It's hard to believe he's the same player we saw for most of last season and the start of this season.

The complete 180 in his form is incredible.
Said it before that he and Rashford are the most improved players under Ole. Some might said Pogba, but I've known all along that he's world class that was just shackled.

The perfect example of 'having a season to settle yourself' being a thing. Brilliant player and imo the 2nd best CB in the league.
That is possible because he plays lots of games. How do you settle when sitting on the bench?

So you think his shortcomings last season was due to lack of game time? You think he wasn't winning as much headers in the air in comparison to this season because he wasn't playing enough?

Can we safely expect Victor to be a tier 1 defender now? potentially.

I think he can. Love him to bits.

Credits to the scouting team who found him first.

Imagine if Lindelof was signed by Liverpool/City. VVD and Lindelof, my god.

What the actual feck happened to him? There's players taking time to settle and turning it around but this guy literally showed absolutely nothing to suggest he'd be anything more than a bit part player at best. Stunning turn around.

He was good last season as well in many games but people just ignore that, he showed signs before as well.

Not sure it was even the scouting team that found him.

In the last couple of games together, Smalling hasnt made many headers and Lindelof has made more than him. I like this it shows he's much more solid in this area now

He’s improved his heading but still need to improve more. There’s a reason they send Smalling up on attacking corners/freekicks and Lindelof often stays home to defend.
He needs to be even more active with the ball at times. Also a little bit more aggressiveness in certain situations even though he’ll never be a Vidic. Strength, toughness and “dirtyness” of course. He is still lacking in alot of areas.

He’s a different kind of defender from what ive used to so it took time until I got it. I’m sure you will too Ekeke. It’s his calmness, reading of play, passing, football IQ, positional play that makes him stand out. But he’ll improve all things above I think with age, experience and hard work. I think he’s got the potential to be really good. And I mean really really good.

Who found him then? Mourinho?
That’s what Jose implied when he spoke about the Portuguese market, his understanding of it and the contacts he has there. He mentioned Dalot as well.

I mean Smalling has a very good goalscoring record so he'll always be sent up for set pieces. Theres no shame in that from the other CB not being as big of a threat, though obviously if we can have another CB who gets some goals with some consistency then its good.

But I'll settle right now for what I think we're seeing, which is that what used to be an outright weakness for Lindelof is now a fairly solid part of his game and we can trust him with balls in the air.

Positioning? Thats still a question mark for me. There have been plenty of occasions where an opposition player has run in behind him and Lindelof has had some trouble. I dont think its a weakness but I dont see it as his strength either. Smalling on the other hand never seems to have an issue with this because of his natural defending ability and instinct to take up the right positions.

Was in beast mode today against attackers who like to play on the ground but also held his own when the big Liverpool cbs came up for corners
I'm quite sure he didn't mark their CB on corners. I think we had Smalling on Van Dijk and McTominay on Matip. I took notice, because I didn't know the coaching team rated McTominay's aerial abilities that highly (like, second best in our lineup).

Anyway, not to take anything away from a great performance. I'm so happy he's turned it around and we got a Scandinavian in the United lineup again. He took so much stick in his first season here and to come out on top like this.. Wow.

Lindelof seem to drop back alot. He doesn’t rush himself into situations but always takes safety first. And often he let the attacker make his move and even take the shot. Bothered me at first, still does at times where I think he could be more aggressive but I think he does it on purpose. I’m sure de Gea and Lindelof has talked about him covering one area and give attackers opportunity to take a shot in an area where de Gea is expecting the shot.

There will always be situations where attackers run past him. Happens to both Smalling and Lindelof and I don’t think he’s had more problem with that than Smalling. He definitely brings more calmness and structure to the defense than the other centrebacks. If the opposition want to score they have to make a really good play. They don’t get cheap goals as much as they would with Smalling and another CB. Thats what I mean with positional play.

Fantastic again. Calm, composed, always in control. Totally different player to that of last season.

He makes defending look easy.

I barely even noticed the usually dominant Smalling, which says a lot about Lindelof's performance. He made nine clearances and won three aerial duels. Smalling made two clearances and won 0 aerial duels. Shaw, Young and McTominay had 5, 6 and 3 clearances too.

He is having great season and one more very good game.

He is looking like a bargain signing now.

I'm so fecking pleased he is proving me wrong, and I will never get tired of saying so. Good game again, looking very solid and getting forward with the ball on occasions.

He was not as bad as portrayed last season. If people actually took the blinkers off, they would realise he had a pretty decent second half to the season, last year.

To think that people wrote him off during his first few months!

I don't agree with that. He showed he had the ability to make it here and his shortcomings were perhaps overplayed on the basis of how poor we had looked as a defensive unit over the last year. We defend more aggressively and look to give more options when playing out from the back and that change has suited him down to the ground.

The 30 million we paid for Victor is looking a steal right now. Hope he continues to improve.

Agreed. He was wrongly written off after a couple of shaky games in a new, much more physical league.

Sensational, and obviously the game time and run in the team has helped. Hes been allowed to get into form, and continue it. Hes improved other factors too like going for headers and it will help him long term having a consistent defensive partner rather than it changing nearly every game.

What has happened to this guy?

Has went from looking shaky and weak under Mourinho to commanding, confident and classy. MOTM for me.

Had a couple of off moments himself tonight that were a bit sloppy, possible fatigue setting in, but overall he turned in a solid performance.

I liked his distribution tonight. Several times he came up with a nice pass to start an attack. Got an assist for Lukaku's 2nd goal. One careless moment at 1-2 when he got robbed of possession in our half, giving them the chance to counter.

He's turning into Mr Reliable for us. And when you play like that, you can be forgiven for some minor mistakes... if any at all.

He had already improved under Mourinho. Been great since his horror cameo vs Spurs.

He is now mr consistent. I think we only need one more WORLD class central defender, and we will be ok with Smalling as a back up.

Have just realized that Lindelof made an assist to Lukaku for the 2nd goal. Need to increase his rating by 1 notch now, is it possible to do?
