Not even the most pessimist would have imagined we've come to this. I'm calling it now, were in serious trouble of relegation. All the signs are here.
Who do you think these managers are now? Outside of Guardiola and Klopp. You haven't really hired a top manager in their prime ala Real Madrid with Mourinho, City/Bayern with Guardiola, or Liverpool with Klopp. Those tend to be the most foolproof appointments.
Beyond that there's taking gambles, but clubs usually move on from those quickly.

Fair. There isn’t really anybody out there though. You haven't really hired a top manager in their prime ala Real Madrid with Mourinho, City/Bayern with Guardiola, or Liverpool with Klopp. Those tend to be the most foolproof appointments.

I know it sounds dramatic, but if we’re being brutally honest, we should seriously worry about relegation unless there’s a drastic turnaround.Assuming you mean next season. No we are not.
Just looked it up and found there were six teams who have gone down with 39 points or more
Boro 96/97 39
Sunderland 96/97 40
Bolton 97/98 40
West Ham 02/03 42
Blackpool 10/11 39
Birmingham 10/11 39
You are probably right but that's still frightening statI feel if pushed by an actual relegation threat this season we would have picked up a few more points. We have the ability to try a lot harder, as we can see in the Europa, so if something was on the line I'd expect to win a few more. That said I guess we could still get relegated next season if we carry over the same form, Amorim gets sacked, and the players write off the season again but can't pick it up enough when it becomes clear we're in danger.

At what number will there be a consensus that this is so unacceptable it's hard to put into words?
West Ham hadn't a win in 8 and they absolutely cruised by us.
If I’m Ineos, Amorim goes with or without the Europa cup. We’ve seen enough. Yes the players are rubbish but decent managers know how to adapt. Amorim as much as I love the guy, seems to be a one-trick pony and even that “trick” isn’t working at United.
The thing that makes me lose hope is that we’ve tried everything:
*Moyes - Premier League proven, managed to keep Everton at a respectable level for 11 years. Downside: obviously not good enough, mid-table quality at best.
*van Gaal - had success with Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and the Netherlands national team, as well as guiding AZ to their first ever (I’m pretty sure) Eredivisie title. Downside - was past his best, he was 62 when we hired him.
*Mourinho - serial winner. Won the Champions League with Porto. Went to Chelsea, won two Premier Leagues, an FA Cup, and a League Cup. Won the treble with Inter, and La Liga with Real Madrid. Went back to Chelsea, and won the league again. Downside: was past his best, as the wheels fell completely off in the third season of his second spell at Chelsea.
*Solskjær - club legend. Did fantastic as caretaker. Downside - was absolutely horrendous after we appointed him permanently, which lasted for eight months until we signed Bruno. Won feck all during his time as manager, although this was after we appointed him. Did well as manager of Molde, but the Norwegian league is way weaker than the PL.
*Rangnick - very respected. Father of gegenpressing. Downside - hadn’t managed for over a decade.
*ten Hag - did very well with Ajax. Managed to make them the best team in the Netherlands again. Downside - as our manager, played an absolutely ridiculous system and signed some absolutely honking players.
*Amorim - probably the best young coach in Europe. Our first manager to not be appointed by the Glazers since Sir Alex himself. Only turned 40 in January. Managed to guide Sporting CP to their first title since 2002.
I’ve not counted Giggs, Carrick, or Van Nistelrooy, as their respective spells as caretaker were too short to be counted.
Like, the thing is, I’m completely fecking lost. I thought that both EtH and Amorim would guide us out of the dark ages, but we’re even more entrenched in them than we were three years ago. And I can’t see for the life of me who can carry us out of it, if we do sack Amorim. Maybe Inzaghi, but that’s it. Nobody else seems like they can turn it around and get us back to where we, and the club, want to be - title challengers and winners.
I mean yeah, some of our players are decent. But we have the worst goalkeeper and starting striker in the league. And that’s a big part of why we’re pants. If we got a better striker, we’d shoot up the league. None of our attacking players, except Amad and Bruno, could score in a brothel.
Swap Leeds and Southampton around this term and we're probably needing a win to stay up on the final day.Oh yeah absolutely. I'm not one of those that thinks we're not bad enough to be relegated either. Wouldn't take much of a further drop in performances from us to be in serious trouble next season. Many assume we'll improve and I really hope we do but I worry that we're in the cursed timeline sometimes.
And that would be fair with the current squadWe're too high and proud. Looking back Jose and LVG weren't so bad. We just expect miracles and keep on chasing the "young modern attacking manager mantra"
If Amorim even gets 2nd he'll be lauded as god.
With how many are convinced we have the 16th best squad in the league, there'll be demands for a statue if we finish top-5.And that would be fair with the current squad

Not sure there is one. An argument could be made for Inzaghi if Inter win the CL. But I wouldn't just go hire him for that.Who do you think these managers are now? Outside of Guardiola and Klopp.
Yup. It’s been completely aimless. That’s why whomever we appoint next should play a style that’s not that different from our current style.Where is the consistency in direction when each manager was hired? That is the biggest issue. We get led by a manager on transfers which wasted too much money, after it doesn’t work we scrap the manager’s idea and go with the next. This is why we are failing. I hoped Ashworth would change this but within 6 months he’s sacked and we let a non-footballing board member make football decisions. His master plan was to bring in a coach with a system that doesn’t suit the squad, mid season, with no transfer budget to buy a couple of decent wingbacks. It’s always poor planning at board level.
Moyes - Defensive coach that sacked our existing coaching staff. He was never good enough, called it before he was even hired. Why has Sir Alex chosen our next manager? Matt Busby did the same thing and that was a disaster as well.
Van Gaal - Possession coach. Past his best by 10 years. Reverted our style to something completely different and was allowed to sell too many players to build a very small squad.
Mourinho - Defensive coach that had just got sack from Chelsea after his worst league season. Spent an absolute fortune. He wasn’t allowed to spend the money in his 3rd summer after getting 2nd in the league. Only Fred and Dalot were sign which didn’t improve the team at all. Since managing us he’s proved to not be good enough.
Ole - Counterattacking coach with a track record of managing Cardiff who were relegated. Was meant to an interim coach who had a good initial run of wins. Was hired over an emotional reaction to beating PSG, we should have never won the game anyway because it was never a penalty. Probably our best football post Fergie but he wouldn’t get a job at any other big club in the world. Allowed to spend a fortune on average Premier League player (Wan Bissaka, Maguire).
Rangnick - was meant to be an interim that assessed the squad and then started building the team as a Director. Ten Hag doesn’t want him involved so he’s sacked before taking the job he was meant to be employed for. Why is Ten Hag dictating who manages above him? Once again we give full automony to the manager on transfer strategy.
Ten Hag - possession based coach. To be honest on paper this looked like the most logical appointment. Prior success at his old club with a style of play. The biggest issue was allowing him to sign who he wanted. Guess what he bought players his agent managed at inflated transfers fee. 100% Ten Hag profited from those transfer failings of ours.
Amorim - changes formation to 3-4-3 whilst we don’t have the squad to play that system. I think he’s a good manager that has come to the club at the wrong time.
If we had an actual Director of Football managing transfers, managerial appointments and direction of style we wouldn’t have wasted so much money on both managers and players. This is down to the Glazers, Woodward, Murtough, Arnold, Ratcliffe and Berreda. One of the biggest clubs in the world that doesn’t have a DOF position. Too many egos at board level that want to make footballing decisions.
Who do you think these managers are now? Outside of Guardiola and Klopp.
Assuming you mean next season. No we are not.
Yep, there seems to be this automatic thought process and notion that the window will go well and Amorim will be then able to successfully implement his system.I think that we need to consider the possibility that we actually could be in a serious relegation fight next season actually.
We had a points total that would get plenty of teams relegated in a season with slightly better teams around the bottom.
We relied on Bruno as our only top class player to keep us afloat this season while the rest of the squad more or less showed that they're nowhere near the quality needed, with plenty of them showing that they would struggle in the Championship.
So let's imagine a scenario where we could be fighting to stay in the PL next season... Well, one lengthy injury to Bruno this season and we're looking at being beaten home and away by Wrexham in the league next year in the league (which would at least mean that we're in the TV show I guess), and there's already rumblings of him being subject to a big from Saudi.
Let's imagine that we lose the EL final (probably the most likely outcome) and therefore have very, very little money to spend this summer. Let's also imagine that nobody wants to pay £40m and £300k per week for a half decent winger in Rashford, and that nobody has much interest in Sancho on huge wages having seen Chelsea pay to get rid, and that cubs are trying to get a bargain for Antony. That means that we're going to struggle to make much money too.
So let's say that we only have the money for 1-2 signings to bolster a piss poor squad that probably should have been fighting against relegation this season. Let's imagine for a second that this club doesn't have the greatest history with signings... And that those two players don't suddenly buck this trend and instead of being the ones who turn things around, they are just the next Hojlund and Sancho, or Zirkzee, or Antony etc., which lets face it, seems far more likely.
Then imagine that a Saudi club comes in for Bruno when United are thinking they've signed a couple of studs. Logically most clubs would want to cash in on an older player who's likely to decline in the next year or two if a big bid comes in. Our club have proven that they're not exactly full of executive genius (I recently heard someone at United saying that we don't bother with looking at analytics at all for example) - so do we really think they wouldn't think it was a great idea to get £100m for an ageing Bruno, not realising that he's our only decent player?
I can very easily imagine a scenario (or three) where we completely mess up our summer window and end up selling Bruno late on in the window to leave us facing a very real relegation scrap that our lightweight, weak mentality squad can't handle.
EtH and Jose, yes. Ole never got us over the line in a final. It's so sad that I would be more confident for Wednesday with this squad if Jose, Ole or even ETH were in charge for that one game. Not even trying 4 at the back just a few times already has hurt our chances.
Great post, agreed completely except for one minor nitpick - Ralf was never going to be a director, just an external consultant. Still, ETH should've had no power to sack him.Where is the consistency in direction when each manager was hired? That is the biggest issue. The thing is, if Ineos are honest then it's themselves who need to be replaced. Instead of bleating on about "best in class". Utter idiots. If I’m Ineos, Amorim goes with or without the Europa cup. True although any managerial appointment will ultimately be a gamble whether it’s INEOS or someone else. When the odds aren’t looking great, it’s time for a change. The thing is, if Ineos are honest then it's themselves who need to be replaced. Instead of bleating on about "best in class". Utter idiots.
Amorim has been awful though, regardless.
Despite everything we'll be nowhere near this tragic next season, mark my words (we have a few decent players after all), but finishing top six is a pipe dream. Mid-table is where we belong and I think we'll be languishing there or thereabouts for the foreseeable future.Although I don’t think we will get top 6, football is funny. I wouldn’t rule it out. A good summer and a good start to the season and you never know.
In terms of talent, we cannot be 16th. We have massively underperformed.
And if you look around the forum, some fans are saying that this manager isn't that bad and that we need to back him.2 in 20 now. Our win percentage has nearly doubled from 5.3% to 10% in this category.

I'm sure some people think he's a great manager.
I think the standard now is, "don't get us relegated....as long he doesn't get us relegated, we'll back him".
How can standards have fallen this low?
It's 3 wins in 21.2 in 20 now. Our win percentage has nearly doubled from 5.3% to 10% in this category.
