    Would like to see:

    .............................DDG................................

    .............Smalling...Carrick...Blind...................

    Darmian....Schniederlin...Schweinsteiger.....Shaw

    ..................Mata................Hererra..............

    ............................Rooney...........................

Forgot about Depay, we really have some depth when you're forced into benching Hererra or Depay.

I think we're gonna thump them. There's no way they'd be ready having just played yesterday, and flying back today. 4-1.

You want us to play in a 3-4-3 formation and with Carrick as one of the defenders? :/

I've been reading Inverting The Pyramid! I genuinely think Carrick would be quite effective there; Smalling could be the stopper and Carrick/Blind could mop up and distribute the ball to midfield efficiently.
Get back in your time machine, 2014 Louis Van Gaal.

Feck I thought it's already Friday, so now I have to sleep two more nights. This takes ages.

I think it will be a good high tempo football and we will win 3:1 (Rooney, Depay, Schneiderlin x Kane)

I'd actually think he'd be less effective there, because he wouldn't get the chance to use his brilliant overview and deadly passes from that position. Carrick is a player who really has to play in the midfield and not down in the defence imo. Like @Brightonian said aswell, that would basically be the same as going back to last season when Carrick sometimes played in that position. I'm not saying he can't handle that position, it's just that he's soo much better in the midfield.

He's obviously better in midfield but his legs are slowing at 34 and the move backwards might be worth looking at. It also makes it easier for us to get Schniederlin, Hererra, Mata and Shweinsteiger in the same team. Having said that, we're Manchester United so before long they'll probably all be crocked anyway and we won't have such a selection headache.

This is what I think we will go with (but not putting my entry into the line up predictor yet - as the LVG's presser may throw up more light, especially on the GK situation).

I think we will be very solid defensively and score a couple of goals - one in each half. 2-0!

Schweinsteiger would replace Carrick at 65 minute, while Rojo will play in place of Blind at 75 minute. Despite winning, the moaning will start because Herrera would be left on the bench for the whole game!

I think we might not play an outright 3 CB system, but one which becomes that defensively. From LVG's comments on preferring a left footed CB for the LCB position, I am inferring that he intends one CM (either Carrick or Schneiderlin) to drop deep and form a 3 CB team with Smalling and Blind on either side.

Agreed, with Darmian and Shaw given far more license to get forward, safe in the knowledge that 2 CB's and one DM are holding the fort.

And don't forget another DM screening ahead. So four defensively minded players, which is what LVG prefers.

That's my submission in the score prediction thingymajingy as well. Haven't got a good feeling about this one!
It'll be interesting to see the difference in the two clubs performances considering the completely different nature of both clubs pre season games.

I just think Spurs have changed less and will therefore work better as a team compared to us. We'll also have pressure of being the favourites for the game and at home, it will be perfectly setup for Spurs to hit us quickly on the counter and you saw how well that went against PSG.

I reckon it'll be 2 - 0 to us. Spurs were pretty poor against us both games last season and as you say haven't really changed. I think we have strengthened ourself with gifted players who im hoping and expecting are able to adapt quickly and because of that we will blow spurs off on saturday.
I do seam to have a slightly indifferent optimism about this season though maybe I'm wrong and will be brought back down to earth after the spurs game.

I'd like to see us repeat what we did against Spurs last season when it looked like they were setup to do this, and press them from the first ball, jostle and cause them to make mistakes in possession.

They were pretty poor on the ball last time at OT, and I think a lot of that was down to our tempo. That being said, I'm not sure how feasible it is for us to hit those heights so early in the season. I think it'll be an open game, and that there will be goals by both sides.

That's the problem. I'm also not sure it was a good idea to have such a big gap between our last friendly and our first game. I think Spurs will be far closer to match sharpness than us, but we will probably be fresher. Either way, that performance against PSG had my alarm bells ringing off. We looked incapable of defending against strong strikers and fast strikers and Kane is looking match sharp.

It'll be a good game though and i'm happy to see this as our opener because you just know it'll be entertaining which is just what you need after the summer break.

    That's my 39,000th post.

Possibly we will have around 65% ball possession without creating much out of it. Our attacking play isn't fluent and fast enough to beat Tottenham and our defense is too shaky to not concede. 1-1 I reckon.

Can't see us start with that formation considering in all of our friendlies Memphis played behind Rooney, Young on the wing and two defensive midfielders.

Well LVG himself stated that he will revert back to 433 in the premiership that worked well in the sceond half of last season

We've played in van Gaal's 433 in preseason, when did he say he was reverting back to one holding mid? He calls last years formation 433 with the point backward and this year we're playing 433 with the point forward. Van Gaal doesn't care what others call it.

    From the LvG interview:

    More or less 4-3-3
That the midfielder is [sometimes] in front of the striker is not bad because I think you do need variation in your attack
It sounds more like we play already in a 433 with Memphis as the most offensive of the three midfielders.
