-marked Hazard, with Ander Herrera called upon to play that role when United defeated Chelsea 2-0 in 2017. I don’t think that approach will work that well again here mainly because Hazard has been the Premier League's best player so far this season and he's darting infield into central positions more under Sarri making him even harder to pick up. Another nesting player for Chelsea is Jorginho who anchors the midfield excellently, and will look to dictate play. What will United do about him? Do we put a player in his zone to put pressure on him or do we allow him to play without pressure, sit deep, try to remain compact to deny him opportunites to find players in dangerous positions in our final third. The good news for United is that Chelsea don’t look particularly good in a defensive sense and United should be able to care out some chances. Chelsea’s switch to 4-3-3 means their wide players Willian and Hazard don’t really protect the full-backs. Cesar Azpilicueta and [Irrelevant point] are now operating as conventional full-backs after the switch in formation, either side of David Luiz and Antonio Rudiger. Azpilicueta is as reliable as ever, but I believe he could struggle in 1v1 situations against a quick direct dribbler like Martial or Rashford. With Hazard staying in an advanced position down the left and Alonso not great in a positional sense, Chelsea are vulnerable down the left. Juan Mata made an excellent impact against Newcastle but probably isn't right for Mourinho's counter-attacking approach here. I expect to see Romelu Lukaku upfront with Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford either side, with the latter two dropping back into deeper, wider positions without possession, before trying to break forward quickly past the Chelsea full-backs on the break. Normally I would tip Lukaku to cause David Luiz problems in the channels, but Lukaku hasn’t looked himself in recent weeks. It will be intriguing to see how United respond and deal with the tactical challenge Chlesea represent.

I think we'll lose but I would be reasonably happy if we at least look like we care. Even at our best we would not expect to win here, so the meltdown later will be a bit stupid.

From experience, going into these games, whenever I think we'll lose, we win (City 3-2) and whenever I think we can win, we lose (Spurs 3-0).

I don't think we'll win, but I reckon it'll be closer than some make out.

    2-1 Chelsea for me.

    Guaranteed win now. YES!

Chelsea away, anything other than a loss is a bonus, it was the same under SAF.

Away at the bridge is not about the result, it is about not dropping our arses and putting in a respectable performance.

That's why you take care of business against small teams- because of the inevitability of dropping points in bogey fixtures like this. The points have to come from somewhere. History isn't a mitigating factor after we've dropped points to the likes of Brighton and are battling for top 4 in October

Expecting to get mauled but maybe we could be pleasantly surprised and stay awake for the whole game. 4 nil mauling though.

We should mirror the way Arsenal approached the game at the bridge. Might lose but won't be cowardly

People are talking like we are a plucky conference side away at Chelsea. It’s a tough game no doubt but I hope the players haven’t given up already before the game has kicked off like many on here have.

    At the station

The following players were seen boarding the train to London:

Goalkeepers (3): David De Gea, Sergio Romero, Lee Grant
Defenders (7): Matteo Darmian, Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof, Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young, Eric Bailly
Midfielders (5): Paul Pogba, Fred, Andreas Pereira, Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera
Forwards (4): Marcus Rashford, Romelu Lukaku, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial

Sanchez likely stayed in London when returning from international duty.

    Damien's predicted XI

Honestly got no idea for this one. De Gea, Young, Smalling, Shaw, Pogba and Lukaku are all certainties but other than those it is anybody's guess. I'll be surprised if I get more than six right from the starting XI this weekend.

    De Gea

    Young Lindelof Smalling Shaw
    Matic
    Herrera Pogba
    Rashford Lukaku Martial

Left Sanchez out due to lack of time working with the squad and Herrera has started five of the six Chelsea games under Mourinho - the one he missed he was injured. Who the centrebacks will be is anyone's guess.

To be fair he was actually very good last year for PSV; he had a serious knee injury last June that meant his options were very limited. Personally I thought he actually had a chance of being in the first team picture - his skillset would in theory fit nicely into Sarri's midfield.

However, a number of big name players weren't spotted getting on the train. Alexis Sanchez was one of those players but there's a possibility that he could have stayed down in London as he only arrived back to Heathrow after international break late on Thursday night.

MEN photographers didn't spot Phil Jones, Diogo Dalot, Marouane Fellaini, Scott McTominay, Jesse Lingard or Antonio Valenica boarding the train.

There have been times in the past when players have got on the train at other stations which is also a possibility.

Sarri was asking in the pre-match conference if he thinks Chelsea play better football than under Mourinho. He said "I don't know. We are talking about a coach who has won everywhere. I have to respect him but I also think you all have to respect him".

I translate that to mean "yes but it's a dickish question and I'm not going to give you the answer you want".
Sarri is just a likeable bloke isn't he?

Chicharito is probably the only player scoring against every time that I still liked!

I've this belief (based on nothing really) that he's a top bloke in real life. Don't ask.
