I would love to see something very different and attacking.. Even if we loose we need good football..

4-3-3 with more bodies in midfield, Rooney, Schwein and Fellaini to be dropped, I know it wont happen but Id like to see..

    De Gea
    Darmian Smalling Blind Jackson
    Herrera Schneiderlin Pereira
    Januzaj Martial Depay

Subs: Romero, Young, Schwein, Rooney, Keane
really like that side....lots of potential for movement up front and would be lethal on the break

    Would love to see:

    -----------------DDG

    Darmian---Smalling---Blind---CBJ

    ---------------Schneiderlin

    --------Herrera-----------Pereira

    --Lingard-------------------------Martial
    -----------------Rooney

Anyway, think a 1-0 could go either way. Probably to us.

I think he will play two holding midfielders. Carrick and Morgan. Then Memphis wide with Rooney behind Martial. I suspect Herrera will be benched. Although with our manager it is hard to guess.

Yeah man. I agree. I doubt we'd see anything less than a double-pivot DM system. I think there's a good chance of seeing Fellaini behind Rooney as well.

I think Newcastle are the only team in the league who I wouldn't swap managers with... so thats interesting... sort of.

I mean, it's more interesting then this match will be at least... but then I could have said Newcastle are a football team, and so are we... and reading that would be more interesting then this match probably will be.

I really don't like him, there I said it. :(
Don't worry DT, you're with the vast majority these days. I kind of, if stories are true and he offered to resign twice, have some sympathy for him.

I want him gone, but I'd blame the powers that be, as much as I'd blame him if we continue to fall behind. Especially with the quality of managers currently in the market and available.

    But that's another debate.

Yes watching United make me suffer alot nowadays But just can't miss a game. Hopefully LVG show us some excitement, sadly deep down I'm sure he is a failure and boring cnut.

The negativity on here is so sad. pretty annoying.

Change out Januzaj for Lingard as @DomesticTadpole said he is playing u21 for match rhythm..

I just dont want two CMs... Thats all i aimed to do.. Have Herrera and Pereira flank one of schneiderlin or carrick, allowing us to play Lingard Martial and Memphis still...

The possession stat gets bashed on here but it is important to dominant, its VGs over importance of JUST possession that is meaningless... We could pass it between defenders and keeper and hed point at the possession as a way of indicating progress, we dont have one of the top 10 strikers in the world anymore, this means we need to create more chances than before.. Possession isnt directly related, I wonder how many goals have come through set pieces?.

He needs to let go of two possession CMs starting every game, this isnt BBVA

I have no confidence in winning this game, I actually fear (and feel) we will lose to Newcastle. If this was Keegan's Newcastle or even Bobby Robson's Newcastle I could swallow it but the current side...? It speaks to how far we have fallen that its difficult to be bullish before this game.

I feel sorry for the away contingent who are going to drag themselves up to the North East for a Tuesday night fixture, just as the weather turns Arctic, to watch Louis' philosophy.

Good 20 minutes against Chelsea - with them missing golden opportunities (lucky to draw).
Barely beat Swansea (lucky to win).
Barely could muster a shot against League One opposition (lucky to win).
This is what we were seeing at the start of the season, when we were winning games by 1 goal.
Our attack was useless, but we were scraping wins.
The luck ran out and we then went on a run of 8 games with no wins.
Our luck seems to have returned and we are once again winning games by the skin of our teeth, by 1 goal.

I think we will lose or draw our upcoming game, simply because we are not a good team (we need to accept this) and our away performances are not particularly good.
Our home record is actually pretty good, so its no surprise that the last 3 games which we are unbeaten, have all been home games. For these games we averaged 1 goal per game (which is normal for our team).

Some people think we have turned a corner - I disagree.
I think we are proceeding exactly as we were at the start of the season. Nothing has changed and unless something changes, I expect us to lose all our away games from here on in.

I'm going to guess 1:0 to NUFC. NUFC are dismal at the moment, but the last league performance against Arsenal they were unlucky to loose.

I keep tuning into these bore fests in the hope we'll turn the corner and start scoring some goals. But we all know it'll be 0-0 up to 75 minutes or so and either we'll score a fluke goal or Newcastle will catch us out on the counter.

Looking at our away form in league we have scored 12 and conceded 13. Won 4 Lost 4 Drawn 2.
I'm going for a one nil loss or a one nil win. Awful spectacle whatever the result.
Would play the same team but put Rooney at 10, Memphis on left, Schneiderlin for Fellaini and Young for Borthwick-Jackson.

I don't think we will lose this as they seem as inept as us, so this has 0-0 written all over it. Liverpool will walk the game against us and I think Southampton will beat us at Old Trafford too. Stoke should get the draw at OT minimum while Chelsea will destroy us at Stamford. Van Gaal will be saved by 1-1 draw at Sunderland which will be deemed as a heroic performance.

    The Line-Up I'd pick:

    De Gea
    Young - Smalling - Blind - CBJ
    Schneiderlin - Herrera
    Lingard - Rooney - Depay
    Martial
What Van Gaal will probably pick:

    De Gea
    Young - Smalling - Blind - Darmian
    Schneiderlin - Carrick
    Mata - Herrera - Martial
    Rooney

Yeah after Norwich and stoke. Apparently woody persuaded him to stay on. Not sure how valid the reports were though.
What's this in reference to? Can't find the original post - looked through this thread.

Oh I said I had a wee bit of sympathy for LvG, if reports are true that he offered to resign twice, but was persuaded to stay on by Woody.
    Ah okay.

That can't be true, can it??

Didn't the same thing happen with Moyes?

Offered to resign after we lost to Liverpool at Old Trafford but Woodward gave him another chance.

I'm actually not aware of the Moyes one, tbf. So I don't know.

I honestly have no idea bud. There were just some 'reports' going around that that is what happened. I think it was after Norwich and Stoke, respectively. When LvG made that comment "...i don't need to get fired, I can also decide to walk away".

Positive prediction for the first time in a few weeks.. Went for 0-3 to us. Fancy Rooney, Martial, and Memphis to have good games in attack. Convinced Mata and Herrera will be dropped and we'll play as close to 442 as we're going to get under LvG from the start of a game.

    de Gea
    Darmian Smalling Blind Borthwick-Jackson
    Carrick Schneiderlin
    Lingard Rooney Memphis

Newcastle 2-0 United. Depay will be benched and Rooney will start most likely. Scholesy will have another rant on BT Sport. van Gaal will be pleased with the performance because we restricted them to only 2 chances in the game.....but they just happened to score from both of them. But we were the better side because we had 85% possession.

December was a dreadful month for United and the results of that month will cost us challenging for the league in my opinion. The target again has to be secure the a place in the top four. It is disappointing because this season we were all expecting greater progress from United under Van Gaal. 70 points should secure a place in the top four. We are not on track to get this, so the team are under pressure to win matches, it also feels like the team need another win to help establish some confidence again. “We have won two times in a row and maybe it shall give us a boost. You never know. But now we are playing away, it's also different and Newcastle United is playing very well I think. Ok, I see their game against Arsenal and they played very well. But they didn't win and that's the most important thing in football. I don't hope that they win against us. We have to beat them.” Van Gaal said. The spirit of the side is not good at the moment, we are under pressure and not looking confident. I think playing away might help the players a little bit more as the atmosphere at Old Trafford is not great at the moment and the weight of a victory in a difficult away game is always better. Let’s hope that the team get another win, and lets hope that its generates some more confidence ahead of an immensely difficult trip to Anfield on Sunday.

Tactically the game will be similar to the game at Old Trafford back in August when Newcastle managed to secure a 0-0 draw. United will command possession and Newcastle will look to counter-attack down the flanks. A very predictable pattern of play. We all know United’s problems, they move the ball too slow, don’t take enough risks and play with too many passers which means opponents have time to recover good defensive organisation. Van Gaal needs to do something about this with his team selection, we need more dribblers in the side. Newcastle have improved defensively in recent weeks partly because they've tucked inside and played narrow, and partly because the midfield has screened them better. United will get space wide and need to attack with width. Daryl Janmaat Newcastle’s right-back has made some defensive errors this season, he doesn't like playing against quick, direct opponents. Anthony Martial or Memphis Depay should play on this side so either way, Janmaat will be forced to cope with speed, but he has also regularly been Newcastle’s brightest attacking option, happy to dribble the ball forward dangerously from deep.

United should get some joy against him, but he could also cause problems the other way so it will be an interesting battle down that flank. On the left Paul Dummett plays a narrow left-back role to help protect Coloccini who lacks pace. The right flank is a bit of problem for United at the moment. Playing Juan Mata from the right is disturbing the attacking balance of the side. Mata wide is not a terrible idea and was effective last season, but this was in a 4-3-3 system (which naturally means he is playing higher up the pitch) and he also had an attacking right-back who could get forward and provide width in attack (Valencia), but this season Van Gaal has used a 4-2-3-1 system and Darmian has proved extremely underwhelming attacking threat from right-back. It also means United don't have enough pace going in behind the opposition defence on the outside or when our striker moves towards the ball there is no reverse movement beyond him with Mata in that role. The time has come for change in this position. Lingard and Young could be alternatives. In the centre Newcastle’s centre-backs are protected by a tough-tackling and very defensive-minded midfield duo.Jack Colback and Vurnon Anita have had knocks in recent weeks, so it remains to be seen which of them partners Cheick Tiote. They will maintain a position ahead of the back four. So United’s second striker or No.10 might struggle to influence play in the central zone. In possession this duo keep things simple, tending to move the ball wide rather than attempting more ambitious passes into attack. Who Van Gaal selects in No 10 position will define United’s approach in this match. Herrera, Mata, Rooney and Fellani could all play there and are all vastly different types of player that offer different things.

The most interesting thing about Newcastle’s system is the role of the wide players. , McClaren doesn’t deploy conventional wingers both Moussa Sissoko and Georginio Wijnaldum are central midfielders by trade, and therefore Newcastle’s midfield quartet is often very narrow, the four players extremely close together without the ball. It’s 4-2-3-1 at times, but more like 4-2-2-2 on other occasions, with the wide players moving inside. These two will be the players primarily concerned with counter-attacking. The former tends to hug the right touchline somewhat unconvincingly, and might take lessons from Wijnauldum, who surges forward into inside-left positions and provides a goal threat. The quicker Newcastle get the ball to these two, the more dangerous they'll be. An alternative maybe a cautious, counter-attacking 4-5-1 formation, with Perez on the left flank, and Georginio Wijnaldum playing as the No. 10. Either way United need to defend counter-attacks better than they have recently when they been unusually prone to breaks down the flanks. Overall this season United’s organisation without the ball has been superb -- the distances between the lines, the tracking of dangerous opponents, the covering in defence. So we should be able to control most of Newcastle’s attacks.

Subs – Romero, Borthwick-Jackson, McNair, Herrera, Fellani, Mata, Pereira

Borthwick-Jackson has done little wrong in the handful of game he has played, but Young deserves to play because his form has been really good in recent games. I’d put him at left-back and he tends to struggle more against players who ‘drift’ infield rather than a player like Sissoko who is a pure powerful runner. Young should be able to match him. I expect Schneiderlin and Carrick to return to the side to replace the injured Scweinstiger and ineffective Fellani in midfield. On the right I believe the time has come to remove Mata from this false wing role and get a more direct player like Lingard in the side to try and generate some more penetration. Mata would find it hard to influence the game centrally against a Newcastle side who pack the centre of midfield with defensive midfielders and playing Herrera in this role is effectively playing a 3rd midfielder. Rooney in that role is not ideal either, but he has found some form recently and I think he will provide a greater goal scoring threat than any other option with have in that position. Memphis came off the bench to great effect at the weekend, but he needs to find some consistency to keep his place in the side.
