Apparently we will be forced to play 2 youngsters in defense (Blackett and James) and Young on wingback. Not a good start for a campaign but I think we can manage.

The front three worries me though. I don’t want to see Hernandez starting, it just doesn’t work with him and Rooney.
We have no depth in defence and the jury is still out on if we have quality there.

Without a couple of defensive additions, we will see a lot of lineups with academy kids this season.

Our defences injury record is terrible and we only have five.

    De Gea

    Jones Smalling Blackett

    Young James
    Fletcher Herrera

    Mata

    Rooney Welbeck

It's very hard seeing our defense being able to keep a clean sheet so I'm going for a 2-2 not very confident at the moment.

Januzaj should start on the wknd, was awesome when he came on against Valencia.

the season has just started and we are already without 4 or 5 players because of injuries. so typical united luck here.

    ----------------------de gea-----------------------
    ----------jones------smalling--------blacklett------
    young----------fletcher------herrera----------james
    ------------------------mata---------------------
    ----------------rooney-------hernandez------------

big test for blacklett and james. a prove that our defense is so thin now that 2 or 3 injuries and see what we are left with.

hopefully adnan and RVP are on the bench.

    RIP Phil Hughes
I would like to see james and blackett start on the left. its a good challenge for them and its a chance they should try and take.

Ok, I know people have said that this won't work before, but is front 3 of Mata - Kagawa - Rooney worse than Mata - Rooney - Hernandez?

This is assuming that both Welbeck and Januzaj are not match fit.

Going ambitious at 4-1 to us.

It's happened, Shaw is injured before we even start. Seriously why have we only bought 1 defender (who's now injured) to replace the 4 we've sold?

People suggesting Januzaj to start need to remember that LVG stated he is not fit yet. He played about 15 minutes vs Valencia, no chance he will start IMO.

    Disturbing déjà vu.

We started off ok. I still think lack of confidence was one of our main enemies last season. Hopefully lvg puts it back into the squad.

Glad to see that my 3-0 prediction is shared by so many of you, makes me a lot more confident about our chances!

Doubtful we'll see a new signing in the starting line-up should we get one, so there'll be a few youngsters on show which is always great, though normally I prefer it when they make their debuts at the end of the season after we've already won the league. It's a big step up from pre-season friendlies to the Premier League, but I have confidence that they'll be fine.

Really looking forward to the new season, how different is the outlook now compared to last year?!

Who would have thought, that two players, Blackett and James, neither of whom I thought would be the young players going on tour might be starting in our first game? They have really impressed me, but if that doesn't prove to LvG that our cupboard is a bit bare, then nothing will.

Has Powell played anywhere, for any team so far this summer. I think he might be injured, yet again. That's the story of our team.
Yeah heard almost nothing about him, was expecting him to be loaned out again this season. Shame, would of liked to see him used over pre-season. i think he could have a really bright future here, depending on if he adapts to play in CM. Can't see him getting chances in the AM role.

I'm really excited for the beginning of the season (even if i might not be in to watch this annoyingly), but damn our defense line looks shaky. I'm pretty concerned that since we can't even put out a decent line-up against Swansea on the opening day of the season we're gonna really be struggling when it comes to mid-season battles against top sides.

Its a good thing we don't have the fixture list for the start of the season we had last year...

He looked really promising. My Dad and little boy go to some of the Wigan games and said he looked good, then he faded towards the end of the season as he was obviously injured, then was out towards the end when they really could have done with him. What is it with United players and injuries?

I will reserve judgement until a few games in, we won against Swansea first game last season then went downhill fast. It was a lot harder schedule then. If we can get good results in those first six games, get players in and others off the injury list I will be happy. It will be something if the football is more entertaining for a start.

That's true, get ripped to shreds before we've really begun. That said i do have faith in LvG, but while he's won all of the pre-season games, the performance against Valencia, arguably our biggest challenge wasn't that positive. And it doesn't matter what order you play in in the end, just the total points.

I was at the game on Tuesday, it's hard to judge if they were going full pelt. The last thing needed was someone else picking up an injury in a friendly. Although Big Phil was trying his best. Everytime he goes down, your heart is in your mouth.

Any news on Welbeck? Would not feel comfortable with Hernandez starting we have looked a lot better in preseason with Welbeck next to Rooney. Hernandez does not fit the system we are playing and with a very weak defensive line up we will need to rely on our offensive players for this one.

I think people are overstating the start we have, nothing really is easy in this league. Last season the newly promoted Cardiff beat City at the start and got draws vs Everton & United . If anything this start puts a lot of pressure on us to get results straight away or we will be playing catch up all season long. If we had done our transfer business in time then we would have gone into these games with very strong lineups, given players the time to gel in and maybe even sent a message to the rest of the league but not sure if that will happen now

True i guess, hard to tell properly in a friendly really. But still, i hope we have more in the tank than that else i have very little confidence about the coming season.

That is a good point. These clubs quite often start well, especially promoted clubs. It's later in the season, when injuries, suspensions and not having a big squad kicks in that they fall away.

The good thing from the game was that the attacks are definitely more pacey with more movement off the ball and that they wanted the win and kept going for the win. Moyes would have been happy with the draw.

I have to agree and I am willing to admit its not out of the realms of possibility that we draw or even lose this match. Against Valencia I saw signs that we still havent shaken off the uncertainty at the back that we had last season and I look at the potential line up and see huge holes.

Central Midfield is looking light, I know Fletcher has played well but he has not been tested yet, we all forget that the premier league is extremely high paced and hard fought. As soon as the heat goes up and the first crunching tackle goes in I wouldnt be surprised to see Fletcher come off earlier than expected and Cleverley to come on.....sigh.

The back line will have to work hard this week to be more composed and use their experience, Bony can cause real issues and of course will be used to playing against three at the back from his time at Vitesse.

Our biggest plus is that we will have Rooney and Mata on the pitch who will more than likely have to win this one between them and link ups with Herrera.

I know its premature but I think Young had a weak game against Valencia and I can see him being a defensive number more than attacking and can see him coming off for Januzaj who is 10x better offensively.

Im not 100% confident in this game at all, it will be the first real competitive test for this new system.

What worried me was that we were very open at the back and Valencia basically did what most teams coming to OT will be doing (sit deep and break fast) . The players are clearly still getting used to this system and you can see that as soon as the ball goes wide our wingbacks have no clue whether to go with the man or mark space. Injuries aren't helping either because we need a stable back line which is used to playing together

I think we'll win but I don't think it will be some easy walkover. Do we know if Evans is fit to play?

I'm guessing Welbeck wont be ready so I'd personally start with Januzaj up top with Rooney, he was far more effective than Hernandez the other night. Smalling should be the sweeper in the back 3 with Jones at RCB, both looked superb in those roles against Valencia. LvG has started every game so far with Herrera and Fletch as the CM pairing, I am sure that will remain the case on Saturday.
