The midfield ideally is one where there's a midfielder at the base of the midfield as the #6. A midfielder who is box to box and also can drop deeper in the build up phase with the 3rd midfielder being the attacking midfielder.
So what we're missing is the #6 to balance things out with Mainoo in a box to box role where he drops deeper in the build up phase and pushes higher up when we advance over the half way line with Mount as the attacking midfielder.
So you have a #6 who sits deeper and stays positionally disciplined. #6/#8 who comes deeper in the build up phase but advances forward and a #8/#10 who is afforded a little bit more freedom higher up the pitch.
On paper the midfield three below looks balanced and I'd also add someone like Amadou Onana to that because he can be utilised in all three roles in his own unique way and has the ability to play on the turn, dribble and pass under pressure whilst raising the level by dominating the aerial and ground duels. He's not someone who will dictate a game but he looks as if he has the ability to make the system click.
#6 - Alan Varela
#6/#8 - Mainoo
AM - Bruno, Mount, Amad
I think Amad in a advanced central attacking role could have potential as
@dutchred alluded to in his post above. And if you can also have the option of someone like Amadou Onana to provide variety and depth to the midfield positions where he can be utilised in all three roles, then I think that would be good options going into next season as far as the composition of the midfield is concerned.
And then I want to see who the CBs are going into next season and it'll be interesting to see who we sign and what happens with Wily Kambwala who is of the correct profile but may need a loan.
