Ally McCoist brings a bit of humour to the game whenever he’s involved. I do like Drury too, he has a good habit of radiant the hairs on your arms.

The very best football commentator absolutely has to be Alan Green.
Yes he had some faults.
But for pure passion and the ability to describe what was going on, he is the very best. Second would be Mike Ingham. Both iconic football comments.

I grew up listening to David Coleman and Kenneth Wolstenholme who were both excellent commentators. They wouldn't be constantly chattering but would punctuate the game where necessary. Coleman could handle a major football match or an Olympic final and bring the same quality to each event. He did drop a few clangers though and even had his own dedicated column in Private Eye for a few years.

We used to get John Helm here for CL games. He is the voice I associate with our 99 CL campaign, so I’ll always have fond memories of him as a commentator. I wanted to share something epic, but I’ll instead post this one:

I don’t think there are very many really insightful co commentators out there and he likes United so he gets a pass from me. I can’t stand jenas, he drives me mad.
You know how during matches you always think certain commentators are biased against United especially if we're losing. But after you realize they're just doing their job.

But Jenas doesn't even try to hide it, he clearly despises United. And it's odd because I can't quite figure out why, he never player for one of our rivals or even a top club competing for titles at any point in his career.

Andy Gray. Tyler has never been the same since he left.

Ingham or Drury, Tyler was good but he's gone on to long just like Motson did

I don’t like any of them. They all seem to hate us even more than the refs do.

This thread has reminded me of Radio 5 when Alan Green and Mike Ingham used to share commentary duties ... one doing the first half of a half and the other doing the second. Didn’t think anything of it back in the day but, now I think about it, never heard that happen anywhere else.

Easily the best I have ever heard. Cannot believe he hasn't been mentioned more but he retired in the mid-1990's I think (1994 WC Final was his last game?).

He did the ‘98 World Cup as well. His voice carried a lot of gravitas and you associated him with the games where the stakes were highest.

Otherwise the same as others - Barry Davies, Peter Brackley, Gerald Sindstat, Clive Tyldsley, Rob Palmer, Tyler and Gray. David Begg was fantastic and I used to feel sorry for the listeners on Radio 5 hearing the English card when Begg was injecting all this energy, presence and accuracy into what we were listening to north of the border.

Andy Gray and Martin Tyler combo. Simply the best. The raw passion in Gray’s scottish voice is just so suited to football.

Peter Drury by a mile. I like my smart quips. Then the Tyler-Gray combination. On the opposite side, I always found Motty awful. I could never understand how he became a fixture in the trade.

Besides the obvious Martin Tyler, I loved Peter Brackley. A great mix of calm commentary during low periods of the game mixed with excitement at goals or actions, nostalgia factor is there from watching clips of older matches and ofcourse Pro Evo during it's heyday in the 00's.

John Helm as well covering World Cups.

Shout out to Alan Parry top veteran commentator.

Must've commentated on thousands of United games, you'd never guess he was a massive Liverpool fan though. Top Pro.

Also liked Tony Gubba (RIP) distinctive voice, remember him from Match Of the Day and the early Pro Evolution Soccer games on PS1 :)

Never knew Tim Caple's name so I just googled it and you are spot on, he is really good. I feel like he also used to do a lot of random tournaments like u21 Euros and stuff that would be on Eurosport.
