It is amazing how much 1 game can make, pre-season was great, but 1 defeat and the fell good factor has all but disappeared.

I hope a full week in training can cure any hangover, and start the season again away from Old Trafford!

    Rooney - Januzaj
    Mata
    Herrara - Fletcher
    Young --------------------- Rafael
    Blackett - Smalling - Jones
    DDG
Could easily switch to 4231 with the same players, Januzaj and Young flanking Mata, Raf and Blackett the FBs.

Hopefully Rafael (or Valencia even) is back for this one - we really need proper wing-backs available.

Give Januzaj a free reign up front.

There's no real alternative to Fletcher in CM at the moment...
I would play this team as well . But id have Kagawa starting ahead of Mata.

We know if RvP is likely to be fit enough for this yet? LvG openly said he wouldn't be playing saturday so don't know if he's meant to be this week. Would be nice to see him back.

Van Gaal said RvP would be back available for selection very soon either before or after the Swansea game, don't remember. Think he'll be fine to start on Sunday. Sub at least.

The sort of game we'd go behind twice in, before our strikers score a few to win the game with this squad under Sir Alex.
And we'd go behind, equalise, and go onto lose under Moyes.

Either way, these types of games have become harder and harder for us recently. We're lucky if we outplay and out-pass them these days, so I'll take a win however it comes. Two defeats would be beyond a disaster. I'm not filled with much confidence, but we still have match winners. I'd love to see cohesion and fluidity without us looking like conceding to every counter attack.

Not sure how long Evans is out for but if he is fit I would throw him back in. Get some experience in there. Was not overly impressed with 3-5-2 formation on Saturday as it looked like the defenders were still unsure of whether to go or stay, who to pick up etc. But as we have been playing it in pre-season I guess we have to stick with it.

Am seeing so many lineups including Fletcher, am I the only one who thought he was feckin useless against Swansea? I am not disputing that he is a great guy but he genuinely looks a shadow of himself. Every pass went backwards and he gave it away often. I don't rate Cleverley at all but he has to be in ahead of Fletch IMO

I doubt Evans will be ready for this. You have all our injured players and RVP in that lineup, you know theres a big chance none of them play. I'd replace Evans with Blackett, Rafael with Lingard and RVP with Kagawa

I hope we play two defensively-sound wingbacks as opposed to players such as Lingard and Young, even if they aren't as good going forward. We need players with good defensive awareness, in my opinion, to succeed with this formation. But then I guess we haven't got much choice at left wingback seeing as Shaw is injured and question marks over whether James is good enough for the Premier League just yet.

It's 6 days until the game so Rojo could easily be in contention by then for left wing back or left centre back.

Ah, Rojo can play in that position? I didn't realise that. Hopefully we'll have the deal wrapped up by then.
By the sound of things, the deal is wrapped up. A confirmation is all that's left.

Please dear God let this happen.
I would still put Jones in for Blackett, but otherwise, would be quite happy.

I think Blackett will remain in the team for now. If Rojo is deemed ready I reckon we'll see him left wing-back.

Not sure if Rojo will start, think it's more likely he'd be a sub. Van Gaal seems like the manager who wants them to train a bit with the team before throwing them in. Anyways, Blackett was decent enough and we'll have Rafael back I think.

Agreed. We've seen what happens when the defenders in this system aren't all on the same page, knowing what he has to be doing in the system seems more important than his ability at first. Still, would love to see something of him sooner rather than later.

Just think that LVG is too stubborn to change his system right now, as I still think that we'll begin the game in a 3-5-2. We'll probably have Rafael back, and if Jonny Evans manage to came back it would be a great news too

But Sunderland is always always a difficult place to go

I know. It is so depressing. Looking on physio room it suggests that RVP is back and I also think that LVG said he may be ready. I would hate for us to lose twice in a week and potentially be 6 points behind the leaders already after two games. For that reason, if RVP is fit, I would put him straight back in. The others I have no idea about as they have no return date.

In case all the players I have mentioned are injured I would go with

    ------------------------------De Gea---------------------------
    ---------------Jones---------Smalling-----------Blackett---------
Young----------------Fletcher--------Herrera---------------Rojo (looks like it will be completed)
    -------------------------------Mata-----------------------------

There are very few football matches nowadays where I see us as favourites. Any sort of win will be fantastic here.

Even if any deals are done this week, I doubt we'll see any debuts, I think the League Cup on Tuesday is more likely for that, in addition to Persie starting.

Just please no 3-5-2, although if Nani leaves we may not have enough wingers. I'd start Danny left and go 4-3-3 still anyway.

It'll be interesting to see if we stick with the 3-5-2 despite playing better when we switched formations. Anyway, this isn't the team I am expecting but it is the team I would be playing (assuming plaayers are fit...which is a big IF):

    ------------------ De Gea -------------------
    ------ Jones ------ Smalling ------ Evans------
Rafael----- Fellaini ----- Herrera ----- Young
    ------------------- Mata -------------------
    -----------Welbeck ----- Rooney ------------

You guys did have a great away record last season, and I don't think you guys will make it two losses in a row.

I am starting to wonder this as well. Mata just isn;t showing enough to be a starter.
Competition for that place can only be good for the squad. If he started with Kagawa against Sunderland, it would make Kagawa feel like he has a chance an it would encourage mata to come back stronger

Does anyone know how close RVP is to full fitness? And welbeck for that matter.. I fear the worst if we have neither of them, Hernandez just slows down our play and absolutely useless on the ball :(

This is RVP's 3rd week of training. Januzaj was on the bench against Swansea after 3 weeks of training plus the 20 minutes of gametime against Valencia. I expect RVP to come off the bench.

Would you really start with Fellaini? Already in the first game he has swung his arm at somebody and could have got sent off. I do not think it is worth the risk of us going down to 10 men, especially as Sunderland will be fired up for this game as its their first home game of the season.

Based on the fact it is their first game I would suggest packing the midfield. Play a 3 with Fletcher, Herrera and Rooney. RVP up top on his own with Adnan and Young on the wings

I agree, except I think it should be Januzaj not Kagawa that gives Mata cause for concern for the 10 spot.

Thats a strong lineup. Mata and Fletcher need to up the ante. They were very disappointing against Swansea. I also hope Kagawa gets some involvement if Mata's poor from carries on to this game.

Any formation that doesn't see Adnan start this game will be a disappointment to me. I really think we need to make the most of him.

Januzaj aint a 10 though, his decision making and awareness needs to be improved if he's to play that role.
Nevertheless, he can play as one of the 2 forwards, alas Robben's role for Holland.

he played as a ten right up until joining the senior team last year. i think most would agree that he's very much a 10 of the future, though of course there's debate as to whether he's ready for that position on a regular basis at this time.
