Ronaldo was on the radar of most of the big clubs. Ferguson's coup was signing him not spotting him.
And transforming him.
If he was on the radar, then I'd presume that most clubs would have gone for him before he had that friendly Vs. Us.
12m was probably a big risk, but if an 18 year old dominates a game Vs an almost Full United side, then you sign him.
Ronaldo would have made it anywhere in my view.
He's that good.
I know you'll take this as some sort of slight towards Ferguson. But it's not. It's a compliment to Ronaldo.

Liverpool were in the market for him but were outbid - and probably outsmarted - by Utd. Same as with Vidic.
But, yeah, I agree £12m is a lot for an 18yo. So is the £28m that you paid for an 18yo Rooney the following season. Quality costs.

I think it's unfair to discount any role Ferguson had in Ronaldo's development. Of course, he would have become a good player wherever he had played, but I think him becoming as good as he is today is, in part, down to Ferguson's management. He looked after him in his first few years, didn't play him in too many games, that helped his development greatly IMO.
I don't really like debating about transfer prices as 2 years makes a huge difference, anyhow Rooney was an established PL regular and International starter... Was no surprise he cost that much...
Arsenal turned down a 6m offer if I'm not mistaken so I don't see how liverpool were actually not interested... Was cheaper than Babel.
Bascially if I was a youngster with flair and played as a wide man, I wouldn't go to Liverpool because in the past 10 years, Liverpool still has been unable to produce a well known winger... and has been the grave of many wingers too... with Babel being the latest victim.

On reflection I was probably marginalising Ferguson's role a little too much. There is no doubting the man's pedigree when bringing through players.
Liverpool actually haven't signed a decent winger to ruin recently.
