I would rest Memphis for Young, as some have suggested, and try a new attacking setup which would mean Hernandez up front, Rooney as the second striker and Valencia as the right winger. Keep the same defensive core and with a front three that I have suggested, I think, that would be a team good enough to kill off any threat from Brugge.

    Romero
    Darmian Smalling Blind Shaw
    Schneiderlin Schweinsteiger
    Valencia Rooney Young
    Hernandez

I know this will never happen but I would give it try and see how it would function.

    Herrera has to play surely.
I reckon he won't. LVG will want two DM's again seeing as we're defending a lead. Herrera should have started against Newcastle with one of Bastian or Morgan.

I'd be literally stunned if Herrera got any minutes on Wednesday. This is a game in which we will obviously play two defensive midfielders and use Fellaini as an out ball. Van Gaal knows a bore score draw will see us through. He won't want a "risk taker" like Herrera playing. He might break forward and compromise the shape by trying to create something. Van Gaal won't want that. I'm sure some players will get a break to ensure they're fit for the weekend. The ones who come in though will be the ones Van Gaal trusts to carry out his orders. Herrera clearly isn't one of these.

Kind of agree with this. Valencia and Young on the wings would provide excellent cover for the full backs, while Rooney could also help out in the middle, giving us numerical advantage there + plus it would give Hernandez the opportunity to show us what he got.

Would be pretty toothless up front though, but I'd take it for one game. If we manage to score, I suppose we should also sub off Shaw or Darmian, giving them some rest.

I hope he plays Herrera and it would be great if Pereira also would get some minutes once we lead

Valencia and Young on the wings with Rooney behind Hernandez? This isn't 2011.

We should be going out and slapping them. The first leg was completely one sided.

    Screw this defensive mentality.

You'd be mad to play Valencia as a full back in this game. Were we 4 up, ok, but we are only 2 up.

Just in case anyone hasn't posted this already, BT Sport is showing the game for free on Freeview Channel 59.

Would love us to revert to last season's 433 with Herrera and Fellaini starting. Everyone's moaning about Rooney, but nobody other than Memphis seems to be willing to make a run behind the defence to help him out a bit.

    Romero
    Darmian Smalling Blind Shaw
    Carrick
    Herrera Fellaini
    Mata Rooney Young

Pretty sure Memphis will still start which I'm fine with, as Brugge will be shitting their knickers at the sight of him. Should probably be for Mata if we get to see the above.

I think we might see the same team as Saturday with the exception of Fellaini coming in for Januzaj dropping out. Carrick might force his way back in too after impressing with his sub appearance.

I wouldn't play him if we were 10 up

We've been half a team both times he's replaced Darmian this season

1 or 2 nil borefest. Rooney might even actually in a game for once.

If I was Herrera and didn't play in this one I would seriously be considering my options.

Hopes we rest some players, but not to many. Extremly important match. Darmian, Mata and Morgan can get some rest. If we are going to play with Rooney as our main striker this season we might as well play him this match also to try and get him going.
Hopes Memphis starts and get a goal again, then subbed around the 60 minute mark.
Fellaini in for Januzaj and Rojo in for Blind at some point in the second half.

    So hope for :

    --------------Romero-------------
    Valencia--Smalling--Blind---Shaw
    ----------Carrick--Herrera--------
    Young-------Januzaj------Memphis
    ---------------Rooney-------------

    Subs : Fellaini, Rojo, Hernandez

But i think we will play the the same team as last only with Carrick in for Bastian.

Herrera and Chich to start, back 5 unchanged. We shouldn't piss about no matter how dominant we were in the first leg.

Would love to play with a pacey forward line for this one. I'd like to see Hernandez lead the line with Depay and Young/Januzaj/Wilson either side, I think we can counter attack at will against them. But Van Gaal won't waiver from the philosophy, we'll try to control the game and play out a boring draw.

For those wanting our younger players to get a chance - you do realise that we have been out of EU games for a year. This game we are about to play is one of the most important games we are playing during LVG's tenure.
He will play his strongest team to ensure we win this.
If we fail to make the CL, LVG could lose his job (if he also fails to do well in the league).

He should and will play his absolute best team and wont treat this as some practise game for youngsters.

Liking the fact the team was bitterly disappointed - and people like Mata saying he was enraged by the result against Newcastle. Hopefully, next two games they'll up their game even more and send us into the international break with something to smile about.

    Brugge should be scared !

People picking Valencia as a winger is enough proof for me that message boards and by extension freedom of speech in general should be banned.

Valencia is pretty reliable really, they are not a huge threat and he will offer us more in the attacking third. Plus he needs minutes or will get too rusty.

He'll offer us more in the attacking third? Are you mad? He'll pass inside, slightly backwards, every time he gets the ball.

Darmian is much more of a threat going forward.

Looks good to me. I guess Rooney has to play if he's ever going to regain his form, maybe we can kick start Chicha with a goal or two.

Not so sure about that. Darmian has done well but he hasn't crossed much or that well yet.

No doubt Valencia has had a couple of fairly poor seasons but he can still be a threat and he needs minutes for the sake of the squad.

I noticed this. However, he made quite a lot of barnstorming runs from deep in pre-season. Do you think this is another aspect of LvG being a control freak and trampling all over any sign of creativity in the squad?

Our team has no one to cross. With the ball, Memphis, Young, Shaw, Darmian, Valencia are really bad at crossing.
Valencia doesn't even dare to cross.

To be fair though, how can a man who claimed his team lacks creative players want to trample any sign of creativity?

He "says" a lot of things, some of them even make sense, but what he does, week in - week out, is another thing! Although I'm living in hope that it's laying the ground for that creativity to be re-introduced some time soon.

He has definitely drilled some much needed discipline into us, making us more solid defensively, but I think this strict approach has come at a cost of our creativity. Anyone can set a team up to counter any formation strictly adhered to … but all the inspired coaching in the world can't stop a moment of creative brilliance that isn't scripted.

We're currently lacking those flashes of inspired brilliance at the moment but I'm hopeful they will come now it looks like we've finally got some strong foundations to build on.

I am not saying we should become a thump the ball team. All I am saying is that crossing is an essential skill and we would need our players to be accurate with that, not hit it above everyone's heads 9 out of 10 times.
