With Darmian and Dalot missing, I'm guessing Shaw starts and Young is the back up for both fullback positions on the bench.

Irrational exuberance perhaps, but we seem to have found our footing. A convincing win, for United of course, is the likeliest result. 3-0 with 2 or 3 glorious chances wasted.

The team picks itself from Mourinho's perspective. No changes apart from Fred coming in to replace the suspended Matic. (From last PL game). Young Boys was just a rotation game for midweek.

I know Wolves play some good stuff but we're home ffs we should thump them. Speaking of, when last we won 5-0 at home in the premier league on a Saturday with kickoff at 3pm?

    At The Lowry

The following players were seen at The Lowry Hotel:

Goalkeepers (3): David de Gea, Sergio Romero, Lee Grant
Defenders (6): Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Luke Shaw, Ashley Young
Midfielders (5): Andreas Pereira, Scott McTominay, Marouane Fellaini, Paul Pogba, Fred
Forwards (5): Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku

Matic and Rashford miss the game through suspension, Rojo is still injured while Herrera and Jones are in training but seem to have just missed out.

Mourinho has explained why Dalot is left out of the squad:

"I want him in this process of adaptation to play totally fresh. So he's not playing tomorrow, he plays Tuesday again, to play totally fresh.

"To play for Manchester United is difficult enough for a kid of 19-years-old coming from another country and after an important injury and surgery I think is difficult enough, he doesn't need to face more difficulties because of the accumulation of matches, so plays 90 minutes in the Champions League, difficult pitch, recovered totally and Tuesday play again.

"But he showed for the ones that don't know him very, very well, he showed them he is not a player to be here just on formation, is a player to be here for positions, he's a very good player."

That's a high praise from Jose. He didn't need to justify the exclusion as we understand that Dalot needs more recovery time after such surgery.
But it's still nice to hear the manager gave reason, while acknowledge him as a very good player.

So Jose can be protective of young players after all? I thought He always throws them under the bus, I learned it from RedCafe so it must be true.

Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club, commonly known as Wolves or The Wanderers, is an English professional football club based in the city of Wolverhampton in the West Midlands. The club were founded as St. Luke's in 1877 by John Baynton and John Brodie, after a group of pupils at St Luke's Church school in Blakenhall had been presented with a football by their headmaster Harry Barcroft. Two years later, they merged with local cricket and football club The Wanderers, to form Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club then became one of the twelve founders of the English Football League in 1888 and finished the inaugural season in a creditable third place, as well as reaching their first ever FA Cup Final, losing 3–0 to the first Double winners, Preston North End.

The club spent 33 years in the top flight from 1932 to 1965, their longest continuous period at that level (albeit league football was in hiatus from 1939 to 1946 due to World War II). During the 1950s, the club was English league champions three times (1953–54, 1957–58 & 1958–59), whilst under the management of Stan Cullis. Wolves has also finished runners-up in the league on five occasions (most recently in 1959–60) and in third place on a further six occasions (most recently in 1960–61). On the domestic cup front, they have won the FA Cup four times, most recently in 1960, and has finished runners-up on a further four occasions, and the Football League Cup twice, in 1974 and 1980.

Wolves have long-standing rivalries with other West Midlands clubs; the main one is with West Bromwich Albion, against whom they contest the Black Country derby and with whom Wolves has played more league fixtures (146) than any other football opponent, even though the two clubs have not met in a league fixture since 2011–12 (the last season they competed in the same division as each other). Wolves also share rivalries with the two Birmingham clubs, Aston Villa and Birmingham City, though they are much further away than West Bromwich. They play their homes games at the Molineux Stadium, the first stadium ever built for use by a Football League club and one of the first British grounds to have floodlights installed and it hosted some of the earliest European club games in the 1950s.

There is no doubt in my mind that this a tricky test for United. The wins over Burnley and Watford and in the Champions League against Young Boys will have build some confidence in the players and team but the loss against Brighton in particular has put pressure on the side to string 5 or 6 wins togther in the league to get ourselves back on track. Wolves will not be a straight forward three points, they can call upon a genuinely impressive squad of players including, in one the best central midfield pairings in the league, the all-Portuguese central duo of Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves. They caused Manchester City big problems on the counter-attack in their recent 1-1 draw with them and their manager Nuno has a point to prove, and presumably an ambition to coach a major club once again. Jose is certainly impressed with them and knows we are in for a hard game,
"They have a winning mentality from the Championship and they arrive in the Premier League getting good results. Even against the champions [Manchester City], they had a positive result [a 1-1 draw at home] and a very good performance, so confidence is high and they’re a very difficult opponent for us.“ he said pre-match.

Another factor that makes this game tricky for United is the preparation time, United have only had a couple of days to prepare for Saturday’s match, following the 3-0 win over Young Boys in the Champions League on Wednesday night. “The two days in between [games] are hard,” the boss admitted, when asked about the team’s preparations during a busy schedule. “When you have three days, it’s much easier and you have one day to work tactically. When you have two days, it’s much, much, much more difficult because everything is about recovering from the match and then preparing for the next one. But the team is finding stability and confidence levels are important. We're back at home after three away wins, and I think the atmosphere will be very positive for us. We know it’s going to be difficult but we are confident.“

Wolves will provide a tough tactical test and United lack of tactical preparation hopefully won't prove vital. Wolves play 3-4-2-1 and usually when faced with a team that plays a three man defence Jose also does the same so the opposition does not have overloads down the flanks. Jose switched to that system earlier in the season against Tottenham in anticipation of them playing a three man defence only for them use a back four. Wolves have not moved away from there system so far so it will be interesting to see what Jose does here in terms of United's system, will he stay with the 4-3-3 or change to a 3-5-2?

United have looked more stable defensively in recent games and a lot of credit has gone to Maroune Fellani who has been used as the deepest midfield with Pogba and Matic either side of him in the 4-3-3. I personally don't see this being a long-term selection I think given that Watford and Burnley like to play direct football using crosses from wide and long balls to their target men Fellani was well suited to helping United defend those threats. When opponents got the ball into wide positions he would often drop into a centre-back position ready to help defend the cross coming in from wide. I think if Matic was available here he would be the deep player with Fred coming back in the side to give United more energy and passing quality, but Matic's suspension and Fellani's good form probably keeps him in the side with Fred coming in to replace Matic.

With a change of shape to a 3-5-2 I would look to use Sanchez up front with Lukaku. We are still waiting for Sanchez to find his true form for United and I think the problem with him tactically is that he doesn't really know his role in the team. Is he the creator? drifting infield to get on the ball between the lines. Sanchez usually perform better when he is given a goal scoring brief and it was no surprise that his best from for Arsenal and United in pre-season came when he was played up-front.

Subs - Romero, Young, McTominay, Pereiera, Mata, Lingard, Martial.

Surely if Alexis has another stinker, he should be dropped to the bench permanently. Wonder how long Mourinho tolerates his 3/10 games. Hopefully, Alexis has a good game.

Matic will be a big miss for us, I feel. Not sure how this is going to go tbh, we're on a good run but you always know that we can out in an absolute stinker of a performance at any time, plus Wolves are actually a decent side. Either a 2-1 slim win, or a uninspiring 1-1 draw.

I hope I'm wrong and we thump them though.

Birmingham '11. One of Berbatov's infamous stat padding hat-tricks.

    Could have overlooked something, though.

Why? It's not televised in the UK neither. Does Sweden have some link with Wolves/Unites?
I've had a subscription to the swedish channels (canal+ and viasat) that own the right to show premier league football here since 2003, and they show very close to every single game including Manchester United.
This situation is very rare and freaks me out a bit:nervous:

Oh that's fair enough. Very odd. Would have thought with Lindelof in the squad now too even more reason to show us.

    Last minute lineup questions

Mourinho has confirmed that Alexis Sanchez will be starting today and that Anthony Martial will be benched:

"Sanchez plays tomorrow. Because Martial played 90 minutes [in Switzerland] and Sanchez played zero." When asked if Sanchez could step up to another level, Mourinho replied: "Every player has another level to step up."

So, with less than an hour until lineup predictions close, the only question really is who will replace Nemanja Matic in the starting lineup? I've gone for Fred but could just as easily be Andreas Pereira.

All the wife’s family are Wolves fans. We have to win this, please :(
I’m in this same boat. The banter with the family is amazing. I’m at a wedding so will be on my phone checking for updates.

    The return of a Legend

Sir Alex Ferguson has returned to watch United! It was only last month that Sam Allardyce said that he was aiming to be back for the New Year.

You can discuss the great news here.

Lindelöf. They use to show the teams with Swedes in.
There are a lot of fans in Sweden of course. But a lot of fans of Liverpool also. Maybe Liverpool is more attractive now

Third match in a row against a team that wears yellow and black, but finally at Old Trafford so we don’t have to change kit this time.
