    McFred back in town.

Would prefer a solid 3-man base with Sabitzer right and Fred left ahead of McTominay. The game will be won/lost in midfield, and it's the strongest area of Newcastle's side; if we can't bypass it, we need to match up to it outright otherwise this will be a losing game, more than likely.

No point predicting an XI at this stage as we need to see if any of our international players get injured in their 1 or 2 matches away.

Just reading the thread though, as regards returnees, I doubt Eriksen or Martial would start their first match after lengthy absences. They'll be eased back in to their return with sub appearances first. And I doubt we'll see Eriksen in the matchday squad until later in April. Hopefully Martial, who has already returned to training, can be included in the matchday squad sooner than that but, again, I'd expect him to be eased in with one or two sub appearances rather than straight in from the start.

Newcastle will be right up for this to beat us infront of their fans to make amends for the league cup final. They shit the bed at Wembley because of the occasion, but they play at St. James' Park every week. They're in bad form in the league but you always want a big game to get you out of a rut and I think that's what they'll be seeing this game as.
I would take a draw to be honest, we haven't been great on the road and they're a strong team along with the aforementioned motivations

would really love Martial to be fit for us....

i think we'd win quite comfortably with a team of

    ------------------------DDG----------------------
    AWB------Varane-----LM----------Shaw
    ------------Sabitzer---Fred------------------
    Antony---------Bruno----------Rashford
    ----------------------Martial--------------------

really solid pacey counter attacking team. Antony to help with Saint Maximin

We are also in bad form in the league and were poor against Fulham. Newcastle will dominate midfield when we are missing Casemiro. Top four will be very tough.

We better beat these bloody birds.
They're on the decline. And we should have a well rested squad.
Only up to a point - and less of a level than most clubs.

The few who haven't been called up (Fred and AWB especially), or the ones currently injured (now inc. Rashford and Varane), will get a rest - but that's a smaller amount of the squad than most clubs, including Newcastle, who'll have fewer international call ups.

I never get when people talk about how the players will get a rest during international break. It's a break for the clubs schedule, but many of the players don't get one - they just travel around the world playing and training with their international sides instead. So not 'well rested' at all when they return.

But at least they'll get a 4-6 day break before their first international game, and another after their second one before we play Newcastle. So that's at least better than the games every 3 days they'll face when our matches restart. :)

    Would take a point now
What a solid result to be wanting.

We're heading into an international break and have a solid squad that is miles better than Newcastle's who are definitely on a decline - why on earth are you willing to just settle for a point.

It’s away against a strong team with a rabid fan base who wants revenge for the final. A point would also suffice to keep them at bay in the fight for 4th.

I don't think Eriksen will start, but having him on the bench would be great (although I'm not so sure he is a great sub-type player) but if he can get the last 15-20 minutes that would be perfect.

Probably for the same reason some were happy to settle for a point at Liverpool despite others dismissing that stance - because it's our hardest league game left and we aren't in a must win situation. So I'd certainly take a draw in a tough away game and look to win more of the easier looking fixtures we have left.

If we can get a win, then brilliant. But I'd certainly settle for a draw right now. Just like I would have done before the Anfield game.

Hope Eriksen is back sooner than expected, but I'm slightly more pessimistic and think he probably won't start a game until Everton or Sevilla. He could be on the bench for this and/or Brentford though!

De Gea, Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Fred, Sancho, and Rashford are a few of the names that won't be on international duty and have a strong possibility of playing. Some of them have knocks but I think the time off will do them a lot of good.

Also as touched on, Eriksen, Martial, and Garnacho missing international games instead of more games for us is a bonus if we can get them fit sooner than estimated! Just got to hope key players don't come back injured.

No casemiro and they'll want revenge for the final, easy win for them.

Without checking it out I’d imagine we have more internationals on duty than Newcastle
    Not on duty will be
    DDG
    AWB
    Varane
    Rashford
I don’t think any other starters will have a rest

Yeah, we definitely have a lot more call ups - Newcastle had 7, then Pope withdrew from England at same time as Rashford.

We've also got Fred and Sancho not on duty who may be starters - especially with Casemiro's suspension in Fred's case.

Dropped points I reck9n. We've been shite recently, Newcastle will want revenge for the cup final and without casemiro to steady the midfield, I can only see one outcome. Hopefully we can have martial back for this
We’ve been tired. Seriously fecked. Let’s hope some of the players get a rest before this game.

If we lose this one and Spurs beat Everton the following evening, we’re out of the top 4.

Spurs have played 2 more games than us and the Geordies, so there’s an opportunity to claw our way back into a top 4 slot, but our recent form against low ranked teams is something to worry about.

I’d go with others and settle for a point, but it’ll be tough achieving that.

It’s important we get Licha back on time. What’s with Argentina friendly Vs Curaçao? Still showing TBD on 28th (Tuesday) - hope he’s back to Manchester all safe and rested to start the newcastle game. Good for us our game is on Sunday so that technically gives him 4 full days to travel and rest and be ready

Spurs and Newcastle won’t win all of their remaining games. Top4 is not a worry.

    …and we will?
Palace, Leeds, Southampton (the last two at home) were all certain wins against bottom placed clubs. Then the implosion at Anfield.

I think we’ll just do it, but it’s going to end up being close.

I'd say this is possibly our biggest game of the remaining season (followed by Chelsea at home). A win here would give us the confidence to go and seal a top-four finish and obviously dent Newcastle's chances. Losing would very much do the opposite.

Unless we play well for two halves, I don'r see us getting three points. We've had too many games where we've had very poor periods (up to 30 mins) and good sides will take advantage of that.... look what Liverpool did in 41 minutes. I'd take a point now if offered

You're right, it was an overstatement. Perhaps I should rephrase that I wouldn't necessarily be disappointed with a point (depending on circumstances...not blowing a multi goal lead it conceding in the 93rd minute).

Tbh I've felt our performances have fallen short domestically of late. Our players are still travelling and playing competitive games in this international break...so I wouldn't call it a rest...but admittedly there's not that 3 day turnaround.

Liverpool debacle aside, our performances against Leeds away , Leicester, West Ham, Fulham and Southampton at home were pretty mediocre at best. Southampton game some mitigation obviously but I'd hardly have called us good even prior to the sending off against a side bottom of the league.

I get your gist though. I don't think I'd rip your hand off for a point now as much as I'd expect it to be a tough time away from home tbh. It wouldn't be a bad point shall we say.

Just my opinion mind you. You're not alone. More than half my pals think I talk shite too.

Newcastle's league form going into the game is 2 wins out of 2 and ours is 0 wins out of 2, so suggestion that momentum is in our favour is untrue, it's actually the opposite. And our record away from home against decent sides is poor, and we're missing Casemiro.

You'd have thought the Liverpool debacle would have taught our fans a lesson about over-confidence.

Eriksen might be a big ask for this game. Even if he’s fit I wouldn’t risk rushing him straight back in. I’d give him some cameos of the bench first. Sabitzer and Fred should have enough in this game to press and unsettle their midfield.

    Big game this.

A win puts us 6 points ahead of Newcastle in 5th with easier remaining fixtures, 4 points ahead of Spurs in 4th with both us and Newcastle having a game in hand on them. Hard to see us finishing last in a three horse race from there.

A draw would be okay. A loss and there's real top four pressure.

We should beat them. We handled them very well in the cup final and we should have Eriksen back. Will be disappointing if we drop points.

    That's fair enough, yeah.

I'd class an away game against either as equally tough, and would be happy enough with a point at both grounds.

In the position we're in then, so long as we take care of the more winnable matches we have and don't drop many silly points, then draws in our two toughest away games is fine by me.

We have had this several collapses away from home this season and that makes me worried about Newcastle/Brighton/Spurs games. Winning would be perfect but they'll want to beat us more than anyone else after that loss in CC final.

I really don't expect to see Eriksen against Newcastle. And certainly not any more than a cameo whenever he does make his first appearance back.

He's not had a short knock - he's been out for 3 months and had a moon boot on for much of that time. It's going to take him some time to rebuild fitness and match sharpness enough to start PL matches.

I've been delighted to see the positive updates on his fitness from him and ETH - and he seems to be doing some individual and light training now. But I haven't seen any photos / suggestions that he's at the stage of doing full training with the first team squad and already in contention for selection as soon as Newcastle? ETH said 'April' but I don't think he meant as early in April as the first few games. But I hope I'm wrong.
