He's our best football player, and its not particularly close either.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time

Yep, and has been for years. The only thing holding him back is that he's been somewhat inconsistent, with some poor seasons in between the good ones. But in terms of pure ability he's the only player we've got who is arguably the best in the world for his position.

I don't really get the praise, he is excellent technically, one of the best in the world at it, but he is basically defensive Martial. He is literally walking the entire game. Even the defending for the first goal was half arsed. That's not the way how world class players in world class teams play.

He has the skill but is consistently lazy. When these are the leaders in the team it's no surprise we are so trash.

Gotta say I agree. Would think he was bombing forward owning it or something based on how some are talking. Hardly remember him getting forward and considering our huge possession numbers in the first half he was a huge part in our slowness. Too many back passes, too much laxness from him. He can provide so much more going forward than he did today

I wouldn't go that far.
I think he plays better with Martinez beside him though.
He's an excellent crosser though and very good technically

I agree with this. Our fans standards are so low these days, it’s hard to comprehend at times.

Shaw at his best was making constant overlapping runs, he rarely does that now, yet people saying he was “really good”. Madness.

Said before but he now plays the left back role like a centre back would.

But his defending on the first goal was terrible. That pass amd Bowens run you could see coming from a mile away but he's so switched off he doesn't react till its too late.

Shaw was marking another player. Bowen was Mainoo's man. But probably Shaw could do better there.

Best among the dross. Is good enough if your goal is to finish top 4 here and there. If you want to challenge for title or win it , guys like him would have long gone.

I am not saying he played great or anything but he was our only starting player on the pitch yesterday who looked as he might have the needed quality. The others were either youngsters or just not good enough.

Thought he was our best player by quite a bit. Pretty much the only one that looked like a United player. I would 100% not trust this club to let him leave and sign a better player.

Probably the only player in this team that doesn’t give his manager a hard time. He is consistent, composed on the ball, tracks forward and backwards well, adds numbers in midfield when going forward, responds positively to being played as CB. No fuss about him, the first name on my team sheet

If you go back a split second before that Mainoo is marking that man and pointing at Bowen. Shaw just stood in space, not doing anything. Despite Mainoo pointing and Bowen being the clear threat, Shaw just doesn't recognise what's about to happen. For some reason he picks up the man Mainoo already has instead of Bowen.

I get people saying his quality is there. His touch yesterday was very good. His passing decent. But since he's come back from injury he's now cost us at least three goals with lazy, switched off defending.

Was Mainoo marking that man (not Bowen)? That was some marking if true.

It's obvious Mainoo fecked it up. No need to deny it. He's young and not really a defensive player.

Is it?

You've watched the footage so yeah you know just before that, as the ball is coming to Paqueta, Shaw is ball watching, flat footed, marking nobody. If I knew how to insert a pic I would, but as I say, you've watched it.

Your images are as or after the ball is being played. Any defender knows its too late to switch on at that point.

Just came here to say I think he's been by far our best player. Doesn't really ever do anything wrong in a terrible team.

If it is minor and he just misses a game I don't see why it's such a big issue? Players miss games due to knocks all the time.

Agree with you. Shaw is a very good player but a fairly average, at best, defender.

Probably because he misses games quite often. Combined with some poor forms now and then, and you have very talented but very unreliable player that won't get you too far.

He was arguably our best player against West Ham and looked like the Shaw of yesteryears and then he misses this game with minor injury due to I'm guessing his exertion in that game. It's just typical unfortunately.

Always injured. I love him, but maybe we do need to look at a replacement. I like the look of Fernandez and apparently Amass is a great talent. How is Malacia still not fit as well?

He's no way near as good as people think he is and rarely available anyway

We need a serious left back but there's so many other positions in the squad that need prioritizing first

Needs to be demoted to back up. Hes never fit.
This forum over rated him to ridiculous levels. Hes been either injured or average for us far more than he’s been good.

Shaw's availability has always been his biggest problem but there's not a chance that he's average. He's still our best player when fit. It's a shame because last season he managed to stay mostly injury free.

Our recruitment, as ever, has let us down in his position. If we had recruited a solid deputy we'd be alright in his absence, he's probably seen off about 10 different players in that position since he joined the club now.

I've always rated Shaw, but I'm losing patience with him and others due to injuries and stupid little illnesses. That's without even mentioning performances.

I'm torn with how I want this to play out, but something needs to happen. There are a few different options as I see it.

1) Sign a top left back and let the two of them jostle it out.

2) Keep Shaw, but with the view of putting our utmost faith in Alvaro Fernandez as his eventual successor.

3) Sell Shaw, sign his replacement and use maybe Alvaro Fernandez as the deputy.

Also, I'm a big fan of Harry Amass from the academy. Still only 16, but I'd like to see him get an opportunity in the next couple of years.

We have so many issues that this will probably not be looked at but we do need to start looking at potential new LBs. This is simply not sustainable anymore.

When you’re criticising Shaw you know the whole squad needs binning. He’s our best player.

We are stucked with Luke Fatshaw for 3 years more. No club in the world would pay his wages (hopefully I'm wrong and the Saudis are that stupid).

Not a bad shout to say when fit he's generally our most consistent player. He doesn't have the massive highs and lows of Bruno, very good defensively, for me he's easily the best on the ball in the squad when it comes to control and technique. Defensively one of our top players.
