The best players should not only have skill, but be a good role model. That is what football is about.
Zidane is probably as good as a role model you can find in football. So Maradona obviously not a good player for you then ? :houllier::houllier:

Great player, but he just wasn't on that level. Make this list on any board apart from a United one, and virtually no-one will include him.
the thread title wants the list of best players the replier ever 'seen'. I would imagine the players ought to at least have captured the replier imagination as well. Of course the likes of theirry henry, bergkamp, adams and ian wright will be top-10 in an arse forum if this same question is asked there. But still, i do know many rival fans admire cantona to some extent.

Roberto Baggio
Batistuta
CRonaldo
Henry
Berkamp
(and many many more)

But Zidane and Ronaldo are the two best of the lot

Twice a season if you were lucky, he would score an incredible goal to rival any player in the world ever…..the other thirty-odd games he played, he just strolled around looking ugly and a bit fat.
His inconsistency and lack of inspiration no doubt contributed to the fact that despite his talent, he only played a handful of matches for England and never left Southampton, which was never simply down to his loyalty, trust me…..

Twice a season? Are you kidding me? He scored over 200 goals for Southampton, the club which he loved and stayed loyal to dispute turning down offers from the likes of Chelsea and Spurs.

He only made a handful of England appearances because of the narrow mindedness of england managers, obsessed with work rate as opposed to skill, sure lets take Darren Anderton and Rob Lee to the World Cup instead of Le Tiss.

Fair enough.

Loads of players who could go into the last 5 spots, but the top 5 are pretty definite for me. You might argue that Messi and Cristiano haven't shown consistent levels over a long career, but they're still two of the best footballers I have ever watched.

Welcome to Manchester reception committee
Based on my reactions to them rather than any claim for objective reality and in no particular order and without prolonged brooding or rationalisation and with due awareness that in the 80s I missed most of what was happening outside English football...

Best
Maradona
Cruyff
Ronaldo MkI

This thread is great, I'm such a Robbo fan I find it unbelievable that anyone would leave him out of their 11. I am sure you guys feel the same about your particular favourites.

I wasn't really around to see him properly in his prime, and there's not alot of stuff out there about him, like George Best and Maradonna

Kenny Dalglish is a few years before my time but I find it strange that only one or two of you blokes who can remember the 80s have seen fit to mention the greatest player ever to represent the club that's won the most.

;) Not the greatest of all time of course, but that players were all great and did a great job for Austria (1978; Austria 3:2 Germany)

Didn'T see it live of course (I'm too young), but watched it several timer later.
Do Austrians and Germans have a rivalry similar to the one the Germans have with the Dutch?

I've wondered about that.

feck me I don't think I could chose a top 10 in any sort of list. I'll give it a go but i could happily chop and change this list all day long:

Ronaldo
Zidane
Ronaldinho
Rivaldo
Van Basten
Batistuta
Keane
Henry
Bergkamp
Giggs

But then there are players like Figo, Luis Enrqiue, Zola, Gascoine, Romario, Stoichkov, Baggio, Le Tissier, Cantona, Zanetti, Nedved, Matthaus, Baresi, Maldini, Del Piero, Guillit, Raul, Messi, Ronaldo, Kaka...

Despite growing up when the likes of Maradona, Platini, Cruyff et al were retiring, I have still been lucky enough to see some truly great players.

Fat Ronaldo was the best striker of his generation.

At his best he was brilliant.
Incorrect. In fact he`s not even the best Brazilian who played up front with a name beginning with the letter R.

Non United list, and in no order

Maradona
Van Basten
Javier Zannetti (quite simply the most underrated player of the last 10 years, brilliant player)
Gheorge Hagi
Dennis Bergkamp
Roberto Baggio
Paolo Maldini
Zidane
Gianfranco Zola
Zvonimir Boban (sweetest left foot I've ever seen - in a non-gay way!)

Who is it. Romario? I dont have flash installed at work so cant view an embedded youtube video.
Yeah mate it was a video of Romario.

Romario was an excellent striker, up there with the very best. But Ronaldo De Lima was one of a kind - The Phenomenon.
