It feels like there is a referendum on every popular player after every single game where we must decide collectively if he is world class or a bit rubbish.
I used to watch every single Messi game when he was at Barca and I've never seen someone be so consistently brilliant, week in, week out. And yet, if he ever had a bad game, especially in an important match, the brickbats would swiftly come out. So if he couldn't escape the ridiculously harsh judgment of our social media times, young Jude definitely isn't going to. It's a bit silly, but there we go.

This is a bit of a ridiculous opinion when the same Bellingham that you’re trying to argue for came from that same Bundesliga where he had a tougher time standing out than in the Spanish league he joined.

When a player from the German league came to England and shattered all goal scoring records in his first season (Haaland), when the best player in England over the last decade came from Germany (KdB), like so many others from there that have flourished. Only United seems to get players that then underperform, but at this point that seems more a United thing than a Bundesliga thing.

Clearly both Musiala and Jude are among the most exciting talents in the world right now. Arguing Musiala is not because he plays in Germany is so dumb on so many levels.
Well that was clearly not my point. I was simply responding to the other poster who made simplistic statements instead of reading my post.

I said in all of my posts that my opinion is a very subjective one yet people keep on trying to convince me of something

Can’t be arsed about pulling stats or responding to their respective stats because they’re in favor of Bellingham and I clearly stated that I don’t think that the stats is what truly sets them apart but rather the intangible part of the game

Sets them apart? Nonsense. They are at the beginning of their respective careers not in the prime.

Real Madrid won but again he was anonymous. Again, Musiala was much much better despite a strapped thigh. So what is the hype about? What is he great at? Sideways passes?

He was carrying us at the beginning of the season and thanks to him we won the league quite comfortably. Think he's just gassed out by now but don't think he has done much wrong.

Did I see the same game? Musiala was even more anonymous than Bellingham. He didn’t touch the ball for big chunks of the game

Musiala was not better than Jude tonight, let alone 'much much' better.

I think his off the ball work is getting overlooked, largely because of his contributions in an attacking sense. He wasn't great tonight but he does add quite a bit of bite for Madrid. I think longer term, he's probably plays a bit deeper for Madrid and these types of stats will be recognised more when the team isn't as reliant on him for goals.

I don't think some of these are accurate by the way.

To correct some of it.

6th in interceptions (5th for RM)
5th in tackles (3rd for RM)
7th for touches (4th for RM)
6th in completed passes (4th for RM)
3rd in pass percentage (3rd for RM)

Bellingham played reasonably well I thought but was outshone by Vinicius. But it wasn’t a bad performance by any means.

it’s crazy, he’s statisticallly Real Madrid, la liga winners and CL finalists best offensive player and best defensive player (outside of CBs) and he’s “only good at passing sideways”

If his name wasn't Bellingham, no one would even mention that performance. Good young player with many tools in his locker and room for growth, but no need to contort to make his performances more than they are.

the context is midfielders forwards and full backs. Rudiger had the highest pass percentage but err im not how relevant that reallly is. He had 3x touches musiala had for reference

let’s be honest, if that was mainoo we’d be overjoyed.
I understand being cautious over English overhype because media does do it, but his stats have been insane over the season

All I ever hear about this guy is how good of a speaker he is, how mature he is for his age and how he carries himself. Sounds like a good fit for a lawyer or something. The few times I’ve watched him I haven’t seen anything special but obviously I’m missing something.

Rudiger didn't have the highest pass percentage... Nacho 76/78 and Pavlocic 67/70 did...

Not sure how 74 is 3x 44 either.

Is Mainoo being touted as the best player in the world by some? Completely different standards upon which performances and reactions thereto are gauged. Belli has fallen off the second half of the season.

Got to agree. Fair play for getting winners against a Barca team who are in the gutter but otherwise I've seen absolutely nothing special from this lad.

He's massively overrated. Good player, can do everything at a decent level but he's not even close to being one of the best midfielders around. He's been overshadowed in every high quality match-up in the CL this season, anonymous in the midfield battle.

He's scored a few match winners for Real Madrid this season and was on fire at the beginning of season but he's not that special tbh. Well he's English and Real Madrid hype so he'll probably win the ballon d'or if Madrid wins the CL. It's a popularity contest nowadays anyway.

The run vs. Napoli was pretty special. That run of games where he showed preternatural instinct in the box to score winning goals was special. He has tools for sure, I just don't think this second half of the season has been particularly great.

Yeah that's fair. He's got a lot of ability. But any discussion of him even being in the top 3 of Ballon D'or is absolutely ridiculous. Vini is a far far better player than him right now, and he's young, that's fine, but he shouldn't be anywhere near it let alone favorite in the betting now.

He's 20 for crying out loud, there's not many better 20 year old players around

Thought he did well. The level of expectations being placed on a twenty year old are pretty staggering. When you look about and see so many top level, seasoned professionals struggling to make an impact in these knockout games (Mbappe!) it feels ridiculous to question why someone of his age would struggle to stand out. These matches are so tight, so competitive. Vini was really the only player who stood out to me, and he had a serious mismatch going on with Kimmich. Bellingham is still a kid, a kid who has scored world-class goals from 30 yards to win games at the Nou Camp and been brilliant all season.

I don't think the hype machine which had him as best player in the world helped anyone, but anyone suggesting he isn't a special talent is lying to themselves. It feels like when talents are having a staggering season like he's had and the hype is there, people are just waiting to be the first to call them overhyped when they inevitably have a down period because they aren't Messi or Ronaldo. It's a weird trend with football fans that I've never really got. Obviously he wasn't going to boss CL semi-finals and continue to score a goal a game, or he'd be the best player to ever live.

He'll probably start playing midfield for RM next season, so you can judge him as a midfielder for them then. Hard to criticize for being anonymous in a battle he is legit anonymous in as it's not really his role this year.

He's a 20yr old being lauded as arguably the best player in the world and one of the front-runners for the ballon d'or this year. He has to be judged to the highest standards. Is he really the best? I doubt that. He's not even the best in his team, but as i said if Real Madrid win the CL he'll probably get the ballon d'or. It's basically a popularity contest nowadays.

Was ineffective tonight and couldn’t impose himself on the game. I think we’ll see that in the future. beyond some game changing moments of which I concede there have been plenty this year he’s more of a prime deli alli / lampard than someone who truly runs the show from midfield.
Not a criticism, more of a “what type of player is he?” kind of statement.

I'd give him all the slack that being 20 deserves if the Madrid and Brit affiliated media wasn't trying to push him as some actually deserving contender for the Ballon D'or, which he just isn't yet, but probably will be in time.
How isn't he at least a contender for the ballon dor? His form has clearly dipped and he is playing out of position but his stats are still very good and there aren't loads of others having great seasons

I think the standards have put to a ridiculous level, based on what Ronaldo/Messi have done and the outrageous consistency expected of them.

I grew up watching Zidane, a player who won 3 Fifa WPOTY's and 1 Balon d'or. He was one of my favorite players as a young teenager/late child.

In all his greatest seasons, he spent at-least 15 games a season ghosting through games doing, quite literally, feck all. There were so many games for Juve and Madrid where he would just jog around, receive the ball, turn and then just pass it to someone else, for 90 minutes.

Yet he was someone who, out of nothing, could conjure sheer magic, and at his very best, through sheer force of will, could take the game by the scruff of the neck and win the game.

Yet, in some crucial champions league games, he simply did not show up. But that was enough to get him many Balon D'ors or their retrospective equivalent at the time.

You watch him vs Real Madrid in the 98 final, and he quite literally, was a solid 3/10. He was dreadful that match, yet still won Balon D'or that season. Did you guys watch the final vs Borussia Dortmund? He got destroyed Park Ji Sung vs Pirlo style by Paul Lambert. Yes, that Paul Lambert.
I feel nowadays, modern fans will watch those games and say, "Wow, this guy is so overrated, he's meant to be the best playmaker in the world yet he literally does nothing, what's he good at? turning and then passing it sideways?

Frank Lampard came 2nd in balon d'or and made top 5 multiple times. Yet nobody ever said, "Lampard should never have come close." Bellingham has already exceeded Lampard's best ever season in terms of output and is generally just a better all round player. If Lampard can make Balon D'or contention by his output, why can't Bellingham?

We've been spoilt by the sheer audacity of Messi/Ronaldo being able to do it all season, every season, for 10+ seasons. This is not the norm, most players have games during the season where they are either just keeping it simple and ticking things over or just not all there - this is true for literally everyone not named Messi and Ronaldo and even they occasionally had this.

Or Prime Zidane in the Champions League in 2000. Did nothing all group stage, got sent off in the 3rd game. Came back in the final game, did absolutely nothing, decided to nut someone (Materazzi was not the first time) and then got himself a red. His entire CL Campaign summed up.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/champions_league/994847.stm

He went on to the win the World Player of the year that season.
