Aston Villa Football Club (nicknamed Villa, The Villa, The Villans, and The Lions) is a professional football club based in Aston, Birmingham. The club were formed in March 1874, by four members of the Villa Cross Wesleyan Chapel. The four founders were Jack Hughes, Frederick Matthews, Walter Price and William Scattergood. The first match was against the local Aston Brook St Mary's Rugby team. The club were soon playing the modern version of football though and won its first FA Cup in 1887. Aston Villa were one of the dozen teams that competed in the inaugural Football League in 1888 with one of the club's directors, William McGregor being the league's founder.

The infant club's fortunes changed forever when a young Scotsman called George Ramsay stumbled across the Villa players' practice match in Aston Park in 1876. Word spread about how fine a player Ramsay was; he also took charge of training, later describing the newly formed club's approach to the game as 'a dash at the man and a big kick at the ball'. Ramsay was influenced by the Scottish club, Queen's Park, who pioneered what became known as 'combination football' in his native Glasgow, the intricate passing game he introduced was a revolutionary move for an English club in the late 1870s. His subsequent trophy haul of six League Championships and six FA Cups established Aston Villa as the most successful club in England. He has been described as the world's first paid football manager. To this day, Ramsay remains one of the greatest managers in the history of English football, having won the most league titles of any manager in England until he was surpassed by Sir Alex Ferguson in 1999–00 and the most FA Cup trophies until surpassed by Arsène Wenger in 2016–17

Villa are one of only five English clubs to have won the European Cup, in 1981–82. They have also won the Football League First Division seven times, the FA Cup seven times, the League Cup five times, and the UEFA Super Cup once. At the end of the 2018–19 season, Aston Villa had also spent 105 seasons in the top tier of English football. The only club to have spent longer in the top flight are Everton, with 116 seasons, making Aston Villa versus Everton the most-played fixture in English top-flight football. Aston Villa's arch-rivals are Birmingham City, with games between the two clubs known as the Second City Derby. Historically though, West Bromwich Albion have arguably been Villa's greatest rivals. Villa also enjoy less heated local rivalries with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Coventry City. Aston Villa have been playing their home games at Villa Park since 1897.

Very important to win the home games. I'm not worried about top 4 generally - but it's on the basis that we win the home games. Drop points this game and the 2 after that will be very difficult away to Brighton and west ham, which then goes on to 4 must wins to close the seasons. Beat Villa and should be fine.

    Must win. Simple as.

Same team, and bring Pelestri on Erik ffs, I can’t see that giant piece of turd stinking up the place anymore. We immediately go down to 10 men once he comes on. Being stubborn is not helping anyone.

We have 21 points to play for and since the Carabao Cup win we have only taken 11 from 21 points.

If we do the same, it’s risky whether that will be good enough for top 4 especially with our shite GD.

Villa, Wolves, Chelsea (the no doubt game raising shits) and Fulham are not certainties at home whatsoever, especially with our mentality. The away games will all be difficult.

    Nervy 2-1 win.

Hard to see a win here, as much as we need it. Only City are in better form than Villa, they even crushed Newcastle recently.

    Squeaky bum time.

Villa are in very good form so we need to play for 90 minutes not 45!
Two days rest and we go again. Same starting 11 for me, Use Pellistri and sabister as subs over Fred and and Wout.

This will be an extremely difficult game. But we're at home so it gives me hope that we can get the win. We can't gift chances like tonight to Villa though, they'll destroy us if so.

Toughest of remaining home games to play against a manager with a good record against United.

Won't be getting the three points on offer unless the United players knuckle down and try to grind it out. Hopefully ETH doesn't bring Maguire back into the side. A bench that make the team more weaker with every change made is the biggest concern.

I watched them against Brentford the other day and Brentford should have been out of sight against them but never the less if we do not bring intensity and play the ball quickly we won't get anything our of this game.

We won't be swatting anything with that arrogant mindset which has crept in,particularly in the majority of away games

At home we are fully capable and as far as away blues are concerned I think we will beat Brighton and West ham and confirm top four by next Sunday .

Probably the best (or 2nd best) team in the league post WC. We'll draw this one.

The thought of Oli Watkins on Lindelöf/Maguire is doing my head in.

    Fingers crossed we outscore them.

There ain't enough goalscorers in this team to swat any team. Look at the number of goals scored
May be I am being too optimistic but I can see United putting a strong performance with enough goals against Villa and then getting hard fought victories against Brighton and West ham .

Second most in form team in the country right?

It'll be tough but if we can win its a big result.

Villa are flying. Only thing giving me confidence is that the game is at Old Trafford.

Not at all confident of this, despite us being much better at home. Emery loves a result against us, the prick.

    MUST WIN GAME.

This will define how nervy we will go to Brighton and West Ham.

If we can win this game at home, plus having 2/4 points for the next games, the rest of the season will be much more easy.

Villa are doing very well. I think since Emery came, they are second best team in the league, so we should be really careful that it s going to be a really tough game.

I would be the best XI, possible, almost the same as yesterday.

I guess that they will have the ball, and we will try to hit them on counter.

    --------------------------------------------De Gea----------------------------------------------
    Wan Bissaka------------Lindelof------------Shaw--------------------------Dalot
    -------------------------------------------Casemiro-------------------------------------------
    Antony--------------------Eriksen---------------Bruno------------------Rashford
    ----------------------------------------------Martial---------------------------------------------

Nervy win I hope. 2-1, with lots of long balls, cross or corners at the end so hopefully the fridge will be back for the last 5-6 mins.

Very galling that this is a must-win, given a draw would have been fine if we'd put Spurs away. Villa are one of the form teams in the league this season and are within sight if Europe. Any sort of a win will do here.

United over the last 2 months can pretty much be summed up by "One good half, one bad half" - except Sevilla away where we were bad for both

So I just hope our good half is good enough to withstand the bad half

Going to be a tough game. Emery is a good manager and has been a thorn in our side.

Hopefully our home form can carry us over to a win or at least a draw. I feel we're in danger of collapsing and coming fifth. We'll have to be strong as Villa will come with a tight game plan and be very up for this, they could take 6 points this season, I don't recall that happening in 40 odd years.

We'll need players like Bruno to take their chances.

I see Villa as the only potential threat to us finishing top 4 . They are 6 point behind us but we have a game in hand. If we win this it pretty much nails top 4 down.

Spurs are out of it, also 6 points behind us but we have 2 games in hand and their run in is not good, Liverpool and Villa away, leeds away plus a tough game with Brentford.

Maximum effort Sunday and its job done.
