Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel or just Basel, is a Swiss professional football club based in Basel. FC Basel was started by an advertisement on 12 November 1893 that appeared in the Basler national newspaper requesting that a football team be formed and that anyone that wished to join should meet up the following Wednesday at 8:15. So, on 15 November 1893, FC Basel was born in the city of Basel. One of the early clubs captains was Joan Gamper, who later founded FC Barcelona in Spain. FC Basel did not have much of an early footballing success; it took them 40 years to win their first trophy, winning the Swiss Cup in 1933 when they defeated arch-rivals and reigning cup-holders Grasshopper Club Zürich 4–3, in what is now considered to be one of the best cup finals in Swiss football history.

Basel's long-awaited title-win came in 1977 as they triumphed over Servette FC in a playoff. This meant that Basel returned to play in the European Cup but they were defeated in the first round once more, this time by Wacker Innsbruck of Austria, after showing so much promise on their last European outing. After years of disappointment, success followed Christian Gross' appointment in 1999. In 2002, Basel won the double (Swiss Championship and Swiss Cup) and reached the final of the Intertoto Cup. In the following season, they were the second Swiss team to ever play in the Champions League. The city of Basel and the city of Zürich have a long-standing rivalry. Therefore, FCB's most traditional and fiercest rivals are Grasshopper Club Zürich and FC Zürich. Basel play home games at St. Jokob-Park, which is currently the largest club stadium in Switzerland.

Can't wait to hear that music in a Man Utd game again

    Team should be...

    ---------------De Gea---------------
    Valencia--Smalling--Lindelof--Blind
    --------Pogba--------Matic--------
    Mata-------Mkhitaryan-------Rashford
    ---------------Lukaku---------------

Subs: Romero, Darmian, Carrick, Fellaini, Herrera, Martial, Lingard

Your comment about not having herrera and Damian in the team because we were worse today than previous games
No it's because Herrera is bang average and always has been. He's got great work rate and can be very intelligent when pressing and marking, but is severely limited as a footballer. Would rather bring Mata back in.

Did you think that last season when he was our player of the season?

Yeah. He's not a bad player but look at some of the quality midfielders in the world and you must see how he doesn't compare?

I didn't offer an opinion, just interested in yours.

He's not a Matic or a Pogba. I think that gets some people asking what he offers, as he's just a "midfielder" without any speciality.

We finished 6th, so it wasn't very difficult for him to be our player of the season when he played every minute because Carrick was past it and couldn't do the things Matic does.

EDIT: Saw your response to him. My apologies.

4-2-3-1 please. A more auspicious start to our CL campaign than the one under van Gaal. Batter them to get our confidence up.

Not underestimating Basel's record against English teams though.

Bayern have a great midfield, they got beaten by Hoffenheim today, you know the team the mighty Liverpool beat, who got beat by City 5-0 today.

What are you on about? It's not today I'm going off. I've never rated him. Good squad player and he is a good one, but not a starter.

Martial and Rashford on the wings. Miki in the 10. Two early enough goals to settle the nerves.

Hope we can perform well and win. Although Basel can be a tricky team. Need to play much better than today to beat them. I hope a lot of players can step up. Last season we did in the europa league so hopefully it will be the case in champions league as well.
