He won't be mentioned because the midfield is unable to make a decent pass to him. Matic is playing as the 3rd CB.
Every time we have the ball in defense Matic drops. It is leaving our options to play the ball forward very limited as they drop deep.
    This is utter madness.
Yeah people will blame the midfield and so will I, but at the same time, martial doesn't inspire the confidence in the midfield as if he will get it, or come and help them. He's not a team player, the team have to play for him and that's his mindset.

Martial is literally hiding, no presence at all, barely touched it, barely ran, barely seen him.

No agenda, he’s just been shit.

Wan Bissaka is also not at his best. maybe should try Dalot who may be more attacking minded.

I actually think we are missing McTominay grabbing the game by the scruff of the neck and bringing it forward. Matic is way too slow, mostly a bystander. Fred a headless chicken, he needs MCT next to him to bail him out when he runs into trouble.

Neves, Bissouma, anyone could walk into this midfield and improve it.
    This.

About time McTerminator got some respect. ;)

Bad first half, a team selection i think could have been better, but still 45 mins to go. We scored 4 in that time last week.
We can't bank on the kind of naivety that Bielsa's Leeds always afford us. Sure, we can score 4 in a snap.........if every team is as reckless as Leeds. For every other team that is somewhat conservative, we have to be more realistic.

I have always found Ole too negative away from home with his team selections. Too worried about what opposing teams are going to do, as oppose to what we can do.
Having said that he went unbeaten away from home last season so what do i know.

Poor old OGS (not an Ole outer, but doubter)! No problem to bench Varane and Sancho but start Martial who didn't play for a while and being shite last season. A year later we don't even know what VdB could or couldn't bring to the team. The midfield performance today is shocking! What a mess!

Plays a DM with no legs against a team that is known for it's high intensity pressing. We are still so slow and predictable with our passing. Still so clueless wirh movement off the ball.

Another season of the same excuses, then
Same cloud looming over us. Why cant we just solve an issue or two out.

It’s not an agenda when it is demonstrably true.
I’m watching him stroll about, not pressing and not moving towards the ball to receive it.
    He is a handicap
He plays like Berba but he is not Berba. Even in duels you can see how he's not eager to put in an effort to win it. The only explanation other than laziness is that he's not fit or tired as feck. But I don't think that's the case.

It's the same thing, isn't it?

Regardless of how much quality the opposition have, if they're coached well to perform a high press, the triune Fred, Matic and McTominay inevitably cannot handle it, and consequently our forwards cannot get hold of the ball. It's been this way for years now, and of all the positions that go without recruitment, it's this one that's most frustrating.

Chelsea have Jorginho, Kovacic, and Mount who can play in a midfield and are technical enough to play in small spaces and deal with a heavy press.

City have Rodri, Gundogan, Fernandinho who can do it

    Liverpool with Thiago, Fabinho.

How do we not have someone capable of playing CM or DM who is both technical and press-resistant? Not one.
We're simply not going to win anything of significance with this midfield. Apparently we're only allowed to sign two players, so with that being said as much as i love the signing of Varane i would have preferred a midfielder. Because the ones we have are not good enough and are going to be another huge problem for us this season.

Easily the weakest midfield out of the top 4. Or top 6 for that matter.

Bruno showed too much of the ball, just had to move his body a bit to protect.

Fred and Matic are the problem though. It's so obvious Southampton want those 2 to get the ball and then they press. Easy tactics against us

The main problem was the lack of reaction to the goal, if anything we got worse once we conceded. Need to get our arse in gear 2nd half, start by taking Martial off for Sancho who’s been invisible and move Greenwood up top and we’ll see an improvement right away.
Agreed with the lack of reaction yeah. Seems we like to leave it for the second half to react.
Very rare to get a change by Ole on the start of the new half, but yeah Martial still very rusty.
Hopefully we will see Cavani for the last 20mins or so, or sooner if Greenwoods kicking boots don't click.

I'm afraid the issue against the press comes round and round again when we try to play the ball out from the back and are neither accurate nor quick with passing.

There is very little jeopardy for teams knowing they'll win possession on most instances rather than us cutting through.

Small gripe but why do sky end an ad break, return and tell us the score, then go to more ads?

Agree with your first comment but disagree about Martial, having Cavani or Greenwood up there would have made a big difference I feel, both of them will have got on the ball more than Martial. He's still lazy as ever
I’d say the only bad thing about Martial this game in comparison to greenwood is him not pressing aggressively enough.

Anyone that watched any of the pre season games could tell you that Martial is way off the pace yet he walks into the team some how? Can anyone explain?
He scored a great goal and provided an assist for Lingard in our last preseason game against Burnley. Why make things up?

We‘ve been dross and can’t pass or find a person to save our lives and can’t get the ball out of midfield unless it’s punted over the top to the wings? If your CF isn’t getting any good service at all and only little scraps how are they supposed to do anything.
