We would ditch Mainoo in a heartbeat if FDJ became available. He was ETH’s most wanted player when he joined and he would still love him here I bet. Don’t think we can get him though, he wants to be at Barca too much.

I agree completely, and my opinion comes with the understanding that De Jong would be replacing Mainoo in the first eleven.
I don't think we want to go into next season planning on having an 18/19 year old be the assumed starting #8 for 50+ matches. It was never the ideal scenario for him to be a regular starter this season, and the only reason he has become one is because our options at the position are so lackluster.
In a perfect, unrealistic world, we could sign De Jong and Camavinga, who seems like he's going to be the odd man out at Madrid, and have a midfield three of Camavinga, De Jong, and Bruno.
On the contrary, I think de Jong would help Mainoo massively. Any young player should watch the way de Jong moves with the ball, and the way he positions his body when shielding it from opposition players and when he does his turns. Mainoo seeing that up close in training and when potentially playing together in games can only be beneficial.
We are the opposite, we absolutely leave our defence exposed continuously.
As far as he's been in Barcelona, he's been terrible defensively.

We will, but I think sir Jim is looking to redefine what is considered a ‘blockbuster signing’. I don’t think we will be in the market for over-the -hill galacticos any longer.
Agreed. Under Sir Alex, our blockbuster signings could be classified as the top rated proven players (Berbatov, Veron, RVP) or the top bracket of exciting young talents (Ronaldo, Rooney, Rio). I hope that under this new regime, it's the latter for the next few years until we have a stable enough team which is just missing that one luxury signing to propel us further.
This is a non-starter. We will not make any big money signings for at least the next 4-5 years. New stadium coming up, history of being burnt on big money deals and new management will be cautious.

I highly doubt it'll be 4-5 years. One or two makes sense, maybe even three, but I can't see it being more than that. By that point we should (at least in theory) have improved our squad depth and quality enough that we can then start being more picky and targeting one or two big signings a season if the right player is there.
No but there arent many midfielders who play like him and are as good as he is. He is pretty unique.
With Mainoo coming up, I am not really keen on him anymore. Invest in a solid DM who can cover lot of spaces and sign some upcoming cheap options .

Agreed. I think Mainoo can be as good if not better, given time, patience, support and luck injury wise.
I think it's still a bit early in his career to see what his ceiling is but he's definitely got the tools. I think the one thing he doesn't quite have is De Jong's ability to drive with the ball from deep into space and a fairly good engine to cover long distances is what adds that extra flavor to his play. Mainoo might develop that (I hope he does) but he could also not. I'd actually love to see De Jong and Mainoo together with a more defensive midfielder.

His game against PSG highlighted exactly why he's one of my favourite players. The way he kept possession with his feints and turns whilst down to 10 men was lovely to watch.
It'd be disappointing if he missed the Euros. He's always fantastic to watch for Holland especially.

That's a shame. Those injuries are horrific. The last one I remember was Gomes (Everton) getting caught by Son.
Just reading about it and apparently the Madrid fans applauded him off the pitch. That in and of itself tells me how bad it was.
If ETH is still here, as we have seen with Antony, not having a right foot (even literally) isn’t necessarily a deal breaker!

Dutch media reported that he will be out for 5/6 weeks but that making the Euros is still very much possible.
