Won't happen, but I'd like to see us trying a midfield 3 of Fred, VDB and Bruno, with Pogba on the left and Sancho on the right.

I mean in theory yes but I don’t think it’s that likely that Lindelof suddenly becomes world class while Varane can’t push him out. Varane is a proven top class defender and not only that he offers certain attributes that we severely miss and could use. I think for what it’s worth Lindelof will still play at the weekend with a view to being in Varane either next week or after the international break.
Yeah Vik will mess up soon enough. But I like the idea that people play on merit. We had years of Rooney coasting on his reputation before Jose finally confronted him.

Surely the whole point is that Varane has to get his place on merit. If Lindelof suddenly becomes world class because of the competition then that's good. Didn't something similar happen to Shaw?
I'm sorry but the gulf in class between Lindelof and Varane is huge. Lindelof will never be world class, Varane already is. You can't really compare to the Shaw situations as Telles was bought to be the backup player to Shaw and Shaw was the better player out of the two.

I don't think you can run a football club like that. As Glazed said above, that's how you get players coasting on reputation and staying in the starting 11 when they're not performing. Varane is better so trust that he'll get his chance soon and take it when he does. What's the harm in that?

It would be the surprise of the decade if Lindelof kept Varane out of the first XI. But he has the right to try

I can see Southampton being the whipping boys this season. Really poor defence, should be a show by our attackers again.

Much more confident for this game than I was for Leeds, and that turned out well. No need to change it up too much, Sancho for James being most likely. Really need Varane to be 100% ready for whenever his first game is.

It's not the easiest situation to handle, there's pros and cons with instantly throwing Varane in.

Most likely he'll be our first choice cb next to Maguire, and given the schedule we have in October->November (Leicester, Liverpool, Tottenham, City, Watford, Chelsea, Arsenal), it would be a decent idea to get him adjusted to the league asap.

Lindy performed well against Leeds, even came up with an assist...Ole needs to read the situation correctly

Could be a touch too soon for Varane. Only been training with the squad a few days so it depends on his level of fitness first and foremost. I think Sancho in for James is more likely, but he may be limited to an hour or so to get him up to speed.

We should be burying these. They've lost their best defender and main goal threat. We still need to be wary of giving away set-pieces in and around the box with JWP in their team.

    0-3 win for United

There's no reason not to start Sancho and would love to see Donny get a start against a team who will setup not to lose. As good a time as ever to see how one holding might pan out for the season.

    DDG
    AWB Lindelof Maguire Shaw
    Matic
    Bruno Pogba

This post makes no sense. Did you forget to put him in or something?

It's going to be kinda tough on Lindelof, when he gets subbed off for Varane, some time in the 2nd, half, never to be seen again, until the League Cup games.

He's been pretty solid and reliable, all told. Great to have as the 3rd choice defender.

I think Sancho will start having had a bit longer with the team. Not sure about Varane, might be seen as too soon.

Would be very happy to contribute to Ralph Hassenhuttl getting off to a bad start this season. He always seems to have negative comments about Man United, and the media love him for some reason.

Southampton like to press high, so similar tactics to Leeds from us I'd think. McFred in the middle, Pogba on the left.

I wonder if Sancho / Cavani will come in for James.

Sancho yes, Cavani I doubt. But they would brick it if he comes on at half time after last season!!

Don't care about pivots and presses and all that other crap. Just win and don't let last week's result be a damp squib.

I think he'd probably go with McTominay rather than Fred in a scenario like this, but I don't think it's too far off. Strikes me as an easy way to play a more "attacking" set-up against weaker sides set up defensively. Most people would probably just want to see Pogba drop deeper, but until Rashford comes back I think playing VDB and Pogba together could be a nice solution.

Bets on which twunt will give away a cheap free kick on the edge of the box for Ward-Prowse to score from. I'm going with Lindelof.

The United of the past few years would absolutely smash one game and then either tie or lose the next one to bring everyone back down to earth. One step forward and two steps back. Let’s see if we have taken that next step and if we can continue this momentum up until the international break and go 3 for 3.

He had a go at us for celebrating after a last minute winner and I think he had a few cheeky words after they had their last minute equaliser the year before. Definitely something in it

I’m really excited for this. Wish it was on tomorrow really as the Leeds game has just given the club such a feel good factor. Hope we can carry it on this weekend and put a poor Southampton team to the sword. Hoping Sancho starts and looks the part and I’d love to see Varane play too!
