Players like Fosu-Mensah, Memphis, Young etc might have to wait until we get some easier / home games in this competition before they play. I think the players who definitely start are: de Gea, Darmian, Smalling, Schneiderlin, Herrera, and Rashford.

Jones, Rojo, Carrick, Mata, and Martial are the the others who didn't start on Saturday that could also play, but I think Jose will be very hesitant to change the entire set of outfield players. So, it probably won't be those 11 players that I mentioned. Blind/Shaw will probably keep their place, maybe Mkhitaryan and Pogba or something like that.

I definitely expect Valencia, Bailly, Fellaini, and Ibrahimovic to be rested. Lingard dropped.

I think that Jose made it very clear that 2-3 players performed badly and that he now knows what they can/can't do. Lingard was one of them and I don't expect him to play for us anytime soon.
Unfortunately for Lingard, he'll have to wait a while before he gets another chance.

Can't see Memphis starting - he hasn't even made the bench this season, has he??

A bit off-topic, but I actually saw him outside Manchester Airport today, dropping off a mate in his big 4x4 Merc.

Edit: Didn't quite have time to get my phone out and take a decent pic, but I did my best...

Isn't this the same thing LVG was being criticised for the whole of last season? Him not playing players he didn't trust equalled throwing them under the bus.

Really surprised at the almost absolute consensus that Ibra does not start. A player like him I expect to be starting virtually every game given his high profile and top fitness.

We should rest the players that are going to play on Sunday. Watford will give us a game, IMO.

Feyenoord will most probably look like this on thursday:

You might know El Ahmadi from his days at Villa. He's a very important player for us on midfield.

Berghuis played for Watford, but was deemed unworthy. Good player for us, but not good enough for Watford says it all I suppose.

And ofcourse our shining star and great leader; Dirk Kuyt. I'm sure you heard of him. Made the world's ugliest hattrick against some club from Manchester.

Going for a bonkers 3-0 win. Not sure who to suggest will start, but hoping to see some rotation for sure.

    The greatest team in history
I was in Rotterdam a couple of years back and a couple of guys stopped me and a mate asking if we were Ajax (they'd played them that day I believe). I said no we were English and then the bigger dude introduced himself as Wes "the best fighter (aka hooligan) in all of Holland". He asked what teams we supported and thinking he'd only know the big ones and wanting to avoid any confrontation I said Leicester (my home town) and instantly he knew their firm was called the baby squad. My mate said Derby County and was rightfully identified as a sheep shagger. Seriously this guy could've been on Mastermind with football firms as his specialist subject. Anyway after regaling us with his graphic football hooligan tales and just when I thought he was gonna smash our faces in he invited us along to the club he and his mate were visiting next to do some coke with him to which we politely declined and made our way back to the hotel.

So yeah, if you're travelling to this one, look out for Wes and tell him Cass says hi.

I'm actually really looking forward to this one - I think it's a combination of the competition being such a low priority with the prospect of seeing the fringe players and their reactions to their exclusions from the first few games that makes it interesting and a little unpredictable. I hoping that at least some players will be out to show the manager that they have something to offer the first team.

Outside of DDG, I don't want to see anyone that we can call a first XI player involved (they should all be focusing on Watford) but I fear Mourinho will probably not rotate as much as I'd like.

    I'd like to see:

    DDG
    Darmain---Smalling---Jones---Rojo
    Carrick
    Schneiderlin---Lingard
    Mkhitaryan---Rashford---Memphis
Maybe Young over Memphis, but as it's in Holland then it might be the best chance we have of seeing something productive from the Dutchman.

In reality I think the front six might be pretty similar to what we've seen in the league, with Rashford being the obvious change from the start. The defence might not be too far away from my line-up though.

Feyenoord's biggest weapon is probably their stadium, it normally has a better and more intense atmospshere than a overrated shitehole like Anfield in my opinion.

However, due to Feyenoord fans behaving like raging lunatics for years, De Kuip will be half empty on Thursday. Only 26.000 fans will be allowed instead of 50.000+, and nets will be placed too.

Their team is in decent form, but they obviously lack quality. Two good or at least half decent players missing with Kongolo and Elia. They also have a very important match against PSV Eindhoven this weekend.

It's a shame really, because it could've been a really interesting match-up, for example Feyenoord beat Sevilla 2-0 in Rotterdam two years ago. Given circumstances I can't see how it would be good and proper interesting match now.

This is a good time to whip out the old Herrera - Schneiderlin - Pogba midfield three and play Rashford from the start.

They also seem to be struggling to sell it out even.

Thanks for the post, looks like both teams have similar setups. Interested to see how our players do, players like Memphis, Jones, Fosu haven't featured since pre-season. Smalling, Darmian haven't even featured since last season.

Yeah I read that too, though it seems that yesterday there were only 2000 tickets left. At the same time I heard that many United supporters were unhappy because they also limited the amount of seats for away fans.

When I heard about the draw I really wanted to go, but then I remembered the sanctions, and a half empty stadium with nets in a match where there's not really anything at stake just seemed very pointless. I do hope there will be no problems in Rotterdam with many fans deciding to watch the match somehwere else, I think it'll be all right but you never really know.

Feyenoord are top of the table with 5 wins from 5.

    Going to be tough
Until you realise Dirk Kuyt plays upfront for them and Memphis was the best player in that league.

All jokes aside they will no doubt be gunning for us, let's hope we have more luck in Holland this time

I see people are picking Lingard and/or Mkhitaryan for this. Jose has said that the people who disappointed him against City won't be playing here.

Vilhena was a young player with decent potential a few years ago. I guess he hasn't developed very well?

I doubt Zlatan wants to have to travel weekdays for a pretty meaningless competition. This is our chance to give the rest of the squad a chance.

Was going to miss this as was away on business and wouldn't get back home until 8 Thursday evening.

Just been informed they've brought the flight forward - I'll be home by 5.30, just in time to change and go down the pub

His development stagnated a bit, but since the end of last season his game has picked up a lot. He decided to stay at Feyenoord even though it seemed he would leave.

As for how good he can become, it's hard to say.

Anyone expecting to see wholesale changes or a completely fresh starting 11 is going to be disappointed I think.

Yes Jose spoke about fringe players getting game time come September, but I can's see him changing any more than 3/4 players from what has been his regular side so far this season.

I think it's fair to assume that Rashford and Herrera both start after Jose's post match comments Vs City. Also expect to see Martial and Smalling in the side.

Apart form that, our first Europa league game of the season and it's a tough away match, don't think we'll see massive changes until the domestic cups kick in, also if we get to the point that we have points on the board in Europe and so can afford to rest players in the last few group games then we might see others getting a run.

I was considering going too but could not find someone to help me get tickets and on second thought it would be safer for me to not stand between Feyenoord supporters in the town i loathe cheering on United.

I do think its a good opportunity to mix it up a bit.
I'd be looking to stick with a smallish group of players who i'd try get in the team every week, so guys like Pogba, De Gea ... Smalling and Blind if it was last year, Bailly complicates things but looked knackered on Saturday and had a long trip for internationals so a break wouldn't do him harm.
Ibra you presume will need to be rested every so often, Rashford and Martial starting together would be nice imo.
Give Darmian a start if your looking to make use of him.
Experiment in midfield and on the wings because we haven't looked hugely convincing as unit so far.
Hererra as a #6 has looked pretty good tbh, that'd be nice to see more of.
