Are we going straight to pens if it ends in a draw? (like it would :nervous:) in two minds, because I've gone with a rare 2-2 draw and for us to win on yet again on penalties with De Gea rubbing it in even more in their faces.

Bailly and Jones instead of Lindelof and Smalling, Rashford instead of Lingard and that should be our starting line up against WHU.
Yeah I think so. I think this show that Darmian will likely be first choice unless he is crap today.

Lingard option for big games, but we need more attacking quality against West Ham at home. Martial or Rashford better option for that game unless we drop say Matic or Herrera and add another attacking midfielder.

Missed the XI by one player... guess who :D

In all seriousness, hope Jesse shines tonight with his work rate and movement.

We'll be fine in the midfield I reckon. Wide areas though, they are considerably stronger.

This argument about Lingard providing some defensive cover does my head in.

First of all an attacker should be assessed and expected to be an attacker first meaning his offensive capabilities have to be a priority in whether they deserve to start.

Secondly the other players beside can also do their defensive duties with the added bonus of actually contributing in attack.

People have been brainwashed as to accept having a winger whose strongest attribute are defensive related rather than their offensive output.

Why should we always go into big games against rival or even teams inferior to us(no in this case) with a mindset to sideline some of our biggest attacking threats for defensive coverage. Every game we're expected to defend and sit back, can't even expect an ounce of positivity in our play. Down right frustrating.

Lingard has no argument to be starting over all those players far more deserving than him as attacking players. His offensive output are awful but this is Mourinho with his negative mindset.

And yes even if this was a game against Hull but a final Mourinho would have gone with a negative approach. We just can't expect going into game to enjoy them but just to bite nails for 90 minutes as we're defending narrow leads or draws.
You are kidding right? 2 trophies and UCL qualification all from a negative mindset? Maybe you should be praying for Klopp as manager

Slightly disappointed that Lingard still starts games for us as I think we should be aiming a bit better. However he does have a great knack of scoring in big games. Other than that, probably the strongest line we could play all things considered.
And you aren't wrong to think that. We had legends like Ronaldo, Beckham and Giggs running down the wings for us once. Lingard, as much as I love him as a squad player, should not be starting games for us when we have real talents such as Martial, and Rashford on the bench.

The build up in the posession is best with lingard in high pressure. Mkh is like a train wreck whi runs into high press and loose the ball , martial is frankly speaking not up to the mark in terms of positioning and movement and rashford is too direct and not creative.

In the match day thread? Lingard continually fails to vindicate his backers. I think they're the ones who need to improve the quality of their posts, or stop being precious about him.
Oooh that hurts! I see we're going to have some fun with you

Lingard is a surprise and rather disappointing inclusion. Not really been much from him in pre season. Good team otherwise.

comments like this let me know that the criticism for Lingard is just pure hate and nothing else. Lingard had a fantastic pre season. And then we get comments like this. :houllier:

I don't really like lingard but i understand why jose starts him not just coz of his defensive work but he makes runs all day which allows other attackers time and space on ball.

I have been very confident that we are going to win it, but seeing that Real lineup makes me feel different now. All best players they have in that 11 apart from Ronaldo. Still Isco and Bale are awesome players and if they need goals they can put on Ronaldo. Will be really difficult for us.

What makes me feel better is that our midfield is very strong. Can hopefully match them in that area. Lindelöf and Smalling as central defender against that Real attack doesn't make me feel confident though. Hopefully Bale is not in top form yet and without Ronaldo then that attack is not much better than ours (well Lukaku and Benzema).

Very curious to see if Lingard starts on the left (my guess) or Mkhitaryan.

Yes definitely. It's a shame he doesn't have more quality in the final third because he works so hard and creates space/finds pockets so well. He's like a poor mans Thomas Muller

We need a right winger who does a defensive job well when Valencia does his overlaps.

That was part of Lingard's jobs last season. I don't get how people still don't understand what Lingard's role is in the team.

I thought we'd go 4-3-3. 3-5-2 seemed risky give Madrid's pace in wide areas. Leaving space behind the wing back would've been an invitation to destruction. Our midfield is gonna have to get real busy though.

Can see the logic in starting Lingard. He's got good movement and he'll work back. I worry about Mhki. He needs to start fast. If he starts slowly I can see it being a difficult fixture for him. When it's not going for him Mhki can drift out of games.

We're going to be parking the bus and playing on the counter. Lingard does that job very well.

I am not going to say I like this in any way and I am not fond of Mourinho's selection choices but at the end of the day when we won the Europa League final I wasn't thinking 'it would have been better if Fellaini and Darmian didn't start'. I can't even remember the team that day but I remember is we won.
No he doesn't. Counter football actually requires players who have that final ball in them especially in fast transition which Lingard doesn't have.

He has no end product which makes this scenario of counter utterly useless with him.

So what happens? We get the ball, quick transition then Lingard's lack of end product to either put the ball in the net or the final pass let him down and that's that.

Lingard selection has always been annoying. We have defenders for defensive jobs. Attackers should always be selected based on the offensive abilities first not on how good defensively they are. Mourinho has to eventually cut out this shtick, makes us depressing and irritating to watch at times.

He link up well with the other players as well. Also been our best attacking player in pre-season.

Key for us today will be Pogba. I hope and think he can have a big game. With Matic and Herrera in midfield he should have more defensive cover and allow him to step up his attacking performance hopefully.

If bale plays on darmian side then he might struggle against his pace that's another reason why we are playing lingard even after he missed last 2 pre season matches
