Did his thing on the pitch in red. I couldn't give a toss that he hated Britain. I think it was a crazy mistake not making his deal with us permanent
I'm not comfortable with it, I'd not want to make a living in China, Saudi etc, so I'd never work there.
Also he rejected United's offer

He didn't reject Uniteds offer. We balked at the price from his 3rd party owners because Tevez had told Ferguson he wanted to retire early. Which he ended up not doing!

As for your comfort levels, you're barking if you think that matters a jot to anyone else. Hating the British government doesn't stop most people earning money inside Britain. I did for many years.

There is a David Gill podcast on Rio's channel where he said we activated the option to buy him but Gill suspects city offered the 3rd party more money so he went there.

Mokbel & Whitwell, highly reliable.

I really like Toney - but the guy is 28 in march. Signing a playing in his late 20's for a lot of money is something you can do if you are a few pieces left to truly compete or if you have a lot of money to spend. Not when we are where we are. Would Toney strengthen us ? Yes - but I can imagine 4-5 equally good players who probably will cost a lot less.

Yeah he feels very much like someone signed when you have all the other squad pieces in place

If we played a kind of 4-4-2 with Toney in the team instead of Rashford I think we probably score more and would look more solid. He's right footed and good in air so gives us something new. He's got a bit of arrogance. It gives us tactical flexibility, a high standard of competition in the squad and more than adequate backup for an ambitious club. So all positive for me. He’d be signing on the understanding it’s up to him to oust Rasmus and not the other way around. I don’t think he worth anything close to 100 million though. I like him as a player but I would be looking to find another really promising player for less fee/wages and with less baggage

I think it would be deeply stupid for us to spend 100 million on Toney. He could easily relapse and get banned again, there must be a better use of the money than that.

It would be stupid to spend 100 m on Toney period you don't have to add caveat he is good but not that good , he will move for around 60 m that's my guess .

He has scored 35 goals in 70 PL matches for a club like Brentford. Mo Salah has scored 33 goals in his last 58 goals for Liverpool. So he is THAT good. But he is 28 in the summer and he will cost a lot of money. But he will easily get 15-20 league goals for us - maybe more than 20 for a club like Arsenal

He has scored 11 goals from penalties as well and his first season in Epl was just about ok ,for me he isn't even close to 100 m player .

You say this as if Salah hasn't also taken 11 PL penalties in the same time period and just been worse at them.

I seriously doubt he's going for £100m and I'd be surprised if he ends up here, but Toney is a damn good player even aside from his goalscoring. He should probably do something about his name because it's clearly too boring.

We're not burning 100m on him - we're just not. The whole idea of INEOS coming in is to fix the various parts of the footballing side of the club and they have already said their first focus is player recruitment and retention since it was an area they felt they could improve massively quickly.

I'm pretty sure that means not buying overpriced players who are the current flavour of the month that agents are trying to instigate a bidding war for and instead seeking deals for players using their network of contacts. I really hope the days of having our pants pulled down and bank accounts drained by every other club are now over.

I remember when we signed Chicarito and noone had ever heard of him and he was immense.

You can't seriously want Toney. Completely the wrong profile of player.

Weirdly, I was just thinking that we've had too many M's and French players who wind up unavailable more often than not. Maybe our transfer strategy would be better off being outlined by a process of elimination?

Striker wanted. Frenchman, or people with 'ton' or 'm' in their name, need not apply. Ability preferable but not essential.

Probably best not to mention the canteen if we want to attract candidates

Tier 2:

Slightly more info:
  • Varane stayed at United in January as he wants to see out his contract with the club.
  • McTominay's contract runs out next year, but United have a 1-year club option that they can trigger.
  • Both Heaton's and Brandon Williams' contracts end this summer.
EDIT: Correction on Brandon Williams + more info on Heaton
  • Heaton's contract has a 1-year option
  • Brandon Williams' contract ends next summer, and it also has a 1-year option

Remember when we rejected bids for Williams then plonked him on a £60k a week contract? Good times

Nothing will ever top the Phil Jones one, everyone's sheer disbelief at it. I'm not even sure he ever made another appearance after signing it.

Nah I didn't say he was my first choice - I was merely pointing out that he was a very good player in response to another poster who claimed he wasn't. If Toney was 3-4 years younger and our cash-situation wasn't what it is - then maybe. But we can't sign players at 28+ for God knows...£60-70 million ? Unless they are almost guaranteed to be a huge hit

All the best goalscorers in the P.L have a lot of penalties - and 24 in 70 from open play is still a hell of a lot better than what we have at the moment. But just to clarify- that doesn't mean I want us to sign him

if Xabi goes to Liverpool you can bet he will raid his former club of their better players which would include these two guys
i thought that was a sign of a manager who hasnt a clue what he's doing. Or is that just when ten hag does it
