Dutch coaches love a left-footed LCB. Ten Hag was even willing to try Telles there. So only a matter of time till we sign this guy.

It’s abit of a luxury buy when we still have four centrebacks at the club, isn’t it?
I'd genuinely forgotten Lindelof for a moment. But you can't really count on Bailly and Jones, we've had years to understand that.
Varane probably misses 30% of the season too, and Maguire had a stinker last season too.

Pay Torres is a much better option. It’s a shame we aren’t interested.
Apparently Ten Hag said he doesn't want Pau, but wants Lisandro.

Tbh I don't disagree with that. Pau Torres for me always looks way too soft. He's tall, but lanky, and reminds me of Lindelof basically (except Lindelof is used to the premier league). Martinez is known for being aggressive and is on another level with his playing out from the back.

It is clear to me that this is going to happen for a while. I actually thought it would happen from the minute United got involved, but after United bid €45m I was already convinced it was a matter of time. I did not think Ajax would stand firm like this though. As an Ajax fan I like that a lot and Ajax have every right to. However we're clearly getting to the end game now. Ajax 'conceding' that a deal can be discussed as long as the required fee is paid up and United now coming out they don't want to pay too much. These are nothing more than the last skirmishes before the agreement is eventually reached. In the end it will be something like 50m + 5/6 add ons. Then Ajax can say it stood firm and United can say we didn't offer much more than Ajax said it would require as a minimum (50m guaranteed).

Martinez will be a United player soon, unless Arsenal does something crazy.

Not if he wanted both, he wouldn't. We're thin on personnel and cannot draft in pure specialists when there are so many holes to fill. I doubt it's a coincidence that Timber could also play multiple roles, which makes him doubly useful went unnoticed, either.

And him being primarily a CB doesn't have to mean right now rather than when the manager can pad out the squad as he desires.
There are few specialists in ETH team. Alvarez can play as CB as well

Wardrobe.
I think this will happen and I expect Jones to finally leave the club. I wouldn't be surprised if Bailly leaves too. I would suspect Tuanezebe will either go out on loan or get sold and Mengi should probably go on loan again.

It's the United way.

New manager -> Buys expensive CB to fix defensive -> Wonders why nothing changes when we have no DM

Primary to switch the play From left to right
Quickly especially with Martinez long range diagonal passing

Need a defender who plays on the front foot, be the aggressor. The first half today shows how we open we can be cause of the gap with the midfield pressing and defenders not being aggressive enough to close the space down ahead of them allowing Carvalho and Elliot to run at them.

Bailly in the second half was doing well in that role. But then again we were a playing a lot deeper with the inexperienced side out.

Martinez if he comes in will give us both of that and the ball playing LCB which EtH likes

In some ways this is an understandable position, but when you get into the nuance of our centre back situation things start to unravel pretty quickly. It appears we have numbers but not any consistent quality or reliability. There is nobody I could hang my hat on and say "he is definitely having a good season."

I would guess ETH was pretty concerned with an influx of quality into the spine of our side, i.e. in midfield and centre back. With an attacker or two likely to come.

Is this chap really only 5'9" or is someone playing silly buggers on wiki?

I know Cannavaro was similarly teeny but he'd be the shortest CB in the Prem at that height I would imagine.

Might have already been discussed on every single page of this thread.

Maybe I’m reading too much into this but Ten Hagg said he’s looking to strengthen midfield and attack. We’ve been linked with Martinez, De Jong, Eriksen, Antony.

Does this suggest he sees Martinez as midfield, specifically a CDM?
It’s been posted here numerous times quoting ETH as saying Martinez is not good enough to be a DM

He's going to be slightly under average for a DM.

Think he’s 5’9 and a quarter from memory. 6 foot in studs with an elevator heel.

Not when Bailly and jones are always injured, Lindelof and Varane are often injured, none of them left footed, only Maguire being a true ball playing CB and not being as good as Martinez at it. The build up would be hugely changed with him (and Frenkie). Bailly isnt a serious option with his fitness record and consistency, jones never plays, so we just have to sell them off and then go forwards with a group of 4 who is actually diverse enough and stay fit (and fit the manager!). Left footed CB a must among that group. Also their ages. Lindelof is our youngest CB, and he's about to turn 28 in a few days. We need a big makeover with our defender group the next few years.

Short arse DMs are the best DMs.

Short arse CBs in the Prem are rarer than rocking horse turds.
I am intrigued to see him played there, look if it doesn't suit then time to get behind him being a relatively short CB albeit quality on the ball.

Just can’t really get excited about this, just doesn’t feel like a priority whatsoever. Might look better at the end of the window when all business is said and done.

This has flop written all over it. I think Erik is massively underestimating the physical nature of the PL. A 5’9 centre back is going to get absolutely mullered on a weekly basis. It doesn’t matter how good he is on the ball he’s going to be such an obvious target for the opposition.

For £50 odd million too, when we are working to a budget and are desperately short in midfield and in attack. Just doesn’t make sense at all. So many red flags with this signing.
