So is it 3 at the back with Darmian playing as CB or 4 at the back with Darmian playing as LB and Young as RW?

    Flippin'ell, a 3-5-2.

If the partnership works, imagine RedRom and Martial against that defence.
Has done well so far. I imagine Martial will go wide at times and put some of his crosses in to Rom.
Why do you call it 352 when it's 532?
They're basically the same thing. Wingbacks will be roaming up and down the pitch anyway.

    Interesting line up for sure.
Can't believe Young would be right attacker, he hasn't played that far forward for ages has he?

If it is wing backs, I trust we won't play like Arsenal did and allow Salah acres to roam into.
Smalling and Jones together makes me nervous. It shouldn't do, but it does.

Will take a draw and get through this one!

Looks like 3-4-1-2 like expected. Some earlier posters tricked me. A bit strange Darmian is picked in my view, but otherwise expected team apart from Bailly out and Martial over Rashford.
I don't think Darmian is a 3rd CB. He's been selected as he is the most defensive of our LBs.

I'd say its a 4-2-3-1 with Young on the RW.

I do like the way we mix things up though. Doubt Klopp was able to predict it when analysing our squad for the game.

    Black.

But I am bricking it now. You just know we're going to be up against a side that hasn't yet shown up in the league so far, and probably won't again after today. I love/hate this game so much. Only at Anfield mind, I always go into games at home expecting us to beat them. This is potentially season defining for them though, and I'm more than willing to say that this early on in the campaign.

Generic footballing comment - first goal is key. Whoever is forced to come out and search for a goal opens themselves up to being picked off by an opposition who, on their day, are amongst the best in the league at exploiting oppositions opening up for them.

Call me negative, but even with the form books firmly pointing in our favour, I'd always take a draw if offered right now.
Okay then no draw today. :houllier:

I'm bricking it too, not because I fear them, but as you say, form goes out the window. However id rather take our chances and try win it then settle for the draw.
Hopefully we can get that first goal please!

If we are 3 at the back Darmian could be picked as a CB because it'd be easier to switch to a back 4 if needed.

Bailly and Rashford picked up injuries during international duty. Rashford just a knock. As if you couldn't hate these stupid international games enough!

I hope Miki has an outstanding game.......he needs to step up big time today, no shying away from tackles or poor first touches. I'm expecting big things from him today.

No complaints about the line up. Will look to sit back in the first 15-20 mins I think and look to hit on the counter. If we get an early goal, I can see us parking the proverbial bus. Rashford to come on after an hour to run havoc on tired legs. Mata and Lingard are good options to come from the bench. Hope we do not need the aerial prowess of Fellaini and can handle that Pool top 3. I can see Pool dominating in the centre. We have to spread them, that is where our strength lies with this line-up.

Eric Bailly sustained an injury while on international duty, and Marcus Rashford picked up a knock with England.
Damn, the break did a number on us. Hopefully Martial and Smalling are able to step up, they are certainly competent enough to replace these two.

I can't see Darmian playing in a back three.

    I can see

    De Gea
    Valencia Jones Smalling Darmian
    Herrera Matic Young
    Mkhitaryan Martial
    Lukaku

    So a 4-3-3 or a 4-3-2-1

I'm thinking Jose may feel Liverpool are strong down that side attacking wise though so may want two players who he trusts defensively, who can get up and down the pitch (unlike Mata maybe) and aren't played out of position (like Rashford or Martial would be)
Seems like you got it perfect. Jose went for that balance.

You think Ashley Young in a midfield 3 is a more likely than Darmian in a back 3?

The United Twitter line-up is very often quite accurate in the order it names the players equating to the formation. In that order, it would be 4-2-3-1 with Young at RW. There's been exceptions, but a lot of the time they're spot on.

A back 3 of Smalling Jones and Darmian doesn't sound great, as it lacks a player who can bring the ball out comfortably. Blind in there would be a bit better IMO.

Damn, no Mata. We just have one passer in Matic, the rest of our midfielders and attackers tend to lose possession or misplace passes often.

Rashford's on the bench. Doubt a knock would of had him there.

Mourinho has just picked Martial due to he not playing Internationals and he was a sub against CP.

Seems Martial to start and Rashford will do the late pressing with 15-20 minutes to go.

    It’s 3-4-3.
Valencia and Young are wingbacks. 3 CBs, Matic/Herrera are CMs, Mkhi & Martial supporting Lukaku.

Saw a pic of LVG with my friend at Anfield on his snapchat. Good to see him supporting us still (I hope!)

I like this setup. I love how jose is pragmatic and has his players for big occasions aka darmian . This reminds me a lot of the chelsea game last season at home. I am happy we have an unpredictability with our line up.

I really want martial to have a blinder and help us win. Imagine the love and trust he will earn of jose. Do it this time Tony Martial
